    I NOW know what a binary tear looks like and the difference between foxing and tanning. Even though u didn't have an example of foxing I appreciate you explaining it. So I really appreciate u taking the time to do this video..I don't know much about editing, but it's evident it took alot of time and effort so I for one appreciate it.
    Also, U said u may struggle with having defect examples in ur collection for future videos...don't worry I'm ur guy on this...I've got tanning and apparently foxing..blunting tears, cutouts, missing pages...detachments...water damage, sun damage ..missing staples...too many staples..u need tape examples? ..I got some tape too..and I got some good stuff... whatcha need Regie. haha

    Great video! One thing also worth mentioning is the dreaded "subscription crease" which is very common in silver and bronze age books. There were no LCS back then, so a lot of people could only get their comics via subscription. They came in the mail with nothing more than a paper sleeve wrapped around the book. Mailmen back then treated comics like flyers or newspapers and folded or bent them lengthwise to fit in mailboxes. Usually grading companies are a little forgiving with subscription creases, since it was a "product of the era" similar to date stamps.

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      👍 A subscription crease will typically result in a mid-grade 7.0 or less according to CBCS.

    Great video, Regie! I'm still getting caught up on your past work.
    While you were discussing the condition of the FF 49 (starting at about 17:35) I asked myself, "who was Mike Marvel?"
    I've been into strength training for years, and have read about famous bodybuilders of the 1960s, but I'd never heard of this guy -- unlike the other BBer's who appeared in similar comic-book ads -- Dave Draper, Schwarzenegger, Charles Atlas, etc.
    Well, it appears that "Mike Marvel" was a pseudonym used by a guy named Frank Rudolph Young, who wrote a bunch of yoga books back in the day. He also promoted some weird occult-ish stuff.
    The more you know... :)

    Thanks very much Regie, definitely enjoyed it and found it informative.
    These are certainly useful tips to bear in mind when browsing through the back issues bins in my LCS...
    You mention how the grading sites detail the defects on their sites, and I have been wanting to learn more about the different levels of grading and what qualifies the grade - but as you correctly pointed out, it is somewhat harder to learn this as they don't show visuals (they just list the descriptions of defects).
    I know I would personally love to see more videos like this, particularly an introductory video on the basics of knowing the difference between a 2.0, 4.0, 6.0, 8.0, 9.2 9.6, 9.8 etc...
    Thanks again for the great content,
    Thomas

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for the feedback. I'm glad that you found the video helpful. Once you have an understanding of the defects and what they mean it's pretty easy to understand the differences between a 2.0 and 4.0 for example. The difference is more defects. At the end of the day, that's what we are really talking about. Put another way, there is a long list of defects that could result in a book being a 2.0 and an equally long list of defects that result in a book being a 4.0 so trying to compare the two is like comparing an apple to a pineapple. With that said, the list of differences between a 9.8 and 9.6 is a little easier to compare because you are talking about tiny differences. Here is a video that looks at that comparison: th-cam.com/video/4lXoXFu6-tc/w-d-xo.html
      Here is a video where I talk about the basics of comic book grading with the head grader at CGC. This a long but solid foundational video: th-cam.com/video/Q0VMjfc2O8E/w-d-xo.html

    Great video. I am definitely interested in seeing more like this. I am curious as to how the White - off-white, tan, etc. classification of interior pages can affect an otherwise near-mint in its exterior presentation. Is it worth it to have on OWL card?

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The information is a little light on this one. Generally speaking, brittle pages will bring down a grade. Off-white pages on the other hand probably have very little impact. Personally, I feel like page color is more about desirability on the part of the collector versus something that dramatically impacts grade. Put another way, some collectors only want white pages.

    Thanks as always, Regie. Great video. The thing I'm struggling with most as a new collector is grading a 9.8 for submission. I mean how far can you go before it drops to a 9.6? I know it says a couple minor defects, but what are those? Whats passable or non-passable? Are we talking small verticle stress lines on the spine or a small indent, or a small binary tear. If you do have one, how small has it got to be? However you then see some books, that have been graded at 9.8, but have a visable defect like a small spine tick, I guess my question is, where is the line? As CGC's standards for a 9.8 seem inconsistent i think.

    If you haven't already (working my way backwards through your stuff), I'd love to see you do a video on spine roll. Is there a way to fix it (by the collector) or once it's there, is it forever? I have to think professional restorers have a way to deal with it. What about--and I know this is cringe to the max--disassembling the book and pressing each individual page & the cover then putting it back together (hopefully with the original staples)?

    • @RegieCollects

It's got considerable damage to the centerfold due to it sliding out of the book, but is having just the one staple a defect?

    Walmart now sells the new comics from Allegiance Arts. As best I can tell 100% of them have a price sticker on the cover. I'm wondering if the price sticker will detract from the CGC grade any? Especially since trying to remove it could cause more problems than it solves. So for grading purposes, do we leave it alone? Or do we remove the price sticker?

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Are you thinking about getting those comics graded?

