I have a farm, but I’m in a really rugged area that takes time to prepare even one fruit tree hole, so even though I’ve been at it for 6 years(starting from a bare cow pasture) I’ve only gotten in around 160 trees. They aren’t all planted in rows, it looks more natural and some are even on berms, so it’s a part time job taking care of it all. It’s average temperature 87 degrees so the weeds and grasses grow very fast. Anyway, I knew I wanted to sell and share fruits and nuts with my community, and with my son, but I never thought of making a full blown business out of it. It’s like he said, if you aren’t willing to go out and do the work the opportunities won’t present themselves. We are comfortable with what we are doing and so we have no desire to expand. We are always planting new trees, every fall we add another 15-20. We still have two acres left. If anyone out there is feeling called to this type of work, now is a good time, go for it.
@@alanwolensky correct. 18 types of grafted durian, 13 jackfruit trees(most are grafted), eight chempedak, 12 mangosteen, 4 marang, etc… all the good stuff.
@Mike 4.1 most of everything I have is a grafted clone. Avocados from a clone about two feet tall when purchased, will start to fruit at year 4-5. The grafted Jackfruits don’t seem to fruit any faster than the seeds, which I have both of. Any fruit worth growing doesn’t start to produce anything substantial until year five. Durians are about a 7-10 year wait from a clone. Mangosteens don’t benefit at all from cloning. It’s a waiting game.

You have to have determination to keep on going year after year, and also finding the trees can be difficult. Grafted durians are available but with a high demand and limited people grafting. Grafted jackfruits are hard to come by too. It depends on what you decide to grow as your crops I guess.

I invested about $10k over the last few years in subtropical and tropical fruit trees and vines. Today ive got a net worth in plants of around $100k. I mass germinate rare seeds, take clones via air layer and cuttings, graft rarer varieties onto common rootstock I grow from less rare species, and seek out newly discovered or nearly unheard of fruit species. That's been my trick so far. Great Lakes Rare Fruits is my business now. Specializing in Kadsura coccinea, Dovyalis spp, the Annonaceae and Myrtaceae families, but I'm growing everything from durian and cempedak to guava tamarillos and himalayan honeysuckle. Had I known about the rare fruit life, I wouldn't have wasted 20 years growing illicit plants and fungi. Lol
Also, a lot of the fruit that he sells isn't from his own orchard, or even from Florida. He can't meet his demand with only the fruit from his dad's orchard. They buy fruit from the wholesaler and upsell it to customers just like any other seller

All the boxes I've wanted to buy was over $200, it's cheaper for my to drive to the farm! But luckily I have found some farmers Market here in Tampa ☺️.
$100 per box is reasonable actually probably too cheap for the amount of effort going into this business. He’s paying good wages and his expense ratio is very high for an agriculture business, but he is still in business. He obviously doesn’t pay himself a lot, but he could easily cash out in land value alone with a good chunk. I love watching entrepreneurs in it for more than just money. He has a true passion for fruit! 🤗
It's not actually $100 and the fruit isnt harvested ripe and its not shipped on a plane, I've only had one good box and I've ordered 5 and all took 2 weeks from the time they were shipped to get here and were still completely dark green and never ripened except for one box of mysore bananas which were really good and all ripened properly but that was the only one I would ever order again. They also falsely advertise their dried fruits, its $20 for a bag but they dont tell you the bag is an only 2 inch by 2 inch ziplock bag with a tiny lil piece of dried fruit and every review says it's a scam and that they wish they read the reviews on the dried fruits! The cheapest size box is 5 pounds for $90 plus $20 shipping and the next size is $120 for 7-9 pounds and $20 shipping and this is for their bananas and advacados. All the better fruits are super expensive , it's like $200 for a Jack fruit or a durian and I believe those are the only ones that get shipped on planes, nothing else I've seen has said it was shipped by plane and nothing I've ordered was shipped on plane! I stopped ordering from them when I baught a rambutan box and all I got was a box of black mush I found tons of tropical fruits at a neighboring towns Safeway that are all way higher quality and super cheap in comparison, I would recomend Asian markets and Safeways way before I would Miami fruit , I hate to say it cause their business is a cool idea but it's way way way to overpriced, if things were like half the price I'd maybe order again but I've wasted like $800 and only gotten one good box and a crap ton of disappointment with all the other ones.

The fruits shown in the video are mostly tropical fruits. So, the tropicals become exotic in temperate zones and the fruits/flowers from temperate become exotic in tropical regions
The amount of work and organization required to run such a business is staggering. I am an avid gardener myself and just my one acre food forest is tough to manage. Tough is an understatement. The overhead costs are huge. Super impressive 🤙🏼👍🏼🙏🏼

Because as far as i know America is litigious country so you can’t claim if its not true. My friend alone who live in Florida has different trees of fruits in her backyard.

