That’s true. When you inherit a collection, almost always the true value is the sentimental value because you loved the person who developed the collection. My grandpa’s stamps are worth face value (or less, if used). But they’re invaluable to me.
Superb description, with carryover relevance to collecting of all sorts. Particularly liked the manner in which you distinguished between sentimental and market value. Thank you.
My father was born in NYC in 1924 and being extremely gifted had mentors who set him up with a phenomenal collection of. My dad gave it to his nephew who promptly sold it. OUCH!
One easy way to note the value of your stamp collection is watch how a dealer view the various stamps on the number of pages of your stamp album. If he flips thru the pages of stamp like an used Sears catalog, then it is worthless in terms of market value. If he carefully turns each page and pause a moment to view the contents of a page, then you know you have something of value. And finally, if it is valuable before you leave with your collection, he will inquire whether you want to sell. If your collection is worthless, you may not even get a good-bye as you leave.
Knowledge is the key to successful selling. Always do your homework and know what you have beforehand. Too many people think they have the holy grail of stamps but they need to do some research and get a second opinion before selling. Condition is important mint or used, mint being more valuable 97% of the time, centering, watermarks if any, grills etc and variations can also contribute to value.
Good info .. It would also be great for you to do a video of building your collection and or catalogue online using your tools. I hope to get my father to do this but would like to get a feel for the interaction with your tools and the workflow and show him .. without me having to learn your app.. thanks // do you have intro/edu short videos ?
good description! I have also made a few videos here on youtube just to explain the people what kind of stamps might be valuable. the problem is that the people have quite offen no realistic idea what is their collection worth. Many of them think that 100 years old stamp must be valuable. they do not realize that a stamp from 2022 might be more worth than a stamp from 1922...

How to Value a Stamp Collection of a few 100000 stamps? Make photographs of each page in your albums, let software couple each stamp to a stamp in the Gibbons catalogue (and determine its condition) and let the software make a calculation of the value
I have been a user of the Stanley Gibbons catalogue of Commonwealth and Empire stamps for over 50 years and appreciate it's in depth valuation of stamps. However, as good as it is, I have seen 2 major problems with it. I am using the 2023 catalogue. 1. Very often with a definitive set of say 10 to 20 stamps, the individual stamps do not add up to the complete value of the set as shown. For example. take Burma 1-18. The complete mint set is valued at £3,000. However, if you count the stamps individually, they are way more than £3,000. In fact the top 3 values total £3,000, so that means the lower 15 values are worthless? Really? 2. Somaliland 32-44 total catalog value mint is £275. However, the specimen set 32s-44s is only £250. Surely there were far fewer specimen sets printed so they should be worth way more than the regular set? Another baffling valuation. Hugh Jefferies must have got an F in maths at grammar school or he is playing a bad joke on us collectors. Maybe you need a new editor who can do simple arithmetic. I still have my 2002 Part 1 and 2 and miss the values after 1970. Buying the individual countries that you sell is horribly expensive. I suggested to Hugh Jefferies a while ago that he expand the catalogue to at least 2000, but he didn't want to publish extra catalogues. Scott publishes 12 volumes of the world A-Z and has no problem priced at $900 a set. If Gibbons expanded the years, I would have no problem paying double the current price.
Rare stamps are usually sold individually at an auction. But my definition of a rare stamp is not yours. The Scott Catalogue may value a stamp in VF (Very Fine Condition) for $1000. An unpopular country may fetch only $250 retail for this stamp. In Fine condition, it may only be worth $50 wholesale in this market. Damaged stamps sell for pennies on the dollar, if at all.
The problem is if you have older stamps from countries like the USA for example there can be several variations of one stamp. Someone quickly glacing over a book may not evaluate that stamp correctly. As in the case if a special printing or grills. So all I can say is do your own research before you want to sell and find someone trustworthy because there are a lot of scammers out there that I have seen first hand trying to get something for nothing. When in doubt I get a second opinion.
I feel sad about this, because I remember I used to have great stamps, but when you are kid, there is always someone who outsmarts you, so all the rare old (= ugly) stamps I gave away, exchanged them for nice and useless stamps. Exactly, I was collecting for a quantity.
The reasoning behind this person's explanation is solid but he just gives off these "I don't want to be bothered" vibes with his buttoned up look and snobbish air about him. I would not want to do business with such a person.

Another hit video from Stanley Gibbons. Well done. You should do more. Look forward to seeing the next one.
An overhead camera with better shots of the pages would have enhanced this video.

Very true just happened to me today- got offered $2.5k for portion of my stamp collection and he did everything you said
Everything you say is correct. That's exactly how most stamp dealers appraise a collection.

Very informative. Nice presentation.

Does it matter in value how neat ur albums are ,or the value of the stamps in it
Neatness does matter you want a collector that likes neat clean stuff well taken care of- not dirty messy unorganized
My husband is stamp collector he have got a lot of stamps from around the world.
Nobody cares
My mother is trying to find out the value of 4 stamps that were put out for the 90th birthday of the queen mother. How do I find out for her?
Nice video, but few good collections today would be housed in an album with hinges. Each stamp should be kept in as pristine a condition as possible.
If it's a common used stamp and not worth too much hinges are OK.
Nice & Informative :-)
Too much neat and tidy going on👀
Well done. 👍

Is selling a stamp collection worth more than selling an individual rare stamp?
Usually not. But it will take a long time to sell many individual stamps. Most people’s collections will only contain a few stamps worth more than $5.
Rare stamps are usually sold individually at an auction. But my definition of a rare stamp is not yours. The Scott Catalogue may value a stamp in VF (Very Fine Condition) for $1000. An unpopular country may fetch only $250 retail for this stamp.

Gostaria de trocar ou vender selos brasileiros com o parceiro.
IMO NEVER get a ‘value’ from Stanley Gibbons as they are notorious for offering a VERY low price. Better off with someone like Warwick and Warwick.
Is this hobby dead or almost dead now?
