It's called frost heave, Ryan. Seems to be more obvious in sandy soil. My patio pavers heave so much they individually crack to pieces and poke up a half inch. Makes it harder to shovel snow.
Just a few ideas to get the creative juices flowing: 1) let us see brush day - I could watch chipping, burning, clearing, trailblazing. 2) You're a musician - how about an amphitheater with a stage and a large canopy for a place to friends to hang out in the rain? Use up those thinner treetop poles. 3) Don't be shy about sprinkling in more philosophy - people like those inner thoughts. 4) Wooden simple machines - planes, levers, axles, etc. things to make moving and placing logs easier. 5) Speaking of machines, how many people in the UP have a trebuchet? 😁 Love the channel and your creativity - keep it up!
Love the videos and your sense of humor. Love the longer videos like this one. I have so much respect and am amazed of the quality and ingenuity you have. Stay safe and God bless from Missouri
Missed you last week. So enjoy your videos.. so glad when I woke up there was your video! My husband and I bought a Polaris this winter so we have been having a bit of fun with it. Will have more enjoyment once the snow has melted on the bush trails. Have a blast with your new workhorse! 🇨🇦
Great machine, I bought one just like it to replace a 25+ year old Honda 300 that we use to plow snow with at the cabin. The 300 still runs and I kept it to use for firewood gathering etc.
Of all the channels I follow, this is the only one that I've watched every single episode since the beginning. I went back to check and I haven't missed a single one. Wow! I love watching the progress and the fun you're having. I couldn't live in a little tent like that year round, but I could do it in a wall tent or tiny cabin. I'd love to live out in the woods. I'd never get bored.
Building a bigger cabin . . . or a sauna? That's a tough choice. One thing I do while chipping branches with a small chipper is to keep some good lopping(pruning) shears on hand to cut off big forked branches and to shorten limbs that are too long to run through the chipper before the flywheel loses its momentum. I hold the loppers with one handle tucked into my armpit so I can grab and hold the branches with the one hand while I pull the loppers to cut with the other hand. Thanks for the video Ryan!
Really really missed you. I love all the ‘ridiculous’ things you do! It’s kinda like Disneyland in the bush. Reminds me of my youth running wild with all my cousins on grandmas farm ( 100 acres). Stay safe my friend 👵🏼🥰😘🇨🇦
Ya I think your right, we call them frost heaves , it happens mostly when it starts to warm up a little. When it warms up more it actually drives the frost down which in turn pushes other things up . It's even worse if there is alot of water around . As far as building a cabin , why not .............you got nothing else to do lol great video as always !!
You should look for a cheap or broken kayak. Cut off the point just big enough to pass your tow strap through. Make another cut around the cockpit. You can then place the ends of logs inside the kayak and the tow strap through the tip of the kayak. You’ll be able to pull more and heavier logs without them getting stuck or hung up.
@@SteveLouzon I built my cabin last year and use wood heat. It takes some skill to keep the temp BELOW 80 degrees when that fire is burning! Never cold as long as there is wood around
he just dosent have the time / dosent seem fun to split the wood needed. with all the other projects also the initial investment of a decent stove he dosent wanna spend. he has a crappy wood stove in the lean too never see him use it.
Great video… like the idea of an open area and it makes cutting trees easy if you are remove them from a set area. If you need ideas about how to spend your TH-cam dollars, have you ever tried a cordwood structure. Since you have a lot of not lumber logs or small trees that aren’t really big enough for cutting lumber you could invest in a couple of bags of mortar and see what you could create. Maybe a post and beam type thing with the walls infilled. Not saw-milling but cutting stuff to a set length for your wall thickness and then play with blocks and mud. Sooner or later it has to warm up enough to try something different. Thanks for sharing and enjoy a warm dry sleeping bag!
Your physics are 100% correct on the reason for the un-leveling of the cabin. The ground freezes and the moisture expands. The path of least resistance is up to the surface and it lifts the rocks in the ground and anything setting on it (the log footings) as well as any moisture still in the logs footings would also expand (very little depending on moisture content) causing that side to lift. The other side on the stumps is set as the stumps have dried out and are positively located in the ground rather than on top of it. (If the stumps have shallow roots they can lift as well but not nearly as much as something on top of the ground.
I love the color! Red is my favorite color. I would paint everything red. By the way, miss Saturday morning watching on TH-cam. Keep on making our videos. Haha
"They" say the deer like to eat the top Branches of the pines. And Yes.. it makes lots of sense to cut those Y branches BEFORE you sever them from the trunk. Trying to get those Y's thru a shredder is a no no. PS. Love the new " machine" for its dependability... you NEED that.
Good to have you back Ryan and thank you for sharing your world with us. Lots of good comments here. I like the thoughts on adding on to the man cave, insulation, and a wood stove or fireplace. Regardless of what you decide I will enjoy watching your channel. As someone said below, you are still young to many of us. Hopefully as you build you will start looking for ways to live easier way down the road. Do a few favors for your future self. Again, love your channel and ALL that you are able to do.
