    As a retired cop who had to use my issued .38 three times during my 30 year career I still carry a 5 shot J frame. Like many others I’ve tried the tiny .380 pistols and while they are easier to carry, I haven’t found a single model to be 100% reliable.

      And the expansion is either not there or very inconsistent with the mouse size guns. I love my Taurus 605 loaded with PDX1 357 mag. If I run 38 special I use soft lead. Can't find any hollow points that are consistent expansion. They just can't dump the denim in that threshold of velocity. In bare gel they work. 158 gr LRN do some fantastic work in the human body. Just ask Lee Harvey Oswald?

      Agreed. I had big issues with my S&W Bodyguard .380 and my Ruger LCPII .380, despite really wanting to carry therm. I have since gone to the S&W 637 as my EDC, and I'm very happy with it and extremely confident in it, especially with the installed Crimson Trace laser grips.

      I CARRY A 640 because I don't trust the 38 .The MARINES kicked the 38 to the curb for not putting the CHINESE DOWN DURING THE KOREAN WAR. So if the MARINES won't use it I have no use for it.357.or 9mm 45ACP. In the waistband period no doubt. In a GUNFIGHT you can't have enough ammunition I know that 4 sure. on early sat morning, 4:30 am, I was woken up to gun fire. Two idiots leaving a party in my building, started shooting at each other in my parking lot. Not a happy sound to wake up to. I dont own my own gun, and after this weekend, I don't want to EVER feel vulnerable and afraid. I am buying my own, I will learn how to shoot it and I just want to find the best, to carry, to shoot and most versatile. I live in Maine, we have the conceal carry law, every person can conceal carry here. But these punks shooting in my driveway, were carrying illegal guns, and well, I guess from what the cops said, good that they did not know how to shoot. No one was hurt, but our cars filled with holes. I am just searching now for a proper carry gun which to buy, and then I will be taking lessons to learn. so I am not the stupid person who did not know how to shoot, but I will never be put in the position where I was afraid and I had no way to protect my family So yes, I am very happy I live in this country .... Its not the smart and responsible people who shoot and kill innocent ppl, its the idiots wanna be gangsters and just plain fuktards who shoot up say my apt. building and parking lot, outside my bedroom window, I did not know if these gun shooters were going to try to come into my home. YOU do not know how that feels until you go through it, and now, its time to own my own gun.

As for doing a trigger job, I'd be very careful and perhaps want it done ONLY at the S&W factory (I think they do this). If you're ever involved in an incident where you fire, some enterprising prosecutor may make a big deal of what was done. First time I have watched one of your videos and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I don't usually comment too often but after watching the entire 27 minute video I felt I had to. I am a retired Port Authority NY/NJ Police Sgt. Worked 1980-2003. Out of the academy we carried a S&W Model 10-2 4" Bull Barrel.38, I loved that gun and it was an incredible reliable service weapon. Upon graduating the academy at the age of 21 I bought a S&W model 60 Chief Special. I had the hammer cut and polished and had the front fixed sight notched and some sort of orange plastic material fit into it. I carry that weapon still to this day. It was my off duty, undercover, second on duty backup and everything gun. I have always said that these handguns are the ultimate, best, so comfortable to carry you forget you have it handguns ever. I had a custom IWB holster made for it, with the belt clip up high so the gun sat inside the pants down low. Just recently the holster was no longer usable and fell apart. I tried to have it duplicated with no luck. I too am a person that doesn't like change, so I really miss that holster. Can't find another like it. Anyway, I just felt a special connection to you guys and this video. So much so that I am going to track down a S&W 637 Wyatt Deep Cover and buy one because you can never have too many snub nose .38's. Thank you for a trip down memory lane just because of a handgun that I have been carrying for 37 years.

    I was a cop in Phila for 22 yrs and carried the S&W Model 10 in uniform and the Chief's Special in plainclothes. At 5'7", 150 lbs, I had a problem concealing the Snubby in summer, when wearing say, shorts and T-shirt. So I went to the Beretta Bobcat .25. Now retired, I carry a Ruger LCP in summer, and the Ruger SP 101 .357 when I'm wearing enough clothing to conceal a larger gun. I'd love to carry a 15-shot handgun at all times, but let's be honest here, if the gun's size, weight, and bulk prevent me from carrying, what good is its capacity?

  • @knifedance2402

    Or…an LCR in .327 Federal Magnum. Extra round of capacity, more power, can carry with .32 H&R, (comparable in power to .38 special) or full-house .327 (comparable to .357, but with far less recoil).

Any longer distances, I only need 1 shot from my S&W model 29, w/6" barrel. I can knock over 1-liter oil cans all day at 100 meters. Now I am retired and sold everything. I prefer peace and quiet now.