I have tried their product, found them to be extremely overpriced for what you get. The local Asian market seems to offer better value or even the exotic fruit aisle at the local grocery chain is cheaper.

Looks overpriced to me too. That $100 box looked to have MAYBE $20-30 worth of fruit in it. Like one of the items looked to be a single plantain which costs what? 50 cents at full retail? And from what I saw 75% of that box is available at a decent size local grocery store or Asian market. You're probably paying more for the overnight shipping than the value of the fruit. Unless you live somewhere remote and absolutely love and have to have tropical fruit, not worth it IMO.

Everything but the star apple and cacao pod are going to be pretty easily available at higher end grocery stores. Even if the Star apple would be $5 and the cacao $10, that's still only $25 total, so you're paying AT LEAST 4x actual value plus shipping to get "special" fruit. I'll never understand why the internet treats these people like business geniuses for conning people into overpaying for things.
These fruits are mostly in tropics like our country. I salute the guy for the hardwork. We usually eat those fruits without shipping cost that's why it's cheaper for us. In our provinces, we usually just pick the fruit from its tree especially when it's the season of the said fruit. That's my childhood experience actually😊😅.

yes , lol like the passion fruit people are making money abroad with it but in philippines we just pick it near the river and some people doesn’t like it because it’s sour. the star fruit , chico , guyabano, etc are just behind the house 😂.

As you know tho, it has to ripen and open on its own and is very perishable so it would need to be shipped as same day or overnight...to receive it fresh. Farming has always been a very lucrative business but it comes with its headaches. Bad weather and pests is every farmers worst nightmare. Prices of vegetables and fruits fluctuate like gold due to supply and demand. If you farm in Hawaii with 5 acres and grow the right crops, you can easily make 5 digit profits a month.
All of these fruits I grew up eating. I use to make hot chocolate from one seeds of the fruits here. We dry the seeds, roasted and dried them and made hot chocolate from it.
I live in Venezuela and you have more variety than we do. In fact I was in the biggest market in bogota yesterday and you have more 💪💪💪. But in the Bog market you can buy uchuva and a 4 foot tall marijuana plant in the same stall 😂

Well in transporting Figs and Raspberries. . The challenge is timing..cushion. .and locality .. transporting raspberries. .the fruit should be ALMOST RIPE.. harvested with the vine .. they are harder and sustain transportation
tbf,depends on the fruit,from what I've heard his boxes aren't worth that, but with the food forest i have in mind that if I'm lucky will be ready within 5-10 years, i could easily create a box worth $100 just use a bunch of annonas or however it's spelled, soursop,sweet sop,rollinia,custard apple etc etc. plus some rambutan,mangosteen, lychee, and tons of other options like jackfruit and goji berries or acai berries, with those first several selling for $10-$20 per fruit,it's easy to sell a hundred worth.

$100 per box is reasonable actually probably too cheap for the amount of effort going into this business. He’s paying good wages and his expense ratio is very high for an agriculture business, but he is still in business. He obviously doesn’t pay himself a lot, but he could easily cash out in land value alone with a good chunk. I love watching entrepreneurs in it for more than just money. He has a true passion for fruit! 🤗
that's quite expensive but if people are willing to pay that's actually a good thing, they value quality food produced in good conditions

It's not actually $100 and the fruit isnt harvested ripe and its not shipped on a plane, I've only had one good box and I've ordered 5 and all took 2 weeks from the time they were shipped to get here and were still completely dark green and never ripened except for one box of mysore bananas which were really good and all ripened properly but that was the only one I would ever order again. They also falsely advertise their dried fruits, its $20 for a bag but they dont tell you the bag is an only 2 inch by 2 inch ziplock bag with a tiny lil piece of dried fruit and every review says it's a scam and that they wish they read the reviews on the dried fruits! The cheapest size box is 5 pounds for $90 plus $20 shipping and the next size is $120 for 7-9 pounds and $20 shipping and this is for their bananas and advacados. All the better fruits are super expensive , it's like $200 for a Jack fruit or a durian and I believe those are the only ones that get shipped on planes, nothing else I've seen has said it was shipped by plane and nothing I've ordered was shipped on plane! I stopped ordering from them when I baught a rambutan box and all I got was a box of black mush I found tons of tropical fruits at a neighboring towns Safeway that are all way higher quality and super cheap in comparison, I would recomend Asian markets and Safeways way before I would Miami fruit , I hate to say it cause their business is a cool idea but it's way way way to overpriced, if things were like half the price I'd maybe order again but I've wasted like $800 and only gotten one good box and a crap ton of disappointment with all the other ones.

