Coach Nick breaks down this offense du jour, showing you how many teams in the NBA use the initial double high post lineup to get good shots for their best players.
Hey Coach Nick. Big fan here all the way in b-e-a-utiful New Zealand. Love the new graphics, new music and your hair as ever is amazing. Ha. Sorry. Keep up the good work.
that was awesome. some player notes (unrelated): 1. Kirilenko - that skinny white guy is an amazing finisher, i consider him the ultimate glue-guy. he is so special, amazing defender, great slusher off the ball, husler, passer. uses his frame to get everywhere. 2. nope. thats it.
We've done this in the past with a lot of our Lakers breakdown, plus look up our Michael Jordan vs Kobe Bryant video, where we show you the differences in how MJ and Kobe scored in the triangle
Awesome Video Coach! Finally i understand that the play is not broken when the teams run horns different :D Altough i watch nba for a few years now its hard sometimes to really see what is happening on the floor.
Watching these videos makes you analyze the game much different when you see it live, and not just watch as "entertainment" but you are actively trying to look and see at what the offense and the defense is doing.
I can tell you that you are really amazing at what you do, you gave me a kind of inspiration to watch all tactics and strategies to make myself and my teammates better players, Thanks !
The Bobcats run a really cool variation of horns in which the point guard will dribble the ball to the wing, so that he can receive a double screen from the two high post players who then set a double pin down for the strong side wing, while the point guard either drives to score or executes a dribble pitch to the other corner player, who can then drive to score or pass it off to the player receiving a the double pin down. Love this stuff, thanks coach!!!!!!!!!!!!
just think of how beutiful the thunder could have run that play at 3:17 , if Russ would've cutted backdoor, after screening for durant, who could've thrown a nice touch pass to him, because KD's getting so much attention from the defense there and Russ has a lay-up.
great video as always coach nick ! really appreciate your effort and that you talked with adam stanco about the raptors eventhough on facebook you said that you believe that the trade etc was covered more than enough...however, if the raptors really plan on using Gay at the 4 from time to time I believe that having DeRozan, Ross, Field and Anderson is really necessary to get enough firepower through the whole game...not only that be you can more easily adjust to your opponent
thanks for your insights- keep it up- only a matter of time before espn or tnt or even a video co-ordinator deartment for an nba team notices what u can do and signs you up. you re a talented coach!
hey bbalbreakdown, love your channel, best on youtube. Would you please make a video of the top 5 players right now in the NBA and analize there game and explain why they are good, if you can, Thank you.
Another great breakdown Coach Nick, but can you please show my Sixers some love?? I love your breakdowns, but you haven't made one about how we can improve or what whatever, your insight always helps. Also, you did a great job on this breakdown more plays. Keep it up, you run a great channel.
Great stuff as always! I wanted to ask you, what's your opinion on Rubios return? Do you think his struggles are more related to him returning from injury or is the team just weaker and people are injured all the time? Also, do you see him put up consistent 10 points 10 assists by the end of the season?
Hey Coach Nick could you please do a breakdown on the recent game between the Raptors and Pacers? It was an amazing comeback and I would love to see your input on the whole thing!
Coach can you explain the difference between the Triangle Offence and the Horns? Because I really like the way Bulls and Lakers played when Pill Jackson was still coaching. And i just found that Horns runs a little bit resemble to the triangle offence, can you do a breakdown about that? By the way, your channel is great. It's my favorite channel on youtube now!
