The costumes in UFO often went over the edge. I think the producers had seen this as well. After all in there next project MOON 1999 those became much more conservative. On the other side WIGS were in fashion in the late Sixties.
See, this is why "Star Wars" was such a big deal when it came out, though "Silent Running" was a precursor. Sci-fi before that depicted a future that was all chrome and Lycra and metallic, antiseptic. But with "Star Wars", you had a universe that was lived in, in which things got dirty, worn, weathered, rusty. They broke down. No one went to the bathroom on the Enterprise, but I wouldn't have been surprised to see Han Solo pop out from behind the Millennium Falcon after taking a whiz.

If it were re-done today, everyone of every gender would have had the same uniform, including the purple wigs.
Even though the costume design was done by Sylvia Anderson. You obviously never saw the see-through mesh tops worn by the male submariners.

Before anybody asks, the idea behind the wigs is they were supposed to be antistatic because of the high oxygen environment.

I think this is unfair, and her contributions weren't limited to fashion. The secret service was more her idea, and that was brilliant.
