While playing this game I feel like sitting by a warm hearth. Don’t know why, but the “oldschoolness” and overall vibe and, of course, Obsidian’s writing gives me such a warm feel. I play this game once a year and it never fails to entertain. Between recent RPG releases, The Outer Worlds and KCD scratched an itch, no other RPGs recently could. Of Course there’s is RPG godness in BG3, but even in CRPGs I prefer PoE for overall vibe. Gameplaywise BG3 rules. But these are my tastes anyway :)Happy New Year!
It's a solid game in a genre with some of the best games of all time. If you're looking for Mass Effect or Fallout: NV greatness, that's not here but you will like it.
it was a spirited attempt at releasing a new IP, but marketing it as "from the people who made New Vegas" ended up becoming its albatross. It had a strong start, but by the end, i was pretty thoroughly done with the game after my first playthrough, not at all eager for a second playthrough for the alternate ending. For me, it was the "humor" never really landing and every joked seemed like it ended with "the Aristocrats", except replacing "Aristocrats" with "Capitalism." Making each joke feel less like "Oh those wacky capitalists!" and more like "yep, thats what the world is spiraling towards, thanks for reminding me of the world i'm trying to escape from." The gunplay was fine, i guess, i don't really play shooters so i can't really tell you much about it. only that i started as a "cool" sniper, and ended it as a minigun toting psychopath who was tired of everyones stupid problems. The final straw was completing a story quest in the last area before Tartarus where i completed the mission, the "Traitor" who i sided with (but who was functionally coded as a member of a faction i just spited) started attacking me after i just did what she wanted, so i engaged in self defence, on her, everyone in the room, and everyone on that planet, and everyone i saw on Tatarus, friendlies included. I also kicked all my companions off the ship, realizing that i didn't like any of them, and the game not seeming to suffer from the fact that i was functionally soloing a game where it seemed like it wanted me to bring some tag-alongs. I would say my initial impression had me at an 8/10, but as i made my way through the game, is gradually shifted to 6 or maybe a 5/10. With 5 being "average."
You know, I once saw my husband playing this game. I don't know why but, while he was in a dialogue with a character, I got a certain vibe of "Oh dear...." from it like when Casualty (a medical drama here) changed from a live camera (as if you were watching it through a window) to a recorded camera (it's 100% in a studio) which ultimately marked the death of the plot writing. Like, sure, it's playable, but I imagine it's not great. But even if the game is forgotten and unloved, we did at least get a banger of a song from The Stupendium. So, you know, silver lining. :P
Most people that I've met who didn't enjoy the outer worlds were people who didn't want to actively interact with it. They skipped all the dialogue, didn't read any of the terminals/notes, had little to no idea what was going on in the story, and primarily just bealined the main story not really doing any of the side quests. They wanted to play the game passively, turn their brain off and just explore and kill stuff like in skyrim and fallout 4. But obsidian games are very much built on reciprocal storytelling, they expect you to engage in the game to get the true and full experience
i like outer worlds on release but it still felt like it was missing something, replayed it this year with the 2 dlc and it was even better like it benefitted from them to feel more complete in terms of overall story and the time it took to play
I started the game and when i was introduced to the plot, decided my character's goal would be to save the crew of his ship no matter the cost. I didnt see the point in making giant corporations my enemy and thought they had the resources to rescue the crew, so i made my way to the capital city turned in the hippie scientist. They then said they needed one more favor and they would owe me. I assassinated the person they asked me to and the ceo said for me to name what i wanted. The options were a house, money, or a ship upgrade i think. I was so mad i couldnt even ask for them to go pickup my crew, and after about 2 missions shut off the game.
I never understood the hype behind this game, Jim Sterling praising it as the best thing since sliced bread lol I can only assume that's due to the Bethesda bad sentiment that was going around at that time.. The truth is the outer worlds was bang average, it was so boring at times it was even hard to finish.
I understand why some people in the comments said they get bored of playing this game. It's quite slow paced overall and the writing and voice acting may get a little dull sometimes, but I don't have too much of a problem with games like that.