    I've wanted a snub nose for a while now and it was down to this and the LCR. While I will say that I like the LCR's trigger a little better, for some reason this Deep Cover seems to handle recoil much better even though it only weights 1/2 an ounce more. I LOVE the fact that I don't need a holster as well. I know a lot of people knock revolvers in favor of higher capacity semi-auto's, but for me, the simple fact of the matter is that my G26 sat in the safe because I hated how fat it was....the S&W Deep Cover is now my daily carry along with the Ruger LC9s. Carry what you WILL carry, not what you "think" you'd like to carry...found that out the expensive way.

    Being restricted with regard to the number and use of firearms that I could own I developed an interest in actual differences between efficiency and market hype.
    The main problem that I have discerned is that most handgun rounds is that projectiles are designed to expand at certain velocities which are not easy to obtain in a 2" barrel.
    One of the methods that I have used is to use a fast burning, shotgun, propellant which has produced really good results on the range but......
    XTP 125gr at 1100 at 3yrds produces a through and through at 20 yards when going heart lung.
    For self defence I would suggest the old belt buckle target and go for the bone/pelvic girdle sight picture as I am totally convinved that unless you hit the vital triangle (brain stem) there is no hand gun which will drop an attacker within 20 yards, and very few rifles.
    I carried a 38spl loaded with < 128gr at high velocity rounds but as always shot placement is always the most important aspect.
    As always the the best way to avoid getting hurt in a fight, gun or otherwise, is don't be there.
    I have never felt under gunned with a 5 shot 38spl

    The one I like the best straight out of the box is a Taurus! yes, I said it! a Taurus!
    The 357 magnum Poly protector or 38 Spec +P. Poly protector. The weight is great and the grip size and "Vibram styled" grip handles even the 357 magnum just fine!
    I have been very pleased after shooting a box of 50 rounds with the 357 mag Poly Protector. I like the option of SA, and the hammer is in such a position that it does not get in the way at all. For the price and even the look and style, i see it as a very well done pistol for conceal carry. 5 rounds of 357 magnum will do very well, And if you prefer 38 spec, you could load it with that as well. With the 357 at least you have the choice of 357 or 38.

But the best concealed carry is the gun that you have the best shot placement and that you feel comfortable shooting and carrying. Any good trainer will tell you that. Just because some one tells you that's the best gun for carry, don't always go with that. even though a revolver is my first choice but i have fired 1000s of rounds from it. you need to go with what you shoot the best. I have to say I agreed with nearly everything you guys put forth on this vid. I went through so many "carry" guns for EDC before coming back to my old tried and true J frame I lost count. The latest and greatest sub 9's, the micro 380's...feh. The good old Smith J frame's been getting the job done for almost 70 years, packs plenty of wallop downrange, won't fail to feed with a weak load, is lightweight, and small enough to carry everywhere all day. Referencing the LCR comments, I've had them. They're bigger than the J frame, and, while having a lighter trigger pull from the factory, don't have the smoothness and reliability of the Smith trigger. The LCR can be easily short-stroked and skip a chamber during rapid fire. Never had the problem with the Smith. And, in the case of the 442/642 platform (sorry, Rich! I like less possibility of junk getting in the works), the high grip you can take on the gun really lets it settle in the hand during recoil.

    "Let's try to stay out of situations where you need that many rounds." I got a better idea: let's try to stay out of situations where we need a gun. If we fail to do that through no fault of our own, we may find ourselves in need of more than five rounds. "If you can't hit 'em with one, you need practice." People who say that don't have a clue how difficult it is to hit a rapidly moving target who is trying to kill you.

Federal achieves plus p velocities by seating the huge hollow point deep in the case .. this builds up plus p velocities without adding more powder the result is a 38 special bullet that expands and reaches 13 in denim covered ballistic gel.. out of a 2 inch barrel.. with extremely low recoil like shooting a 22 magnum

    I respectfully disagree with a revolver as the best CC choice. Quickly and effectively drawing a weapon form waistband, shoulder, ankle or any other method of concealed carry requires an obvious and unnatural movement that requires significant practice to perform efficiently and effectively, and which can “telegraph” your intention to a potential threat. IMHO the ability to casually and naturally place your hand on your weapon, in advance and undetected, is an extremely important advantage that can't be overestimated. Front pocket carry is the method that best provides this option. Practice time being equal, deep conceal front pocket carry results in the ability to more quickly, easily, casually and effectively present a weapon and maintain the advantage of surprise. Considering size (including thickness), weight, concealability, capacity, reloading speed, recoil and effective stopping power a small 9mm pistol betters or comes very close to a .38 revolver in almost every category while much better allowing the additional and very important front pocket carry option. And options are always better. Simply keep your finger off the trigger until the weapon is effectively deployed and firing in self-defense is your only remaining option. Use a good pocket holster. And don’t put anything else in the pocket with your weapon except your hand.

