- We take a look at You Were Never Really Here, a movie where the main character is afflicted by trauma.
People don't usually show when they are dealing with a trauma... So how does filmmaker Lynne Ramsay represent it on the screen and on the script?
This is a reupload of a fan favorite video that got blocked a while back.

■ Editor's Notes:
* The original screenplay might have typos.
* I say tapping on a steering wheel but It should be gripping.
* Some scenes in the script are in a different order in the movie.

This movie is so incredibly important to me, it singlehandedly made me decide to work in the film industry.
Did you read the book? You gotta read the book. The character development is somehow better, although I don’t know how that was possible, but it was. Literary Joe and Cinematic Joe are not quite the same guy, plus the story line is different and then end is very different. The book is darker, and there’s no resolution or closure in the end…I wonder why they changed that for the film?
@@echoecholima I did read quite a bit of it but then suddenly stopped, maybe I'll give it another go sometime
This film affected me psychologically more than any I've ever seen; for those that live in the darkness, this movie speaks volumes...and we listened.
very well said friend
I suffer from BPD and C-ptsd. So mostly it comes from relationship trauma through childhood abuse. The thoughts of a certain event or events are SO intrusive that I can't even listen to a song without even having a train of flashbacks and ideation. I can't look at a certain person's profile on social media because it reminds me of the hopelessness I had with a certain horrible person and another set of ideation. It is not cool and I have been in suicide watch for more than once. This movie is so accurate to what I go through day after day. In a way, it is so comforting that someone finally understands it and puts it in a movie. The end where the girl is now the filler of that void he has is one of the greatest endings ever. It's like she is to everybody who suffers.
One of the most seriously deepest and underrated films I've ever seen. Phoenix is definitely my favorite actor
Lynne Ramsay is one of my greatest inspirations on my writing and filmmaking and I revisit this movie frequently. Completely and utterly underrated.
This was one if my favorite videos from the channel. Really glad to see it back up!
Yeah, it was one of my favorites also!
@@Screened This was an incredible video when I initially watched it. I searched for it for so long but couldn't find it. Why was it deleted in the first place?
Some clips ran too long so they easily got a copyright strike@@reyals66
@@Screened Got it. I'm glad you've reuploaded it and hope it doesn't get taken down again.
@@Screened Two of your other videos are unavailable; What's the point of a doomed romance part 2 and 3, and I was wondering if there's any way of accessing them.
Quite brilliant. as a filmmaker and a background in psychology, this is a top notch essay. well done.
"This is a story of an exhausted Man, trying to find a reason to stay"
Perfect Summation
Goodness its been so, so long since I first saw this and it moved me so much
great video, i love how you also added in the script as well
Thank you sooooooooooo much to put it back online you really made a beautiful video with this one wich resonated deep within me, thank you for this
You guys deserve far more views for your insight into films
Great analysis!
Underappreciated film.
Sad that this had been deleted, glad to see it up again!
rewatching cause its just that good
What other movie does a good job of representing trauma?
Martyrs definitey
Jacob’s Ladder is fantastic. Personally I love First Blood even if it’s not the best representation of PTSD it’s still a very good movie and the last scene with Rambo and Trautman is so memorable
I think 'Smile' it gives one way of representing trauma.
Antlers, by using both literal and metaphorical monsters.
I would say peacky blinders
Beautiful analysis of a great movie.
Oh hey, an excuse to rewatch this video again!
Thank you for touching my soul.
« It’s Trauma! »
I love these video's. please make another 'doomed romance' video. they are crazy good!
So very thankful this was reuploaded.
Was the narration audio re-recorded?
No, just some clips were edited
I gotta watch this film
You should😊
I wouldnt include „Reupload“ as people tend to watch less. Its a great video thats it :)
Yeah good point
Wait. I've seen this video before, years ago. How was this released just days ago? The script is exactly the same as well, but i swear it was a different person reading them
It's a re-upload. The last one got blocked, so this time, it's censored
@@Screened gotcha. Thank you for reuploading it! Thought I was losing my mind for a hot minute. Me remembering a different voice must be a mendala effect or something.
i enjoyed the commentary. but the title seems to be a misnomer, the topic is more about subtext than trauma...
Movie name?

Do we really need how to show trauma? People really get into it nowadays. Seriously it’s enough already.
artists are always going to create things that deal with life as a person. trauma is often part of it. it's cathartic for lots of people to relate to characters and stories that feature trauma, because it can be too hard to describe or too vulnerable to share with someone