I love the implications of this game. Like, it's okay. It's goofy and you can't look particularly cool or do anything particularly cool but you know this is the most tepid The Outer Worlds will ever be. And it sure is nicely designed aestheticly (even if it is 88% bioshock). I think the sequel will be a real treat and this one's 'more than okay'.
Bro!! you would not believe but i recently started playing this game and i searched for the 'WORST DIECISIONS' to make in the game and your video popped up. Im really enjoying the game and looking forward to playing upcoming part 2.
I think they failed to realize the reason New Vegas was so massively popular for so long after it's release. Mods. Giving the players the full creation kit to make anything and everything for the game. I knew going in that I didn't like the art style of most of the game. But I bought it anyway expecting Fallout levels of modding capability down the road. And it never came. And I never bothered with the game. That still hurts to say
I bought it for cheap and the dlc was on sale I thought it was a really fun game because you as the player have to make it fun and having a small glitch every once in a while where a mechsuit gets launched 50 feet up in the air makes it so much more fun and interesting
I just know if they made the game with the ability to romance some, doesnt even have to be all, the characters - then this would have done absolute numbers on tumblr at the time and would’ve been a beloved classic
I started the game, loved the first few hours but then it got boring real quick. Few years later I started it again and after some hours I felt the same and couldn’t finish it.
outer worlds would be a 9/10 if it were made by an indie, small time team. having Obsidian's pedigree in it, the game could've been so, so much more, soi feel that a lot of the player's frustration is because of that. lets hope OW2 really is the new vegas in space we were waiting for. that being said, i absolutely love this game.
I remember playing this game when it came out on Switch. I enjoyed it a lot, especially the tone. My favorite videogame series is Fable, so that silly and sardonic writing was right up my ally. But I messed up a bit too much and ended up becoming a murder hobo. Which ended up losing me Parvati because she was mad when her girlfriend ATTACKED ME and I defended myself. But I ended up liking Ellie the best. I was thinking about going back to it with the announcement of the second game, and this basically is reigniting that itch.
I spent time playing Outer Worlds on my switch during a 7 month deployment. I think it's a good game, but I kept having a "something is missing" type of feeling.
This game is the definition of 'meh'. It's not offensively bad or good in anyway could be memorable, it's just a time sink. I mean, it could be alright for some people, but idk, for all that it was hyped to be, it was just disappointing.
I'm sure I'm not the only one thinking that this game is well written. I didn't finidh it because it is lacking on the gameplay department, but the only thing that kept me for awhile were the dialogues. Obsidian might not be at its peak, but they definitly have it in their DNA.
Never did finish it. Played a dashing space knight. So, leadership alongside science melee weapons. That means the prismatic hammer. Which also means that combat broke down hard as my power attack squashed everything, even after turning to max difficulty. Good times, but not enough to keep me around.
The only entertainment i found in this game is in the DLC, The main story is so bad that you could just unalive everyone in the city and they would still let you join their side.
I only recently tried it for the first time.. So my dislike for it is brand new! To be clear, it looked very average to me from the start, which was why it remained on my wishlist through several dozen deep discounts. Even with low expectations, I was still disappointed
Didn't really cared for this game. Like the art style but the companions didn't have true depth, the main plot was nothing special, factions were boring and were not as advertised, no third person ( the point of having armor if you can't see it?). After leaving the first world and doing Parvatis quest I lost interest. The whole forcing the player to care about her lesbian relationship quest and having to travel all over for items let me know what sort of game this was and just went back to Skyrim lol. If I ever give this game another shot (and the chances are very slim) I will definitely do a lone wolf run.
@fracturedworldhistory The quest wasn't that "forced". If it was forced, it would have made Junlei or Parvati essential and not allowed you to make changes to their existence. Since it's an rpg, I had the options to a. Not introduce the characters. B. Fire/kill Parvati when she became a lesbian. Or C. Remove Junlei from the equation all together. In one of my playthroughs, working as a board agent, I just rid the groundbreaker of Junlei before bringing Parvati aboard and skipped the whole lesbian drama. I could've let it play out a bit and killed Junlei, pissing off Parvati and dealing with the consequences of her leaving or intimidating her to stay, but wasn't feeling that sickish. As an rpg you don't have to let a quest railroad you thus feeling forced. This isn't starfield.
