Godwyns death was the cause of the shattering, hence him being alive before it. In Marika’s emotional state after godwyn was killed, shattered the elden ring.

Actually there is a reason how. They were all invisible and ganked him when he had no armor or gear. No armor or gear-based off pictures and the cinematic trailer. Invisible-cause the steel torch that reveals them was produced after his death to counter their invisibility based off item description.
As a wielder of red lightning, I respect that Godwyn action. I also Respect that Game of Thrones action at the end there. All kinds of Good action here. "All Gold Err Thang" XD

Godwyn being an immortal demigod who defeated the ancient dragons and even befriended them would have little reason to suspect an assassin could fell him, especially since he wasn’t aware of their blades carrying the power of death as Maliketh safeguarded that rune. It was the only time he couldn’t afford being caught off guard but also had nothing to warn him of the trouble ahead. Still, he was most likely assassinated since assassins generally don’t choose to give their target the opportunity to defend themselves if they can.
It’s kind of nice to know that I’m not the only character who gets stabbed in the back in that game. I wish they had a couple npcs who died from gravity too.
