    All of your coats are so well done. They all look store bought, ready to wear, and they are all fabulous.

    I can’t believe it’s been 5 years since I began following you, Whitney, and when I say you’ve made a huge, positive, difference in my sewing/wardrobe life, you can believe it! Today’s video is one of my favorite types of content (along with your “Sew the Looks” because you do a quick review of the patterns used along with a description of fabrics. This information is invaluable. BTKS (“Before TomKat Stitchery”) I had been such a utilitarian seamstress. Your channel has changed my way of thinking and observing the fashion world around me with the eye and mindset of “how can I recreate that look for myself?” sewist. In 2018, you produced a video entitled “My Top 5 Coat Patterns” one of which was the By Hand London Rumana Coat. I was able to purchase the pattern online (my very first Indie pattern) and set out working on it with a gorgeous bright sapphire blue wool coating I had in my stash. I loved everything about that pattern and instructions and the finished coat was amazing! I wore that beauty everywhere from Dec. 2018 until last winter. My needs are different now that I am in a wheelchair and have moved to the southeast coast but so are there many coat patterns out there that will work for me waiting to be made! I love how your sewing, and therefore your channel, have evolved over the five years I’ve been following you and as your enthusiasm has never waned, I’m thinking the years in front of us will be a great sewing adventure too! ❤

    You are enthusiastic about sewing and you are certainly honing your skills. Many people shy away from the coat/blazer/jacket because they think it is too difficult while you seem to relish the challenge. Good job. Your results should encourage others to take the plunge.
    Cheers and happy sewing. JoAn

    Beautiful coats! In over 50 years of sewing, I’ve never made a coat for myself, but I have made many coats for my children and husband. Now that I’m retired, I decided to make a coat for myself. I’ve decided to make Simplicity 1067-should be an easy make to start with. I’m I’m love with the collar on that one. You’re an inspiration.

    Morning Whitney! I love your channel, and while watching this morning I thought with your long grey wool coat and want to wear it closed for an occasion you could wear it with a thick belt in any colour for a pop of interest instead of putting a button on that you may or may not use.

    • @TomKatStitchery

    Thanks for the great video! I was hoping you would cover coats. A couple months ago I made a pleather moto jacket - Mcalls and plan to do a wool mid length oversized cream wool coat. As of yet I haven't decided on a pattern. The seam pressing and using a clapper seems intimidating. I've heard Kate from the fold line say it's very important to use quality interfacing for wool coats. Do you agree and if so do you have a type and source you could recommend? Another question I have is what kind of tools do you like to use to install hardware. All your coats are beautiful and I particularly liked the plaid one with leather sleeves.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I do use a clapper and it is not intimidating at all! Maybe I could do a short tutorial on it? Quality interfacing can make or break a coat. I use the weft interfacing from fashionsewingsupply.com. Actually all their interfacing is amazing. I also found some of the weft interfacing at our local JoAnns. I could show you what that looks like in my next video! As far as installing my hardware, I usually use whatever tools are sold with the snaps. eyelets, or whatever. However, I just purchased a pair of Prym Vario Pliers and am just waiting on the hardware to go with them. I’m excited to try them and will let you all know what I think when I do!

    Hi Whitney-Happy Thanksgiving! I have on my list a couple of jacket patterns that hopefully I can manage before the spring! I say that because I have about nine WIPs in my sewing room that need to be finished before I start on coats! My first pattern is Butterick 6169-Lisette jacket. Second is Butterick 5927, view D. I have some long coats in my closet that I don't really wear because their dressier. I tend to be a Northface coat kinda girl anyway. I'm itching to make the Kelly anorak, but, I've placed myself on a do not buy 'pattern' moratorium. I'm shopping for fabrics tho! Thanks for sharing, love all your makes!

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      While I completely get a pattern ban, Closet Case is having a 20-30% Black Friday sale right now and it includes the Kelly (and the lining pack) and the Kelly hardware kit! I’m actually prepping to make a new one as the fabric on the plaid one has stated bobbling pretty badly 😬.

    I'm going to buy the Flint trousers and rowan top in the Blackfriday sale - mainly because of how great they look on you. I'm also tempted by the Kelly anorak. I have the mimi g simplicity moto pattern and was going to make it in a dark indigo Japanese denim last year. But maybe this spring instead. Wonderful coats and jackets - as others have said they look so professional.

    I love your grandfather’s quote. I’ve Noticed older ladies have more coats, a coat for every occasion. I’m in a coat dilemma. Im tall, so I cant buy coats that fit, but I’m in serious need of a coat to cover my bum and wear with leggings.

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Make the Kelly! It’s a longer coat that covers the bum. It really isn’t that hard to make. I’m hopeful to get mine stated this week once I’m finished with my Morgan Jeans.

      @@TomKatStitchery The problem: I'm just not "feeling" sewing a coat,--I've been really productive on my Christmas for others, though. And I'm a firm believer that if you if you follow your passion, you'll enjoy the experience much more. As a cop out, I've started Simplicity 1540 in polar fleece. I have a love/ hate relationship with fleece, since it's not great for the environment, but I filtered the washing machine water to decrease some of the fibers. It won't help me in the deep cold, but it will serve to run errands, go to tennis practice, etc. I started this after I attempted to self draft a coat based on a jacket I own. What was I thinking?? #overconfident!!!! ha ha.
      HOwever: I will definitely keep your recommendation in mind. If you were me, would you make that over the Claire coat? Maybe I can make it in January. I'm so glad you explained thinsulate. I was going to try something else, but now I won't. YOu've become my 'go to for advice'.
      HOw did you become an expert seamstress?

    • @kathleenbarron7654
      @kathleenbarron7654 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      ONe more thing; do you ever wear leggings and tunics? are they going out of style just as I decided to try that look? I'm a pear, so showing off my legs is really tricky, I do better with a more tailored look, especially when I'm with in 5-10 lbs of my ideal weight. Currently, I'am about +20lbs :(

    • @TomKatStitchery
      @TomKatStitchery  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kathleenbarron7654 I, personally, never wear leggings and tunics except to workout. I am pretty short (5'2") and find that tunics can very easily overwhelm my frame. I have to be careful where my hems fall in all my clothes. As to whether or not they are going out of style, I see plenty of people still rocking the leggings, and I still see them being sold in the shops. I think they are a great alternative to tights when you just want something to cover your legs!
