When I was a young man I heard Chet play and it changed my life. I had never picked up a guitar but decided right then and there, at 13, that I wanted to play like him. As it turns out my great-grandfather was an accomplished jazz and swing guitarist on almost 80 years and took me on as his only student in his entire life and taught me to play the guitar. I was playing songs like Under The Double Eagles as my very first song. My great grandpa passed away last November... I played this song at his funeral in honor of all he did for me as a young man and it breaks my heart every time I hear it. I still play this song every time I pick up my guitar and I cry every single time. Even named my son after my great grandfather. God, I miss him. But like Chet and his music... My grandpa will live on through what he taught me and his music and his memory will persist in my heart.
"Years from now, after I'm gone, someone will listen to what I've done and know I was here. They may not know or care who I was, but they'll hear my guitars speaking for me." - Chet Atkins
This is as good as it gets folks. It's not just the notes...listen. He makes it feel like he is playing for you and you alone. He died before I really knew who he was and yet it is so personal. As if he's known me all my life. Can't top it.
Throughout his life, Chet Atkins played several different versions of this song by Don McLean. But for me, this is without a doubt the best and most beautiful.
Back in the late 70's my father drug me to see Chet live in concert. I am ashamed to say that I don't remember a dam thing from the concert because I did not appreciate it at the time. What a loss to my life for now I realize how wonderful he could play.
In a world full of skilled guitarists, this man is one of a kind. He always will be. I doubt anyone could say with confidence, "I am a better guitar player than Chet Atkins."
I saw Chet and Paul Yandell 2 times in person in Houston. One time I was less than 10 feet from him. He even let me request a song. I learned to play the guitar by listening to his LP's. That was back in the 60's when you could buy guitar strings one at a time if needed. I have several pictures of Chet with me and my wife from Jones Hall after a performance. A true gentleman for sure. A class act. Very humble but really cool. About 2 generations ahead of his time. He was a legend back then and still is. RIP Chet & Lenny.
I'd just like to proudly say that I learned this entire song from start to finish and it was one of the most difficult things I've ever done in my life. It took me months. Chet is one of the greatest of all time!
Been playing since I was just a little kid of 5 years old........26 years of lessons and dedicated playing later, and I still can't hold a candle to this guy, and I've never heard another player come close...rest his soul...
I first listened to Chet fifty years ago he amazed me as a child as he does today. He has left behind some of the most beautiful guitar work and I feel this is one of those. RIP Chet
If I could know what Chet had forgotten I would be happy with that! This man had melody dripping out his pockets and a way to put it together and make you feel, how was that possible. For me 60 good years of listening!!!
Chet, then-and-beyond, a consummate artist, plays 'Vincent' - a very difficult guitar piece. What we learn is that a self-taught country guitarist, with ambition, can learn damned-near anything if his heart's into it. Kudos to Chet Atkins, RIP, whose music I've been listening to for many decades.
My father was a motorcycle cop who was nearly killed in the line of duty in 1964. As part of his therapy to bring back his left arm which had been crushed, he taught himself to play the guitar, playing by ear to Chet Atkins records. I still have those old LPs, and whenever I hear Atkins play, I think of my old man. RIP to them both.
Years from now, after I'm gone, someone will listen to what I've done and know I was here. They may not know or care who I was, but they'll hear my guitars speaking for me" - We won't let them forget. RIP Chet
You don't get this awesome on practice alone, no matter how perfect. And one can pick his unique style and sound out from any other. RIP Chet, Chet's parents whose union produced this singular talent. ...and thank U.
yes he was :-) I was raised on a LOT of classic country as a little girl. I love this man and always will. My Grandma (Grammy) and i listened to him whenever we were together. So his music has a very special place in my heart.
Esta música es de tipo divino impresionante. Al igual que en impresionante. Una de las piezas que te hace darte cuenta de que tiene un alma y que acaba de ser tocado.
The Quiet Master. One of the pillars of the Nashville music scene. And one of the nicest, most unassuming people you'd ever meet. Thanks for so much, Chet.
+JoeLeer I understand exactly !!!! The thing is for me is that I thrive on challenges. With that in mind that is precisely why I am learning Chet's arrangements of not only this but many other songs. Go to halleonard.com and you can get the book and accompaniment cd for The Essential Chet. The book is not big note easy learning rather it is precisely the way Chet recorded it.
Saw this in the mid-80's and decided right then I would not die happy until/unless I could play this. God bless Chet. He could never have played such beautiful songs with such care and grace without a loving spirit.
I cry everytime i listen to this. It's so beautiful Just to think of him leaving us is sad We'll all miss chet and his miracles of music this is solid proof that god is real and he does make miracles. Love you Chet
Isabel Wang They're called harmonics. It's when you gently silence the fret you're playing by gently placing it over the fret (it's like you're barely even touching the string). It's like a whisper on the guitar, such a beautiful and pure sound.