I characterized this game as more “meh” ESPECIALLY as I absolutely love Fallout New Vegas. This is not even close a spiritual offspring to New Vegas. I honestly was disappointed and REALLY wanted more breadth and depth. New Vegas was so versatile and so many paths to choose that one not seen such in others. I’m really considering outer worlds 2 but I’m going to wait and see how the reviews go.
I love the outer worlds. I think most people expected too much from it. I just started playing it again a few days ago for the first time since launch and I'm really enjoying it
As an rpg lover, I've seriously considered playing this several times. Then i look into it, and even though everything I've seen visually should be right up my alley, it just looks particularly bad to me. I don't need superb graphics, and I enjoy a wide range of visual styles. Seeing the open world in Outer Worlds looks cramped, uninteresting, and with strange colors. That alongside reviews seeming generally neutral or negative, i never end up pulling the trigger on this one.
I've played through this 5 times. I love this game. Would I want to go back? No, because i know the game already. Same thing I can't replay fallout 3 or 4 anymore. I just know it. I'm very hyped for Outer Worlds 2. It's worth the $40-$50 price range.
In one of the missions, I was fighting enemy with allies, and one of my stray bullets accidentally hit one of the allies, and immediately I became the biggest villain in the universe, and all friends suddenly forgot about the enemy, and made taking me out their number 1 priority. I could’ve reloaded the save, but I can’t stand dumb games like this
I had a lot of fun with this game back then. Oh the second playthrough my character was as dumb as bread. It's hillarious that he was not able to unterstand some concepts and how the answer choices changed because of that, and how the companions reacted.
I couldn't force myself to make it past the initial meeting with Parvati. Everything in this world is based on the assumptions of millennial anti-corporate hipsters and I hated everything about it. Even going a pure-violence route and skipping all dialogue didn't satisfy. When I heard Tim Cain on his channel say that every companion was initially written as LGBT, I was not the least bit surprised. That heavily political side of gaming culture is all over the art style and story of this game, and I just can't be bothered.
Judging by your own words (I have never played Outer Worlds), Obsidian actually committed both to character flaws and to builds in general. It is up to the player to choose the difficulty to make builds and skills make sense. Which is as it should be: on easier difficulties a player learns and understands nothing; to get to the game mechanics, one of harder difficulties should be played. Do you understand this yourself? Also, it is kind of strange for a game “reviewer” to never play on survival difficulty. Do you want to become a game journalist?
I like Outer Worlds but it feels too short. I'm not saying it is too short. I t just feels too short. By the time the game actually seems to let you loose, there just isn't that much game left. The DLC definitely gave some extra space, but it still feels short. The Bethesda games that really set the tone for the genre, Skyrim and Fallout, give you complete freedom to spend time getting your character set before you exhaust too much content, and Obsidian's other games, like POE, let your character loose into their role early on. In Outer Worlds, it feels like the qame until the ship crash on Monarch is all build up, but by then it's damn near end game and there's just not a ton left to do with your set character.
I really enjoyed my time with the game, and I agree on the skill checks. really hope they fix that in the sequel. but my biggest problem with it is that it seems like just about every conflict/quest has three solutions: side with this person, side with that person, or find a compromise. new vegas is so great because just about every quest is all grey area. very little "oh this is definitely the best option". it all comes down to what YOU think is the best solution. so I hope they improve on that too
Only worth for challenge runs, and even the engine is starting to show its age. Tried recording an all-guns build and that got badly corrupted as ALL my gun were reset to base damage instead of the thousands of bits I invested into boosting them!
I liked it enough to finish it and hope that it would get a second iteration that had more character and a little more depth. I just want to see games like this do well enough to keep multiple IP's on the investment boards.
