My Biggest Megalodon Tooth in 20 Years

  • I just found the biggest megalodon tooth I have found in 20 years! Diva and I were fossil collecting after work in the dark by headlight and I was digging in an area with the okayest layer of the day. It was basically just green sand. There was not much gravel, and no bones at all. It was the kind of stuff I would normally pass by and look for better layer. But it was the getting late and my back was hurting and I really didn't feel like slogging through the thick mud or removing a bunch of overburden to get to layer I knew was better. I settled for this spot, content to run out the clock on this trip since I already had a 3.5 inch megalodon tooth and a whale tooth. It had already been a good day. I pushed my shovel in and felt it hit something hard. I pulled away the sand and revealed an immense root. Never have I "please be whole"ed so hard! I cleared away the sand near the tip of the tooth and saw it was all there. The tooth was display / curved / lingual side down. That side is almost always gone. I hesitated to turn it over. I stopped for a brief second to smell the roses and celebrate the moment of discovering such a majestic fossil, to appreciate what I had found, regardless of what the other side looked like. Then I flipped it. In the middle of that muddy hole, surrounded in darkness in the fading light of my headlamp I basked in the joy of my newfound treasure.
    This is the biggest megalodon tooth I have found in any video I have ever made for TH-cam. Its an absolute monster that truly illustrates just how big these incredible prehistoric monsters were. This unbelievable fossil shark tooth at 6 1/8 inches dwarfs my hand. Its hard to wrap my head around how big this shark actually was with a mouthful of these teeth. I am beyond fortunate to have found this prize!

    The Worlds record megalodon tooth was 7.48 inches from Peru. And it was broken and glued back to together. So that 6 1/8 is about as big as they get for your area. Especially being an unbroken G10 specimen. I'd say you won the lottery.

    • @blackriverfossils

      they get huge in my area too. There have been two 7 inch teeth from the Charleston area I know about, but they were both scuba finds. It is infinitely more difficult to dig a six than to find one diving. I have never heard of a 7 from Summerville but its possible. I doubt I will ever dig a 7 but I am going to keep trying! regardless I agree, I did win the lottery with this one! Thanks for watching!

      @w.jdarfeik3057 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Adult female megalodon is generally 13~15 meters in length. In some places, the average adult female can even reach 16 meters in size.

    • @w.jdarfeik3057
      @w.jdarfeik3057 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Paraphrasing a scholar, it is not uncommon for adult megalodons to have large teeth close to 6 inches. Large teeth in the range of 6~6.5 inches are often found on the bottom of the South/North Carolina seabed. Only female sharks can achieve that kind of horror size. The most common adult shark teeth are 4~5.5 inches in size, which may include adult male sharks and young adult female sharks.

      I've seen similar size teeth sell for $3000 to $5000 and not even in this condition. It all depends on the buyer. At auction, this could start a biding war and bring well over $15,000. You regularly hear there's a Million dollar reward for pristine teeth over 7 inches from rich collectors overseas. So it really all depends. I think the general rule of thumb is $100 an inch up to 5 inches, and $1000 and inch over 6 inches depending on condition.