    • @JaysonSlade
      @JaysonSlade 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regie Collects Today? No. Later? Meh. Eventually, maybe. But I would like to maintain them and store them in a way that’s conducive to future collectibility. Back in the 70s I’d remove all price stickers from what I bought. Nowadays, it’s regarded kinda like a date stamp and I see toys graded WITH the price stickers and it doesn’t seem to matter much. But I believe if I’m ever going to try and remove the stickers, now would likely be more sensible before the glue has a few years to become permanently bonded. However, I’m thinking since the sticker is actually from the only store that sells them and it has the title and number printed on it... maybe it’s not that big a deal. Just looking for opinions. Also, I see there being very little, if any, chances that very many of these will ever be 9.8’s. The type of paper alone is begging for box wear and smudges from being stacked together. If you hold one, you’ll know what I mean. But they are good! They came highly recommended. And I’m glad I bought a few.

    Hey Reggie. I’m curious about the Cgc quick press. Have you ever noticed a difference in your books from just the quick press and not the full press? If so, what defects do you find the quick press is good for? Thanks.

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I like the quick press for modern books. The full press is for older books and or those with more damage. Put another way, a spine roll probably is not a quick press defect. Does this help?

    • @jamesrobertson5370
      @jamesrobertson5370 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Regie Collects Yes that helps. But I’m more curious about just how much the quick press alone accomplishes. Have you seen any noticeable difference in your books from a quick press? For example have you sent a book away with a minor defect that you knew was there and when you got the book back that defect was no longer there?

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The quick press is effective for removing minor imperfections such as those seen on modern books. If you have an older book with tiny defects a quick press will also work. Have I personally seen improvements with a quick press, yes. Can modern books benefit from a press? Yes.
      Extensive defects such as spine rolls, subscription creasing, lots of bends, folks, etc which are typically for older books may require a full press.

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No. A crease is a fold in the paper that can break the color. The ripples are waviness that can occur during the production process because of the papers and inns used with modern comics. Waviness will not hurt a comic’s grade but creases will. With that said, wavy paper can look awful in a slab.

    When it comes to the binary tears, if cgc are willing to ignore them, should they not also be ignoring all other printing/manufacturing defects?
    There job should be to accurately grade a collectable according to a set standard. If there are no 9.8s of a certain issue due to the whole run having a defect, thats just how it should be.
    I feel they heavily cater to the companies and sellers who pre sell guaranteed grades.

    Hello

    So does the under/over wrap hurt the grade?

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Off the top of my head, I do not recall mis-wraps being a grading criteria but with that said, the mis-wrap can introduce defects to the book. For example, an under-wrap can expose the pages below resulting in them browning. An over-wrap can result in horizontal color breaks and creases because of the overhand hitting the side of the bag. Even if none of these things do not occur, mis-wraps can impact the comics appearance (and value) in the minds of some collectors.

    I have a question, I have a comic book that has a dent in it's cover, what grade does it fall to?

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No clue.
      I say that because grading isn’t determined by a single defect. A grade is determined by the overall condition of the book. Even if the book was perfect save for the dent a lot would be determined by the size and shape of the dent. Does the dent break color and moreover is the dent a pressible defect?
      These are just some of the reasons why your question can’t be answered with a simple number.

    One question:
    What happened to the book if the staples are on the back cover, the wrap on the back exposing the pages very noticibly (1cm) and on the front the cover is still exposing only a very little of the pages?
    It can‘t be an overwrap because on the front the cover is not going over the pages.
    (Hopefully I worded this right 😅)

      Just call it a mis-wrap.

    My copy of Swamp Thing 37 (1st John Constantine) is one of the worst over-wraps I've ever seen. As it's an error at the printer stage, would it effect grade?

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Printer defects typically do not impact grade. They can effect desirability. Here is a video on printer defects: th-cam.com/video/_a5GNj1Ye1o/w-d-xo.html

    How does the polybag cause that crease?

    • @RegieCollects
      @RegieCollects  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It comes from the seams of the bags.
      There is a seam on the backside that creates an impressions in the back of the book. Because there is no backing board when these books are stacked or placed in a box, the back seam creates an impression on the front of the next book.

    Wow, I thought I was a freakish anomaly, the only comic book collector who was also a gun collector and shooter. Those two things aren't ever supposed to go together. As portrayed in popular culture, comic book enthusiasts are typically depicted as nerdy, dweeby, geeky, usually overweight guys (never girls), who probably also have big collections of action figures and Star Wars memorabilia.
    Gun enthusiasts are nearly always depicted as (also overweight) rude, crude, coarse, insensitive, unimaginative, uneducated, uncultured, white racist rednecks and hillbillies who never read a book voluntarily (if they can read at all), and like to ride around yelling "Yee-haw!" and spitting tobacco juice out the window of their pickup trucks.
    At least that's how Stephen King almost invariably depicts them, with the possible exception of Roland Deschain of Gilead, the antihero of his Dark Tower saga, and King (who really hates the right to bear arms a lot) doesn't even seem to like Roland much, and goes out of his way to make him suffer like a b@$+@rd and to show him in the worst possible light. (Sort of the way I don't think Alan Moore ever liked Rorschach, and went far out of his way to make him repulsive, and was shocked and horrified that many readers respected and even loved the creation he had lost control of.)
    Anyway, Regie, it's my very good honor to meet you and you may call me Dave.

      What’s interesting is that I assumed the same thing a few times. 🤣🤣
      As a collector/fitness person I thought I would be an anomaly. I wasn’t. I assumed I would be the same as a collector/firearms person and again I was wrong.
      Collectors are people with a diverse set of interests. Appreciate you.