Outer Worlds 2 got a trailer. I don't think it had gameplay in it but the first 30 seconds of the 2 minute video is "From the people who made this game" and they said "Fallout 3, Pt 2". They have way too much cheezy millennial-z humor
I went in with an open mind and not expecting a New Vegas experience. It's still a good game, one of my qualms is that without the DLCs it's laughably short. No radiant quests, so even if you have the spacer's choice edition if you clear all quests you just farm little nuggets of XP by roaming around killing marauders and creatures and that gets boring. Don't think there is New Game+, but I haven't beaten it yet so I did skip parts of this video so I didn't get spoiled. Also the longevity of New Vegas, Fallout 4, and Skyrim were due to mod communities and this game does not have such a thing, which would have been amazing. The quirkiness reminds me a lot of Saints Row, where almost all of Halcyon is charmingly incompetent or out for themselves. There's also that retro futuristic charm from the Fallout games with the corporations and the propaganda all over the place. Playing a kill-them-all madman shortens the playtime by a lot, where a pacifist or negotiator adds to the run time with all the running around you'll do. Companion quests could be longer. And the lack of over arching factions aside from Phineas and the Board does make some forgettable. Though I think the Sublight contractors are the only faction that has a presence beyond Monarch at least. Side quests to me had that New Vegas charm, where there's a twist near or at the end. Like the snobby woman in Byzentium who insists on early retirement, and you learn what early retirement is and decide her fate. Or the guy in the Iconoclast bar that sends you on an errand only to find out he outright lied to your face. Where Starfield, they play everything straight and most NPCs are forgettable as a result. There are a couple planets that are locked when completing everything, though one is a gas giant and the other is an ice asteroid for world building.
Like many, I'm sure, "Fallout: New Vegas" is among my favorite games. The marketing blitz for this game specifically targeted people such as myself. I played through it and was, frankly, disappointed. It was just so shallow. And perhaps the greatest disappointment was the relative lack of contextual story telling, which truly elevated NV. Anyway, it was ... fine. I did not care for the leveling system, whatsoever. No matter what, your character would end up overpowered by the end-game. I had no interest in the DLC nor are my expectations for this sequel particularly high.
As a casual gamer i very much enjoy this game, i actually just got it because it was on sale on PlayStation store... Its a fun enough chill game to come home after a rough day at work and play and relax... I've always been a casual gamer though, i play to have fun and for therapy not to be the best.
For me, it was the "humor" never really landing and every joked seemed like it ended with "the Aristocrats", except replacing "Aristocrats" with "Capitalism." Making each joke feel less like "Oh those wacky capitalists!" and more like "yep, thats what the world is spiraling towards, thanks for reminding me of the world i'm trying to escape from."
The gunplay was fine, i guess, i don't really play shooters so i can't really tell you much about it. only that i started as a "cool" sniper, and ended it as a minigun toting psychopath who was tired of everyones stupid problems.
I started this 2 days ago and I'm in love, it's such a classic game style, like a ps3 gem or Kingdoms of Amalur in Dpace
That was a great game when I played it back in the day!
The doctor injected the medicine into the patient's main artery... 😂
Its the game that fails to engage the player.. Not the other way around..
You leave Parvati alone! Let us have our asexual lesbian romance. It's literally the only one in gamging as far as I know
Epic gave away spacer's choice edition last year for free so nabbed it while I could, just started playing it a few days ago🙂
Was the best demo I ever played. But it was too limited to be a ‘full’ game.
It was a smaller budget passion project more than anything. The sequel is getting the resources and time to be an actual AAA title
i like outer worlds on release but it still felt like it was missing something, replayed it this year with the 2 dlc and it was even better like it benefitted from them to feel more complete in terms of overall story and the time it took to play
I think you get a buff in exchange for the debuff that comes with the flaws
I really liked the base game, the DLC elevates the experience for me. Worth picking up
I started the game and when i was introduced to the plot, decided my character's goal would be to save the crew of his ship no matter the cost.
Of course he of all people would love it.
I understand why some people in the comments said they get bored of playing this game. It's quite slow paced overall and the writing and voice acting may get a little dull sometimes, but I don't have too much of a problem with games like that.