Nice new ATV. Looks like you are also a tried and true Honda fanitic. I had the exact same 350 as you previously. 2001 model and had it for 15 years without any issues, just replaced the tires. Currently have the Rubicon 520. All were great for towing as I also spend a lot if time in the woods and cut approximately 7 cords of wood per year. One suggestion on the colour. Consider getting a vinyl wrap for the bike r even use the Plasti-dip paint. Put any colour or design you want on it. Plus, you can remove both the vinyl wrap or the Plasti-dip paint at anytime. If I am not misaken, the camo finish on the Honda ATV’s s just a vinyl wrap anyway. Enjoy your channel.
With 3 inches of ice on the roof and temps rising…ladders need to be moved. As ice begins to slide off of roof, they may be crushed. Thanks for the unique perspective and taking the time to document and share. Your channel is very entertaining!!!
Love the channel in watch every video you put out. As for the cabin don't build a 200square foot one just build three like you have now side by side. one for a kitchen one for sleeping one for living room or some thing like that. Take care and stay safe.
Cabin twice as big sounds wonderful. You could put a wood stove in middle of cabin like swedish do to heat their homes. You can even build a rock fireplace in middle of cabin. 😃
Your exactly right Ryan. Frost line up there probably 38 to 40 inches. Im in the northern lower and its in that range here. The tree stumps aren't as affected by frost as the ground surface. As the roots break down they might move as well. Doesn't the dear castle have a similar foundation makeup ?
Maybe before you build your cabin, you could build a covered outdoor kitchen/shower area. You could warm up your water with wood on the outdoor grill for your shower and save on propane.
Everyday I watch a few videos and think about what I can build. I think my spring projects will be a bathhouse, finish up the main cabin and then add a zipline for the kids to go across the creek. I am completely offgrid, running on solar and just got a hand pump for my well. I am roughly 28miles in the woods and will more than likely setup a chainsaw mill or sawmill so I can skip the drives into town. I have seen quite a few videos and I am not sure if you ever mention how much land you have.
Gonna love the new gun range. For rifle, can you clear other side of trail back another 50'-70'? And need to get a small stove fan. Get more air moving in the cabin to help circulate the warm air. But upper drying rack turned out great
I figured we would see a video from you this week with the nice weather we've been having. Glad to see you getting that motivation back after being gone.....we need Saturday morning laughs. I pulled my alaskan mill out this week and was able to mill a bunch of 1" boards for my chicken coop build.....keep on keeping on brotha man!
Don't forget to clean the gas filter every year, It's easy to forget since we don't see them. I don't know about the 2022 model, but my rancher 420 2013 has a very small filter , smaller than a tea pouch. Once the filter starts to cause restriction , it's just a matter of time before the feul pump goes bad and you have to change the whole feul pump...$$$$. You made a good choice by not having an electric shift model, especially if you keep it a long time. Have fun !!!
Another thought.....build Another small cabin next to your existing building. Connect them with a breezeway. You can close in the breezeway in winter leave it open when it's warm. Enjoying a re-watch today. Good 2nd time. Stay safe Ryan

I’m so happy it was just a broken down 4 wheeler, I was worried something happened to you. I missed you last weekend. By the way I like the red, Santa has a red sleigh.

Hi Ryan-- glad to see U back. Ha I had a crazy idea for U. That platform your tent is on-- well build like U did your screen porch but around you tent platform & also put doors that U can open clear back from corner to corner. When it rains or snow U can close doors as little or as much as U like. That way U could still live in your tent. U have all that wood cut so use it in a fireplace. That way U have both of what U want. U could really make it nice. I just got out of hospital from shoulder surgery so I'm typing with one finger. They had to sew muscle back together, fix rodery & take some other stuff off. Doc said it was really a mess. So I've got my right shoulder in a sling. I've watched this video 3 times now so I thought I would run this by U. What do U think? Be safe out their.. God Bless.. Phoenix
Ice buildup could lift shingles, to mitigate: install some soffit under the eave and take the blocker out to the end so some heat can get out to the there. Nice quad, can't go wrong with a Honda!! And from experience with living in poorly insulated buildings, some skirting around the building will help keep it warmer. I live in an RV in Canada!
Paint the underside of fenders a lighter color, like sand or tan. Makes it easier to see all the pieces & parts. Then paint the rest camouflage. There is also a clear bed liner, to make it scratch resistant. Maybe bring the wood chipper to the areas (trails) you want to cover. Instead of gravel. Spending money on tools isn't terrible. The 4-wheeler makes sense. My last pickup, I bought a bank repo for $625, put another $800 into it, & it's been running great for 5+ years. Frugal is the way to be.
I know what you mean, I got excited over a table and chair once. After not having either for a while ya kinda learn to appreciate those things in a more thorough manner.
Hey Ryan, give your new toy a break already and stop face dragging the logs into stumps and other things because it's just wearing parts out faster, using more gas and can be remedied with a simple sled to drag the log with...even an old Volkswagen hood, something, anything even a wheel-less little red wagon will work by placing it under the end of the log, securing the logs end to the sled's head, and THEN dragging it,( the sled ) into camp or the milling area by the sled itself. This will also stop impacting dirt into the ends of the logs that will then dull your chainsaw chains that much quicker. Just a thought...
