- The College Financial Health Show for February 4, 2025. A financial health and viability review.
Matt Hendricks and Gary Stocker review the financial and operational health of:
Barnard College (NY) (:55)
Benedictine University (IL) (12:12)
Luther College (IA) (22:34)
Majors Completions: (34:13)
Barnard College presents as a financially strong private college across most of the measures reviewed in the show. 4-year graduation rates are really strong.
Benedictine University (IL) is the college in this show with concerns about endowment draws and decreasing net tuition revenue. In addition, their 4-year graduation rates are only around 40%
Luther College also has issues with net tuition revenue decreases, but their endowment is much larger than Benedictine. Luther's 4-year graduation rates are strong.

The news has been full of stories about college closures. In almost every situation, those media reports suggest that all involved at the closing college are surprised.
That should not be the case. There is data in every case with leading indicators that strongly suggest a college's financial and operational existence is in question.
Dr. Matt Hendricks (founder: Perspective Data Science) and Dr. Gary Stocker (founder: College Viability, LLC) bring their data skills, finance and higher education experiences to compare and contrast the financial health and viability of colleges.
They won't tell you which colleges will close; there are too many variables to be certain. But their data and analysis will strongly suggest which colleges are financially stronger - and which are not so strong.
Each week they will review 2-3 colleges across the country to provide a financial health assessment available nowhere else.

Understanding the financial landscape of private colleges is essential for students, parents, college leaders, faculty, accrediting agencies, and policymakers. By analyzing key financial indicators, we can gain valuable insights into the institutions’ stability and future prospects. As we continue to explore this complex topic, remember that financial health is just one piece of the puzzle when considering higher education options.