The sequel will almost certainly make up for the shortcomings that the first one has
I love the implications of this game.
I kind of thought the game was underwhelming. Nothing good, nothing bad. Just nothing to draw me in and keep me playing
I've never seen your channel before... you sound like Yes Man from FNV. Good video lol
Is the spacers choice version safe to buy now or stick with the original?
Yes the spacers choice is great! Granted I played it for "free" on ps plus. But when I played the regular one on my switch it was pretty bad
Just finished replaying this yesterday, still a great game.
edit: There is an idle camera where you can see your character when idle for a bit.
20:35 I didn't remember Vicar Max being so short, much less Parvati being so tall. What happened here?
Claims that the game is worth the play, proceeds to list the flaws and reasons why the game is not in fact, worth it
Bro!! you would not believe but i recently started playing this game and i searched for the 'WORST DIECISIONS' to make in the game and your video popped up.
This is one of the games that helped me make it thru the pandemic
I've never felt compelled to do much after a few hours in.
Which version is better, the original or next gen upgrade version?
Big dan playing the evil playthtoughs so I don't have to is peak.
This game was way overhyped and it lacks any real charm outside of the first planet.
This game is what confirmed to me that Obsidian was no more.. The sale to Microsoft should have been final confirmation for everyone else
so weird seeing the wave of hate for this game in the last 1-2 years. i remember folks highly praising this game on release. i’m not sure what changed
I only recently tried it for the first time.. So my dislike for it is brand new! To be clear, it looked very average to me from the start, which was why it remained on my wishlist through several dozen deep discounts. Even with low expectations, I was still disappointed
7.5 out 10.But as Skillup said :"In the modern game climate, there's no room for decent." Would be a 8 but to little of ADA
This summed up my experience. I really stop caring after the forced romance quest
Without even seeing the video the answer is yes I recently started playing again on hard mode
I just got done re-playing this game and now I see a new Dan video on it lol
A Hidden Gem that needs some serious mod support...on console and pc
I characterized this game as more “meh” ESPECIALLY as I absolutely love Fallout New Vegas. This is not even close a spiritual offspring to New Vegas.
I honestly was disappointed and REALLY wanted more breadth and depth. New Vegas was so versatile and so many paths to choose that one not seen such in others.
I’m really considering outer worlds 2 but I’m going to wait and see how the reviews go.
Or it could just remain hidden 🤣
It did one thing really well: I'll never buy am obsidian game on release again.
I could’ve reloaded the save, but I can’t stand dumb games like this
FYI it’s free on ps plus at the moment - including the dlc
I made it maybe 4 hours in and thought, "wtf am I playing?" Put it down, never touched it again
I've heard the game described as "aggressively average".
I like the outer worlds way more than I liked starfield
The Outer Worlds is truly content of some kind.
It feels too short and the endings feels just unsatisfying...... but its alright imma play through it again
I think a lot of us were upset or we couldn't romance Parvati,
I tride to play it. Fell asleep every time
If done right you can sort of play both sides until almost late game although you have to choose a side on the dlc missions
I had it when it first came out. I completed it one time but couldn't do another play through.
Parvati is Panam at home
For me it's a very good game. It has its bugs and flaws of course, but it gives me a lot of fun
What are it's player counts on Xbox via GamePass??
Found a copy this past summer at a yard sale! $2 a brand new one still mip! Hopefully it will help me get through the remaining winter! 😂
The DLC is a pretty good time as well
I went in with an open mind and not expecting a New Vegas experience.
Just beat it again cause I when I beat it the first time it was before the DLC. It is a solid game. I know a lot people didn’t like it but I did.
I tried it twice, but I couldn't push myself to finish it.
As a casual gamer i very much enjoy this game, i actually just got it because it was on sale on PlayStation store... Its a fun enough chill game to come home after a rough day at work and play and relax... I've always been a casual gamer though, i play to have fun and for therapy not to be the best. I play fallout games just to explore and shoot shit, GTA games to explore and shoot shit, NMS to explore and shoot shit etc.... Outer Worlds is perfect for ppl like me