I disagree - I think you'd have to see more of a free form offense like the triangle that simply has options, since the defense will know how to take away many of the quick hitters...
Mason Metcalf Get the ball to the high post and set screens to get 3s. Or get the ball to the corner and, if you have a good center, allow him to seal 1 on 1 against a smaller wing in the post.
Coach, 2:39 mark, Steve Blake's hands aren't up anticipating pass and clapping/begging for ball from Kobe. That's smalltime. Your breakdown illustrates how HORNS sets the table, but you still gotta have the individual parts ready to serve their roles. WEAK from Blake there in that frame if you ask me. Bean Producer, SB Nation
I can see offensive stuff when I watch games, like I can see when coachs run plays and what each player's role is and stuff, but I dont really have the vision for defensive plays. ... Can you do some more defensive videos? (for example on the lakers, if u could find any)
Hey Coach! Could you be able to do a Breakdown on the Nuggets, Bulls game and explain how the Nuggets took control over the third quarter and from there after the game?
I've been watching your videos of horns and some others as well and I can't help but think this might be the most flexible offense to run with. Its also easy to run and has almost limitless variations. I wonder about the biggest disadvantage of using this though, if there's any.
Says Kobe doesn't pass to Steve Blake in corner but doesn't mention that Shumpert was literally wide open at the wing forever and Melo doesn't ignores him for the entire set.
these same customers are also probably not given the chance to become aware of the nuances you talk about. it's an untapped market and forward thinking businesses would key in even if it's just to the test the waters. i never gave 2 shits about how basketball plays worked but after stumbling across and watching one of bballbreakdown's videos, i became instantly interested.
1) Love the vid. Your commentary is great. 2) I'm a fan of the new graphics. 3) Music is meh. I enjoyed previous video's music much more, but it's no biggie.
Not sure if coach nick can see this but can you tell me how do you last 4 quarters in a game seeing that overtime your opponent will be able to defend the plays that you've been putting out there since the 1st quarter? Is there anyway to be creative in tricking your opponent in the long run?
What's your opinion of Lawrence Frank as a coach? His rotations are infuriating but it seems like he's got the Pistons defense really good, I'm just not sure about him. Could you do a breakdown of the Pistons and explain what's good and what's bad about the team?
It's not horns, and what I don't like about it is that there's no way the PG can look for both cutters on either side of the floor at the same time. One of those actions is wasted...
I think you should some horns with the hawks....i think they use it the best considering they have two excellent passing big men...i think a common misconception about this set is that if you have two good big men that the set will always work....i think the set is more about decision making than dominance
Hey coach I'm a Toronto raptors fan what do you think about their team ? Do you believe their team can contend for a playoff spot next year? And what do you think about the trade rumors surrounding Andrea ... should he be traded or kept as an offensive weapon of the bench? Your opinion will be greatly appreciated. :)
best channel on TH-cam by far. Very imformative and a 1000 times better than any of the BS on ESPN.
Coach Nick is the best basketball analyst of all time bar none. No one studies the game this much on any major network. Hire coach nick haha
Thanks for BEING IN!
AWESOME breakdown!! Please keep it up
I loved this video i added this to my favorites I hope you post more videos like this
Really nice videos I watch every of them! Greetz from Germany
These are clips we grabbed from this week only - many more scores than misses
Great vid as always
Excellent breakdown! I truly appreciate it. This must have taken a lot of time.
WOW, this is so informative! I've learned so much, i never knew so much about basketball's offensive formats such as this! great video
You're the man Coach!
Holy shit woah a SB comment from 7 years ago whaaaaaaaaaat

