So why hasn't TR noticed this? He notices pretty much everything else in his work. JD does in AATCHB video, in the chorus of Piggy, a rhythm which is extraordinary. I am a drummer and I know teachers as well...none can do it. I've tried different avenues to attack this thythm and can just about get away with it but the flow is not there. And this is without the bass drum, which is quite simple. Any drummer who can advise wins the prize of a billion pounds.
Ilan Rubin is a lovely chap. But he is not the best NIN drummer. His cymbals are far too big and create masses of "wash" because of this. And in a band like NIN, with so many different parts competing, wash is an issue. Josh Freese is the best NIN drummer by far...but I prefer Jerome Dillon. He is the NIN sound. That's actually factual!
The problem is that Illan is a very loose drummer. He probably had jazz training in his past. Which doesn't compliment NIN's very precise "robotic" sound. Both Jerome and Josh are very tight and precise drummers, which works much better with a click track and sequenced synths etc.
