    Sights and sounds of the 90s. Best era in modern railroading. Plenty of fallen flags mixing in with the new stuff, EMDs, and no high security bs.

    Awesome catch! I really do wonder why Wheeling & Lake Erie had their own engines and their own hoppers pulling trains in and out of Baltimore on CSX tracks 9 to 10 years ago.

    Oh wow... it's like you took a camera back to 1986 and recorded EMDs in their prime with modern equipment.
    This is what UP should have done with their Tunnel Motors(Both SP and D&RGW), but instead of embracing their heritage, they wore them down, then let them rust and rot on dead lines, and turned them into unrecognizable Frankenstein engines until they were literally unusable, then they sold the salvageable ones to random class 3 roads, and scrapped the rest.
    What a disrespectful and tragic end to such an iconic and legendary engine, and all because they didn't make it... you would never see them treat a UP locomotive like a DD40 like that, but because it wasn't theirs they abused them until there was nothing left, and sold them off like used needles.
    Of course SP and D&RGW did not shy away from pushing these units to their limits, but they did not neglect them, or disrespect them, it was just the nature of their freight operations, and as they were the ones who came up with the design, I'd say they earned the right to wear them down a little.
    On the bright side, the smaller roads that did acquire some tunnel motors(Like the guys in the video) have consistently been treating them with respect, probably because they feel lucky they even managed to get any locomotive for that price, let alone such a hidden gem such as a Tunnel Motor.
    Just proves the quality of EMD 2nd generation diesels, you can use and abuse them for years, and actively try to wear them down, and all it takes is a few replacement parts from the local scrapyard, and a fresh coat of paint, and voila you now have a working 3800hp locomotive to do with as you please.

      scrapped...………..I don't think so...…...I suggest you make a visit to Brasil…..a lot of ex SP and DRGW SD40T-2s serve America Latina Logistica, and FCA (now VL!)………..

    • @BenjaminEsposti
      @BenjaminEsposti 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The good thing about EMD is that they allow third party manufacturers to be licensed to make replacement components for the older EMD's. GE does not do that, they're very anal about such things, and as such, there are very few old GE's (-7/B-Boat and "U" series/U-Boats) in use today.

    • @ALL-bj7mj
      @ALL-bj7mj 5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@BenjaminEsposti there are a lot of dash 7 still running....emission controls retired them off class 1s....some regulated to shortlines….however Estonia, Brasil, Bolivia, and Colombia now own nearly all the C30-7s, C36-7s. as well as B36, and B30 models....

      Well, it would seem that W&LE has a little bit of a thing for D&RGW, notice the third unit is painted in their own colours which strike me as being almost criminally similar to the old D&RGW colours.
      I can't say for certain, but it looks almost like W&LE has been secretly maintaining these two units and keeping the Rio Grande lettering as a tribute, there is no way in hell they came off of the Southern Pacific, or Union Pacific looking like THAT.
      If I were to guess, I'd say that these two are gonna stay like that for a long time.

    Why are they called Tunnel Motors? Cool video 😎

    • @williamh.jarvis6795
      @williamh.jarvis6795 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Supposedly, with the lower air intake grills on the sides, the locomotives can take in cooler air, which does not rise like warmer air does. There is less air within a tunnel so to provide cooling of the locomotive's prime movers, therefore, it was a said to be a simple solution to lower the air intake grills.
      The Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad has acquired some of these locomotives, being numbered starting with 9##.
      Myself, I have been seeking more information about them, is why I am watching other videos about them.

    • @Mumbles19852007
      @Mumbles19852007 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Due to the radiators set up. The large grill at the rear bottom. Designed to pull cooler air from lower to the ground through the radiators to cool engine block instead of the much hotter air from the top of the locomotive. SP started this for their mountain routes which had alot of tunnels. Their standard locomotives would overheat in them. They went to EMD with their issue and this was the solution. Union Pacific jumped on the bandwagon after SP showed good results and ordered some. The SP and DRGW had the best looking units.

    In my opinion, tunnel motors should never meet the scrappers torch. All because they are innovative. At most, I'd put in a 710 just to keep the EPA silent. Or perhaps a 265 H engine. I'd rather keep these beasts running for many more years to come

      @BaltimoreAndOhioRR  10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      ya!

    • @Cnw8701
      @Cnw8701 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The 265-H engines were unreliable, consumed too much fuel, and badly polluted the environment. Diesel locomotives (except ALCO's) shouldn't smoke like steam locomotives! LOL

    • @CSX4772
      @CSX4772 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The 265H was a perfectly good engine. Unfortunately the sd9043 gave it a bad name. Nowadays the 265H would be cleaner. And way more efficient than a 710

    • @Cnw8701
      @Cnw8701 10 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Johnnie Williams
      No, that wasn't the case. The 265-H engines were indeed powerful, though they had issues with their crankshafts, pistons, electrical wiring wiring, etc. which is why UP retired all of their SD90MAC-H units in exchange for SD70ACe units (some early SD70ACe's were even kitbashed from SD90MAC-H's!) The SD9043MAC is practically a fuel-consuming (gas-guzzling) SD70ACe, and was the main and only other problem that UP ever really had with it!

    • @CSX4772
      @CSX4772 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2