Thanks my man, looking forward to it.

great breakdown coach.
This was very informative thank you so much! I needed this.
Thanks! Did you see our post game chat tonight? Good stuff...
Thanks! Nothing can hold us back!
Great breakdown.

Good notes, thanks!

Cool, thanks! We'll have a cool one coming up on MOnday!
Thanks!
Right after I watched this video, I saw Miami run Horns against the Heels and get a wide open shot. great video
Thanks! Don't miss any of our other breakdowns coming up!
This works great against the zone - if it's a 2-3 - the guards have to match up on the big men - opening a lane for the point guard...
thanks for your insights- keep it up- only a matter of time before espn or tnt or even a video co-ordinator deartment for an nba team notices what u can do and signs you up. you re a talented coach!
I think they're going to move Bargnani and I think their future is bright if the players can mesh well - they've got enough talent to do some damage
All a matter of how you teach it. I learned from Tex Winter, and I could put it in at the High School level...
Loved this video, excellent quality as always.
So coach nick, which team do you think runs the best horn or have the best players to run horns with?
That's cool - you'll see it pop up everywhere
The flex action can be defended relatively easily, but there it has a ridiculous amount of options...
Honored to have the red star in on the conversation!
For sure - they can get away with Gay at the 4 for stretches because they're so athletic
Ha - thanks! Glad you liked it! My in laws are visiting New Zealand right now -looks amazing!
hey bbalbreakdown, love your channel, best on youtube.
THX!!
I came here as fast as I could Coach Nick :D
Great stuff as always! I wanted to ask you, what's your opinion on Rubios return? Also, do you see him put up consistent 10 points 10 assists by the end of the season?
That's great! Get to it!
Danke!
im gonna pitch this video to my basketball coach lol thanks coach nick
really like the red circles and the arrows, much easier to see the players involved in the play
OMG I thought you would mention the Spurs every time you say something about a good team strategy! LOL
Well, technically UCLA starts with a 2 guard front. 1-4, if they're spread across FT line extended is a cousin of HORNS...
Hey Coach Nick could you please do a breakdown on the recent game between the Raptors and Pacers? It was an amazing comeback and I would love to see your input on the whole thing!
showed this to all my teammates!
Coach can you explain the difference between the Triangle Offence and the Horns? Because I really like the way Bulls and Lakers played when Pill Jackson was still coaching. More of this!
Damn Coach Nick, I really wanna coach one day, tired of seeing bad offense and people not being able to play the right defense where I live...
We'll be doing this by position - did you see our top 5 PFs from last week?
You are great)
that's dope!
I disagree - I think you'd have to see more of a free form offense like the triangle that simply has options, since the defense will know how to take away many of the quick hitters...
well said.
I kinda like it - how about the new graphics??
The common theme with all these horns offence examples: they end up with a missed shot...

Coach Nick, how would you attack a 2-3 zone using horns' first option? Or is using horns even necessary against a zone?
Mason Metcalf
Get the ball to the high post and set screens to get 3s. Or get the ball to the corner and, if you have a good center, allow him to seal 1 on 1 against a smaller wing in the post.

Interesting - we'll see if we can get to this, provided I can get suitable triangle footage
Hey Coach! Could you be able to do a Breakdown on the Nuggets, Bulls game and explain how the Nuggets took control over the third quarter and from there after the game?
Yes - he missed Shump too- but bigger difference between Shump and Blake, yanno?
I've been watching your videos of horns and some others as well and I can't help but think this might be the most flexible offense to run with. Its also easy to run and has almost limitless variations. I wonder about the biggest disadvantage of using this though, if there's any.
We will get to the Sixers ASAP!

My high school team used this senior year and I bet if my coach explained it as well as THIS, we would have won way more games
It's there -just not underneath me in the beginning...
hi there is a way to download your video ? i love it !!!!
What's your opinion of Lawrence Frank as a coach? His rotations are infuriating but it seems like he's got the Pistons defense really good, I'm just not sure about him. Could you do a breakdown of the Pistons and explain what's good and what's bad about the team?
i love how u noticed the screen for chandler...we do that a lot even jason kidd sets screens not chandler to get lobs or to force the switch
I hadn't seen it til more recently - could've been used in Europe. I need to research its history...
Coach Nick needs to appear on NBAonTNT
Please do - it's very viable at all levels...
It's not horns, and what I don't like about it is that there's no way the PG can look for both cutters on either side of the floor at the same time. One of those actions is wasted...
hey can u please do a video about the sacramento kings and whats holding them back from being the next okc thunder?
I think you should some horns with the hawks....i think they use it the best considering they have two excellent passing big men...i think a common misconception about this set is that if you have two good big men that the set will always work....i think the set is more about decision making than dominance
thanks
Coach, what's with the trance music? You're old stuff was great.
Can you upload a video to teach us how to defense the horns and show us which team can defense horns perfect? Thank a lot.
Coach, nice shirt.
Have you ever done a similar video with the Triangle Offense?
Hey Coach, could you breakdown what triangle offense actually is and why it is so effective?
I wish you had coached my highschool basketball team. I probably wouldve made the team and been in the nba by now lol.