    My daily carry Smith's 342 airlite TI....38 spec (titanium cylinder 11 oz unloaded!!). It's just like the centennial 642 only with a titanium cylinder which makes it 11 oz instead of 15.. the d a o trigger is very smooth and not heavy at all.. I installed full size rubber hogue monogrips covers the back strap cushions my hand against recoil and I can get all my fingers on the gun from maximum control yet have no problem carrying it in my right front jeans pocket in a DeSantis Nemesis holster

    Agree 100%. S&W J-frame is the BEST concealed carry gun EVER. I like the old FBI load of 38 Special +P 158 gr LSWC-HP. Superb round, especially the Remington version. Seems many folks overlook what a highly effective round the 38 Special actually is, when the round is loaded with a good bullet design. It was Agent Mireles firing a S&W 686 loaded with 38 Spl +P 158gr LSWC-HP who ended the infamous FBI Miami shootout in 1986. The only 38 Special hits on the bad guys that day were the hits that stopped and dropped them! The "old school" 38 Special succeeded when the 9mm ammo failed miserably that day.

    Rich, great show. From the demonstrations I've seen, a .380 FMJ is less powerful than a FMJ 9mm, but the hollow point will put a lot of hurt of someone and they won't be able to tell the difference between it and a 9mm hollow point. Most likely you're not going to use a .380 for shooting assailants at 100 feet, but rather less than 12 feet. I have no problem carrying a .380 loaded with hollow points.

      I shoot and carry a Taurus Poly Protector .357 and a Ruger LCR 357. I try to shoot 50-100 rounds a week at the local range with both. While they do kick and buck a little, it is tolerable. If you carry them, then be committed to practice with them.

    • @SierraBravo347
      @SierraBravo347 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@gutbucket260 I carry a Taurus 605. The grip is really great, fits my hand good for a small frame. I usually dump 100 rounds every time I go to the range. I Certainly Agree with you, SHOOT what you're going to Carry and if it's a DA/SA, act like it Doesn't have a hammer. I shoot Double Action only with it. 👍

I'm from the UK and i'm interested in hearing the argument for allowing guns to be carried or at least be owned. This is because the media constantly talks about the negatives of guns and very rarely the positives of being armed and protected. Would just like to hear your opinion. Thanks.

    For capacity, I recall the story of the young mother who was a victim of a home invasion. She took her 6-shooter with her and her infant child into the bathroom and hid in the closet. When the assailant came at her, she unloaded on the guy, hitting him in the face, neck, and chest with 5 of the 6 rounds at point blank range. The guy stopped his attack, went downstairs and out the door and drove away. So, 5 rounds wasn't enough to put the man down. And she wasn't using a .22LR gun.

Love the gun feel that it is every bit as trustworthy as the Smith and wesson at half the cost however that's not to say the wyatt deep cover package isn't worth the extra bucks. I love the concept behind this gun, the only thing that makes me want a standard version of this is that i want a single action option, bobbing the hammer is good but what about a different snag free hammer design that can still be pulled back by my thumb, maybe a skeleton commander style hammer thats a little stubbier so it wont snag, i just hate double action, so for now ill carry my glock 26, and maybe pick up a single stack 9mm as well

    • @GunsmokeGunsTV
      @GunsmokeGunsTV  10 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      cgr88m with a revolver you should only use double action for self defense. The single action takes to long in an emergency and creates some serious safety concerns. That being said if that is what you realy want we can make it that way S&W will not.

    • @cgr88m
      @cgr88m 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Gunsmoke Guns TV i am aware that in a self defense scenario single action isn't safe , i guess i should be more specific its my fault, my thing is i just dont like hammerless revolvers or bobbed hammers, i know why you guys designed it this way and like i said i love the concept it truly is the best ccw revolver and i might actually pick one up for my fiancé, i saw how much tom from weapons education likes it for his wife and my fiancé feels unsafe around my glock due to it not having a safety. Me myself i just like semi auto's but for me to buy one it have to be a traditional sa/da or a sa only. Thanks for the quick reply and you have earned my highest respects by telling me that you would build it how i want it even though you advised against it, love that in a company, you may not agree with your customer but you still want to make them happy, now thats how businesses should work. Greetings from Texas.

      Gunsmoke Guns TV most training courses will steer you away from a five shot .38 Special revolver. With a 9 mm Kahr PM9 loaded with 124 grain +P ammunition is easier to carry concealed with better accuracy and using a spare seven round magazine is far superior to your revolver.
      This is all smoke and mirrors to make money!