All of those fruits can easily grow here in front of our house in Indonesia. Glad to know how you grow fruit out there in the US and how hurricane can easily wipe out the farms, that's pretty challenging. I would like you to come taste most of our exotic fruits just under $10 and most importantly you can buy almost everything all year long. 😁

The fruits shown in the video are mostly tropical fruits. So, the tropicals become exotic in temperate zones and the fruits/flowers from temperate become exotic in tropical regions
The amount of work and organization required to run such a business is staggering. I am an avid gardener myself and just my one acre food forest is tough to manage. Tough is an understatement. The overhead costs are huge. Super impressive 🤙🏼👍🏼🙏🏼

Farming anywhere is not easy, it takes an amazing amount of organization, commitment and networking plus a team that is 💯 aligned to the same goal. Being more realistic and less idealistic. He has his game spot on plus his lady has been such a major contributor.

Yes i agree, when hands are muddy and you get a call, you dont need to grab your phone and get it all dirty; or you can go off 3 hours wheedwhacking cause you made a fire playlist, or zone out listening to an audiobook just makes the hours fly fast when alone in the farm
The lesson I pick up from Rane's success is that if you have passion, you can scale great heights. Rane is a real inspiration. Starting with a bike and $200 , he has built a great business and that too environmentally sustainable.

Because as far as i know America is litigious country so you can’t claim if its not true. My friend alone who live in Florida has different trees of fruits in her backyard.

I am well aware of the taste, child. I grew up eating organic stuff, I am a gardener myself, and traveled extensively. I also bought the stuff from Miami Fruits and was very unimpressed in terms of taste, quantity, and quality. Unless you're his paid puppet, you should really do research before you put your foot in your mouth.

Looks overpriced to me too. That $100 box looked to have MAYBE $20-30 worth of fruit in it. Like one of the items looked to be a single plantain which costs what? 50 cents at full retail? And from what I saw 75% of that box is available at a decent size local grocery store or Asian market. You're probably paying more for the overnight shipping than the value of the fruit. Unless you live somewhere remote and absolutely love and have to have tropical fruit, not worth it IMO.
@@Josh-gi8ht In my box, I got 1 cacao pod, 1 small caviar lemon, 5 small kumquats, 1 small banana, 1 small yellow dragon fruit, 1 blood orange, and 1 small star apple. The shipping was extra. Not worth the 140 dollars approximately.
@@RMConsulting That's insane. The lemon, kumquats, banana, and orange are maybe $4-5 total. The dragon fruit maybe 5. Everything but the star apple and cacao pod are going to be pretty easily available at higher end grocery stores. Even if the Star apple would be $5 and the cacao $10, that's still only $25 total, so you're paying AT LEAST 4x actual value plus shipping to get "special" fruit. I'll never understand why the internet treats these people like business geniuses for conning people into overpaying for things.
These fruits are mostly in tropics like our country. I salute the guy for the hardwork. We usually eat those fruits without shipping cost that's why it's cheaper for us. In our provinces, we usually just pick the fruit from its tree especially when it's the season of the said fruit. That's my childhood experience actually😊😅.

yes , lol like the passion fruit people are making money abroad with it but in philippines we just pick it near the river and some people doesn’t like it because it’s sour. the star fruit , chico , guyabano, etc are just behind the house 😂.

There's no reason someone should stop themselves from trying new fruit if they feel like dropping the money on it. Some people like travelling abroad for fruit and some like fruit coming to them. Yes, We have ackee here. I'm in the same area as them. As you know tho, it has to ripen and open on its own and is very perishable so it would need to be shipped as same day or overnight...to receive it fresh. Also, I would think we would have to process it since its toxic if not done properly, as Im sure you know. that would take a lot of work to sell.

Farming has always been a very lucrative business but it comes with its headaches. Bad weather and pests is every farmers worst nightmare. Prices of vegetables and fruits fluctuate like gold due to supply and demand. If you farm in Hawaii with 5 acres and grow the right crops, you can easily make 5 digit profits a month.

All of these fruits I grew up eating. I use to make hot chocolate from one seeds of the fruits here. We dry the seeds, roasted and dried them and made hot chocolate from it.

Well in transporting Figs and Raspberries. . The challenge is timing..cushion. .and locality .. transporting raspberries. .the fruit should be ALMOST RIPE.. harvested with the vine .. they are harder and sustain transportation

tbf,depends on the fruit,from what I've heard his boxes aren't worth that, but with the food forest i have in mind that if I'm lucky will be ready within 5-10 years, i could easily create a box worth $100 just use a bunch of annonas or however it's spelled, soursop,sweet sop,rollinia,custard apple etc etc.
plus some rambutan,mangosteen, lychee, and tons of other options like jackfruit and goji berries or acai berries, with those first several selling for $10-$20 per fruit,it's easy to sell a hundred worth.
Wow,Rambutan,belimbing/starfruit,sirsak/zoorzak,sawo,banana,durian....almost half fruits in my country
