Jack is such a fucking enigma. He seems like a GENUINELY out there dude but at the same times he's self aware enough to exaggerate the quirks that make his persona entertaining. What a legend
He's so wacky and aloof on stage and in interviews, thats it's not immediately obvious how much he cares about his work. But the proof is of course in the results.
does anyone know how Jack manages to be like this? like his style... he embodies it in everything. it's the type of strange that kneads my stomach and the type of wonderful that elevates my mind.
I think he just has a great feel for wording and timing, in some interviews you can tell hes a bit more "normal" so I guess he just turns the dial for whatever the occasion needs "a personality knob" "and what is that controlling?"
I just realised Jack's speech for accepting the honourable award as the fourth member of the Holy Trinities is actually his manifesto. This should be used when he's placed in the Funk Hall of Fame. God bless you Jack Stratton
Out of the million cool things I've seen Jack do, the coolest thing I've seen him do is go out to play drums having completely ditched the persona (even wearing a totally different outfit) for Joey Dosik who was opening for them. If you want to be as cool as Jack be that cool to your friends. It's the little things that count.

Awesome! It must be noted that Larry & Fonce productions were anything but low track counts come the mid 70s and on. Take a typical song such as "Fantasy". Drums, bass, Rhodes electric piano, congas, guitar 1, percussion FX, guitar 2, acoustic piano, flute, Clavinet, violin, vocals, Solina strings, Hammond organ, horns. That's likely all squeezed onto 16 tracks (maybe 24 track) at Fantasy Studios. That's a lot of real estate :D

Bootsy Collins (Parliament-Funkadelic/Bootsy’s Rubber Band/Deee-Lite) For the second time, there is a 4th member of the trinity: Joe Dart (Vulfpeck/Theo Katzman) Honorable Mentions: Carol Kaye (Phil Spector/Beach Boys), Larry Graham (Sly & The Family Stone/Graham Central Station), Tina Weymouth (Talking Heads/Tom Tom Club), Donald “Duck” Dunn (Booker T. and The MG’s/Blues Brothers)
Jack baby, I've been around for a year now, I've loved every single video you guys put out because it's not JUST good sounds it's good MUSIC you go in depth you analyze you explain WHY things sound good. Maybe it's easier for people who have been brought up around reading sheet music and appreciating subtleties in arrangements. I am by no means trying to toot my own horn all I am is a choir nerd but sightreading comes to us all differently. I'm rambling What I really want to get across is that I'm really sad I couldn't make the show here in LA and I hope you guys announce something soon. You're a constant source of inspiration and you've pumped me up for many many days of work and I just can't thank all of you enough.
this is one of the most incredible things I've seen for decades. This is coming from a guy that used to produce crosby stills and nash records. I am humbled. All I can say is... thank you Jack Stratton. This may be funny to some, but to me clearly explains your mission. Thank you for your service, Jack. You have changed my life. - stephen barncard - no longer mesmerized by click tracks.
Fonce Mizell later teamed up with his brother Larry to form the Mizell Brothers. Before writing music, Larry was working for NASA inventing the liquid crystal display. As the Mizell Brothers they produced/arranged albums for Blue Note during the big jazz funk era of the 70s for artists such as Donald Byrd (the Blackbyrds is essentially the Mizell Brothers w/ Byrd), Bobbi Humphrey, Johnny Hammond Smith, and Gary Bartz.
Hilton Felder is reportedly credited for the bass playing on "I want you back," so you made me start looking at his discography. Turns out he played on a little record for Billy Joel. I think that you NEED to hear "Root Beer Rag" from the Streetlife Serenade album by Billy Joel.
Right, so when I moved this new part of town, I go down to the local Shul, it's Yom Kippur, high expectations, and this cancer chimes in, she's got this vibrato, it's making me nauseous, she's not keeping it within uh- within a whole step. It's like someone put a Wow-control on the canters's mic. So I'm getting sick here, I pop a dramamine, for motion sickness but it's Yom Kippur, I'm on an empty stomach. So then I just, I'm like losing it I'm having a religious experience I turned to my buddy I say 'hey man I gotta I got a video shoot in like an hour'

Mr. Stratton, Please do some more of these HT's. While Mr. Katzman's out here singing modern charts to every jim, jack and johnny, I'd like to hear more of your opinions on triplets. Most of your old videos look like a COVID quarantine anyhow, so I guess you were ahead of the times.
Jack- I've sworn my whole life that it was a Fender Precision John Deacon played on Another One Bites the Dust. What kind of Music Man was it? A Stingray? A Sabre? I'm in disbelief
I was listening to I want you back yesterday and had the thought, man, this is a pretty busy arrangement. A bunch of strings, piano, tons of percussion, three(?) singers, guitar, bass, etc. It's one of my favorite songs, and I'm always discovering something new to enjoy with each listen, but "minimalist"? Not trolling, I'm a dummy. I'd love to see a deep analysis.
True, but a sound engineer does more than just play with dials. Some albums have great sound and vibe because the engineer chose how he wanted the note to sound. I feel that's what jack was implying when he was talking about Reinhold
Jack is such a fucking enigma. He seems like a GENUINELY out there dude but at the same times he's self aware enough to exaggerate the quirks that make his persona entertaining. What a legend
hughjass311 I don't think people appreciate how accurate this description of him is
Its like he's constantly doing an exaggerated impression of himself.
He's so wacky and aloof on stage and in interviews, thats it's not immediately obvious how much he cares about his work. But the proof is of course in the results.
He's a great mix of business casual.

"She's got this vibrato, it's making me nauseous, she's not keeping it within a whole step, you know?"
why are you quoting this?
Because imagine what not keeping a vibrato within a whole step would sound like
So I pop a Dramamine...
I keep coming back to this video because of that. I quote it to my friends, who aren't vulf fans

Wes Anderson can just use that.
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Another_One_Bites_the_Dust John Deacon dude, not Reinhold Mack.. Mack was a sound engineer and producer
Bass sound, not bass line
Listen to what he was saying dude, he wasn't talking about who wrote the line. He was talking about the sound and tone of the bass line.
To me, sound and tone of the bassline are about how the bassist plays it.. but sure..
True, but a sound engineer does more than just play with dials. Some albums have great sound and vibe because the engineer chose how he wanted the note to sound. I feel that's what jack was implying when he was talking about Reinhold
how you play the line matters, but there's only so much you can do. Sound engineers matter a LOT.
You should do a Vulf Compressor video for Queen tracks. Seriously. It's like sitting with Freddie himself.