I have wired many a garden raised bed with that mesh wire, dig it boinging on you. Get some “S” hooks to hang stuff up on the bottom of your drying rack. Or make some from old hinges n rebar?
I'm so thankful my Dad didn't like living alone in the woods alone. He LOVED living with his wife and family!❤ And he built us a cabin on a lake, and took us camping and fishing!
Maybe build a cabinet in between studs with it hanging outside to put propane tanks in to keep inside to keep warm and out of way . And you could put door on it inside so don’t have to see tank just cut vents in door for heat to get to tank… but I would have got a small wood stove same size as your propane stove , with all that wood. They use in hot tents , I have one in my deer house blind , and keeps it as warm as I want. I would insulate the man she’d so not using a lot of gas and put a heat powered fan on stove . A damper won’t work in pipe because the stove flame is controlled by you not same as wood….maybe some foil behind pipe to reflect heat back out in room ….you can get camouflage skins to put on 4 wheeler , I went to 4 dealers to get what I wanted Kodiak 700 Yamaha from Grizzly . Wanted lower but same power and only little bit lower so I can get on and off with my bad hips and in camouflage.
I completely agree about the red! Consider painting it with raptor liner. Durabak is the best option, and they make smooth versions. That thing would be scratch proof. Also, have you thought about putting up a high tunnel greenhouse and building a cabin inside? All sorts of options with thermal mass and water that would help keep things 50+ degrees.
I look forward to your videos. Thanks for the content you share and the length of your videos. You accomplish a lot to share with us. Love the new 4 wheeler! Matches the trailer! Next week.....bye.
Thinking about heat, could be worth Iooking at the Jean Pain method - Using the heat given off by composting wood chips - especially as you seem to have a neverending supply
If you board up the inside of that mini cabin and swap out that type of propane stove you will be surprised how well it would heat. My mini 2 story cabin gets above 70 dnstairs and upstairs is a sauna
I like the red. It matches the small trailer. I think it is a good safety feature being red. I enjoy your channel.
Exactly!
Same as i thought
Makes it easier to find in the snow.
It's called frost heave, Ryan. Seems to be more obvious in sandy soil. My patio pavers heave so much they individually crack to pieces and poke up a half inch. Makes it harder to shovel snow.
Put a camouflage wrap on the body panels instead of paint. That would fit in. Congrats on the new purchase
That's exactly what I'd do. I cannot stand the red.
Excellent idea Metal Horses!
Camo wrap is the way to go.
I would leave it red as it would be a lot harder to loose it in the woulds and snow.
You won’t be disappointed with a rancher, they are immortal
So glad to see you back!

Great stuff, and if you hate spending money, consider insulating the roof, that alone will save you a ton of money in propane.

This will also stop impacting dirt into the ends of the logs that will then dull your chainsaw chains that much quicker.
Just a thought...
Red is nice. What’s wrong with one spec of color in this vast area. I hope you reconsider.
Have a great week, happy to see you back
I have wired many a garden raised bed with that mesh wire, dig it boinging on you. Get some “S” hooks to hang stuff up on the bottom of your drying rack. Or make some from old hinges n rebar?
Yes miss your videos. I think it
will be good at least you see coming and love that color red
Love the hood ornament!
Wire closet shelving would do well around the stove flue pipe.
What year Honda Rancher did you buy, was it expensive. How many acres do you own.
Great videos keep them coming.
I’d like to see you make a gutter system on the cabin going to your water bins to collect rain water.
I'm so thankful my Dad didn't like living alone in the woods alone. He LOVED living with his wife and family!❤ And he built us a cabin on a lake, and took us camping and fishing!
I’ve been looking for this jacket he wears and I can’t find one like it anywhere. Nice four wheeler
What are your thoughts on building a log cabin as your next big build instead of milling the wood to lumber? Plenty of cedar trees you could use.
I second that!
thirds..
You could put your solar panels on the North side of your clearing. Maybe even a vegetable garden. Grow your own French toast.
I’d get the smallest wood stove I could find (or build) and put that in the cabin so quick! I do like to be warm!
If you board up the inside of that mini cabin and swap out that type of propane stove you will be surprised how well it would heat. My mini 2 story cabin gets above 70 dnstairs and upstairs is a sauna
Someone mentioned bedliner for paint that will make it tough, vinyl rap is a option too :))
I like your longer videos. It’s like watching a TV series. Other TH-cam folks are giving only 10 minutes..
Will you ever put in a small garden?
See, we told you to “chip it” and you did! Thanks for listening to us! 😁
Could you insulate the walls of the cabin with the wood chips or saw dust? I'm not sure if it would work, it's just a thought.
You could grind the edges smooth on the wire mesh with your Ryobi grinder/sander. The tape might get sticky with the heat.
27:35 I knew you looked somewhat like someone famous and that's who it is. Couldn't think of it but Mike Rowe is who I was thinking of
