Iv been growing mine in bags and pots for about six years and iv never been disappointed I use ordinary shop bought potatoes 🥔 and I’ve done really well out of them. Save a few bob, too.
      Keep some of your crop as next year's seeders and there's you ahead of the game already.
      One plant from each tuber, one potato from each plant and there's the following year's seeders and so on.
      A conservative yield of 10lbs of spuds from each plant and _ker-ching,_ as it all adds up.
      Time saved traipsing to greengrocers, as well.
      What's not to love about gardening?!

    I grew sweet potatoes last year in a "pallet box". It was a display box for cacti at a big box store. They were throwing it away. So, I took it home and covered the outside with landscaping fabric. I only planted 4 slips and got about 65 pounds of sweet potatoes. I planted late here. It was July 30. Then, on Halloween, I dug them up. I was shocked. All I did was put them in good soil and made sure they stayed watered. Easiest thing I've ever grown. They looked and tasted far superior to anything I could have bought at the grocery store.

    • @asiangoddess4606
      @asiangoddess4606 9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Just make frame or use chicken wire to make round shapes with the landscaping fabric.
      Do not use pallets. They are treated with pesticides and other toxic chemicals to ward off bugs during transport of goods.

    • @stevetheflash2
      @stevetheflash2 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The pallet depends on how the wood was treated, so not all pallets are dangerous.

    I plant in the ground rather than in bags, because then I don't have to water so much, I can mulch them and keep them cool enough to have good tuber set. It seems like the soil temperatures in pots, for people in warm climates, can get too hot to have the most favorable conditions for potatoes, reducing their yield (not sweet potatoes which like heat, but regular potatoes which like cool soil).. I really like German Butterball for high yields, great storage, and they can produce some real lunkers. Purple Viking are the most beautiful potato I've ever seen and grow well. There are so many potato varieties it's easy to get carried away! : )

    I grew Ratte 2nd earlies -Yum - in containers last year. Neighbours were delighted to receive the surplus. I kept some with some of the compost around them in a cardboard box in the dark and they were fine weeks later (and hadn't sprouted). I'm growing Ratte again this year and trying Arran Pilot 1st earlies. The spuds started worryingly slowly this cold spring and then salt-laden gales in my seaside town battered the foliage but it's recovered. Unlike the runner beans, which were shredded.

      My potatoes took AGES to emerge, but they're now growing fast. Hopefully you have time to re-sow the runner beans not it's a bit warmer.

    Sorry I pressed send before finished, I just kind of popped them in a full trough of soil I had spare but I did top up new stuff from my new grow bags. My 1st ones were white potatoes, ones we usually get from Asda.
    My daughter got some red rooster ones and she left some in a bag they had used and this time I've done it through your video so thanks for the stuff I didn't do in 1st place but hopefully they should be okay. I've subscribed because I want to grow some veg and fruit 😁

    Hi there, I decided one day after seeing my potatoes sprouting that I would grow my own, I have a small yard with a small built rockery and pots and hanging baskets. And the plants are massive now.

    I found a small, red potato on the floor at work last month. I was going to throw it away but for some reason, put it in my shirt pocket. I ended up planting it at home (in a pot) and it is now 7" tall. Now that I know how stupid easy they are to grow, I plan on trying to grow some in season, properly. Thank you for showing us how!

    Very informative video. Couple of questions though. 1. What soil type is best recommended for growing sack potatoes? 2. Will it grow in any kind of weather? 3. Can it be grown all year round or is there a season for it? 4. Can one use organic fertilizer (chicken/cow dung) and at what stages? 5. How many weeks/months after planting should I except to start harvesting?
    Sorry I know I said a couple questions 😃

      In answer to your questions Emmanuel:
      1. You can use any potting mix, or a mixture of garden compost and garden soil. But lighter, all-purpose potting mix is best.
      2. Potatoes will be killed by the frost, so as long as you can avoid frosty conditions they should grow. They prefer it warm, but not very hot - particularly potatoes in sacks.
      3. Best to plant in the spring, as the weather is warming up, with a view to harvesting in the summer. In some climates potatoes are also planted later in summer for a crop in mid autumn - so long as frosts can be avoided.
      4. You can use organic fertiliser. Best applied very lightly as you add the potting mix. Not essential though.
      5. Anywhere from 10 weeks to 20 weeks, depending on what type of potato you are growing.

      It is very low fuss, so great for gardeners who don't have much time. Good luck if you decide to grow them.

    Thank you so much for this - really informative. I've just set out a few potatoes for chitting for my first ever "container" season. Just a few leftover spuds from Lidl.

      Ray I am very new to this, where can you buy certified seed potatoes? Do they sell them in bag in garden centres..? Thank you

    I’ve had the best luck with the 3$ bag of top soil from Lowe’s, cut a couple X shapes into the bag and plant seed potatoes just barely in the hole where the X is, water it about once every 2-3 weeks and give it 2-3 months and each 40lb bag of top soil has produced more than 10 lbs no less than 7lbs per bag but neither have gone over 15 lbs

    This is the second year I grow potato in containers. Last year we tried desiree and kennebec. It was okayish... I didn't add extra potash or phosporus. This year I put extra potash and phosporus and we are growing Purple Sapphire, Red Pontiac, Sebago and Dutch Cream. Hoping to get better yields 😊