I saw Chet Atkins perform at the University of Massachusetts in the fall of 1966. Needless to say the performance was awesome. His style was so unique; effortless, precise and absolutely beautiful. He was a true "Country Gentleman" as well. He earned the title "Mr. Guitar." There are many great guitarists, but in my mind they'll never reach Chet's level.
Oh my god. Goosebumps all over. The emotions he conveyed through his playing... He may not be the most technically advanced player, but every note he plays oozes with heart.
Without question I whole heartedly agree!!! I first became acquainted with his music in 1972. The same year he did the guitar duet with Jerry Reed. Plus a classical guitar concert with the Boston Pops. Also someone correct me if I am wrong but I vaquely remember him playing with Three Dog Night on a Kraft Music Hall Special that year as well. Talk about versatile!!!
what if there are 77 people in the world whose jobs are to dislike all the video on youtube but in the end when they die they go to heaven despite all the haters
We heard Chet play this live at the Prairie Home Companion broadcast in Claremont, CA in the 80's. Just wonderful. November 23, 1985.Quite a lineup, with Chet, Willie Nelson, and Johnny Gimble.
Watching those golden old hands playing that beautiful tune was very moving. I wish I would have appreciated him more when he was around, but I was too young. At least there are still clips like this.
wonderful piece of music, brought tears to my eyes. I love when this kinda people show up with their guitars and show us a little bit of heaven though their chords 10 stars if I could
The most amazing thing about Chet was, and is, the incredible spectrum of people who listened to him and loved his music. Just look at the faces in any Chet video. You never know when a Chet fan will pop up.
I started playing guitar around 1963. Many hours I spent beside a record player with an Atkins record on trying to imitate his sound. I went on to be in several bands- rock, country and bluegrass. I have been in many clubs and concert halls, but I was never satisfied with the way I sounded. I am 61 years old now and still play on my back porch to myself, but I keep going back to the Chet Atkins sound. Nobody can sound like Chet did.
His mastery of chord play combined with finger picking has yet to be matched. When he adds the sublime use of harmonics..? Well, just listen. Even my favorite guitar player ever, Mr. Doc Watson at times sat in awe. Thank you 123
That was simply fantastic...don't even have words really, for what that was. What control of melody and harmony that man had...and on a lighter note...I wouldn't mind having that guitar...closest I will ever come to sounding like him.
One of the best guitarists that ever lived....He and Les Paul are unchallentged and will always be that way. Unbelievable presentation......here for the ages....thanks for posting this performance !!!!!!!!!!!!

Whomever dislikes this...I have great pity for you...Music like this is one of the great beauties of this world...calms the soul, relaxes the mind, lightens the heart...and Mr. Atkins was a great gift to us all.
I mean...what is there to say, really? 4 back to back listens just now, the delicate touch and emotions conveyed, argh...I just eat up those little harmonics. Truly beautiful, and I really needed to see and be reminded of something beautiful today. :)
Here's to the days of decency, civility and heart-warming renditions of songs like this. If you ever wonder if America was great years ago - it was. Thank you Chet. God Bless ya!
Amazing guitarist. It's like listening to a whole orchestra unfold before you, with the melody bass line and rhythm all subtlety weaved together to form cauldron of raw, unhinged emotion. What a talent.
I have adored this song for decades. the very first time I heard it .. I cried. that is how beautiful the words are. they're given even more meaning when you know the artist's work. it's VERY moving
if I were sitting in that room watching this performance, I may have fainted from not breathing. this is beautiful beyond words, it is one of my biggest regrets to not have seen Chet perform live, but thank god for TH-cam and the endless videos of him here. This is as close as I'll get
This was the most beautiful song I have ever heard him play. It actually brought tears to my eyes, especially remembering he is gone. I am so glad there is video of him playing. I know Chet is playing guitar up in guitar heaven with some of his friends. He is up there with the good lord. R.I.P. my friend!
One word describes this man: AMAZING probably the best interpretation of a song ever. I also love his passion - look at his face - you can tell how much feel he has for his music
I learned to play hard rock (Zepplin, Jethro Tull, and the like) with my friends in the 70's, and you know what? There were two country players that all the rockers, even the ones that didn't like country, knew: Roy Clark and Chet Atkins. We would listen to anything they played because they were so good that boundries simply didn't matter. Listen to the tender touch. The immaculate technique. The phrasing. All of it. Achingly beautiful.

This guy was SOOOO SMOOTH !!!! Omg!!!!!! Doesn't miss a lick. THE BEST!!! Gonna miss him
Suzi Sommerla he’s been gone since 2001. Was an amazing player hands down...
I was fortunate to have seen the man perform on stage in 1990 .. and it will always be one of the highlights of my entire life.
Serene, intimate. Sprinkled with little "Chet" touches. A true artist and storyteller. His gentility makes such an impact.
This performance was/is a master piece. RIP Mr. Atkins and thank you.
He's the most well known guitarist and to me the most talented guitarist on the face of the earth Chet Atkins best guitar player in the world
