Tarka is a 1973 Albin Vega 27 (8.2m) that I bought sight-unseen and without sailing experience on the island of St. Martin in April of 2017. I was thrust head-first into ocean sailing as I got Tarka safely south from what would become the most devastating hurricane seasons on record. We are now working our way west towards the Pacific.

Sailing tarka, gone but not forgotten.
Had a lot of dogs over the decades. The first puppy I got I named Tarka. She was German Sheppard mix with a black face. We'd take her sailing on an Islander 36 in San Diego. She sailed up to Avalon Bay a few times. She was a salty dog.

Really enjoyed your vid. Nice to see someone keeping it real in a small boat. I'm a full time yacht crew myself and it's easy to forget just how capable a small boat can be (in the right hands). I met a guy who had just completed a Atlantic passage in a similar size boat to yours and got caught in the tail end of hurricane he was getting 70 plus knots of wind. He said everything was fine the boat wasn't taking water and he was doing 10 knots under bare pole in the right direction and he just rode it! Good luck to the two of you!!

I stumbled on your video of a small little boat taking on the unforgiving big blue ocean. My wife said you are super brave and courageous. We decided to watch from the beginning and loving it. The last time I saw an Albin Vega was in Sweden in the late 1970’s. Awesome boat, thanks to keeping it alive.

Greetings from a fellow Tarka owner. My Tarka (2) was a Joubert 34. I sailed her around the Queensland coast and Coral Sea. Rolled steel construction. Loved the boat. Fair winds.
This is amazing! Basically this is my dream, to get on a sailboat & explore the world and to see things and meet interesting people!
I've got a Vega too. Great little boats, not the fastest, or the best at anything, but solid. I was driving mine through 1.5 inches of ice just last week - not a scratch! You probably know that quite a few have circumnavigated (7 or 8 are known to have, and there are stories of more), and one load of Norwegian lads still hold the record (unless it's been quietly broken in the past 2 years) for the furthest north in a yacht, right into the arctic ice. They go by the name Berserk and have some good vids on TH-cam. Just putting this comment to encourage youngsters to go out and enjoy life on a shoestring and to say well done and good luck! :)

Thanks for sharing your adventure! I noticed you still had the labels on your soup cans, and I'm sure you know, but it's a serious safety hazard because a wet label will gladly clog your bilge pump and possibly lead to major problems. Try to reduce the amount of paper aboard always:)
You're definitely right, and it's rare for us to bring cardboard or paper onboard. A few of the cans still had their labels at the time, but none of them do anymore, and we always remove them when adding new cans to the boat.

Quite right...I’ve done a “Tarka” and sailed about 20,000 nautical miles in our world adventure. Great videos, well done both of you, you are the sort of people the world lacks, and needs. By the way, after I removed all the labels on our tins, I did of course write on them what was inside...but forgot to use a waterproof marker...every meal became an adventure into the unknown. Go well “Tarka”.
@@zagman51 lol, I did the same thing by accident but it was my wife's fault lol. I don't know how but she managed to find the the only dry erase Sharpie marker in a 2000 mile radius and then handed it to me lol

Sailing is a way to live to fully enjoy it. Some times it gets scary and you will have a thrill if you dont fuck up.
But you learn from it.

With how much water you have in there and how high the water got in, I would be worried about a leaking hull to deck joint.
Before you cross the Pacific you may want to add some fiberglass inside of the chain locker and a hose that will direct any water that comes in directly to the bilge, or even better yet its own bilge pump with a screen to protect the pump from any garbage that comes up on the chain.
Also a rule that I go by is that if the wind is blowing hard enough to require reefing I will keep the companionway closed. With how hard you are heeling if you had experienced a blowdown Tarka would have filled with water very quickly because there would be nothing to slow it down getting into the people tank if she laid down!

The hull to deck joint does leak a little bit, but we have a pretty good idea of how much and where, and I think a little caulking will do us OK for the time being.
You're right, it's probably a good idea for us to keep a board or two in in these kinds of conditions. I don't think we were anywhere close to a knock-down situation though. The seas weren't that large, and the winds were steady with no squalls in sight.
@@TheAdventuresofTarka on that hull to deck joint the best way to fix it is to grind down through the gel coat and just glass it over to the outside of the hull then paint her.
Unless you separate the deck from the hull and squirt the new caulking in between the two then bolt it back down, caulk on the outside more than likely will not hold. This is because the entire hull twists and bends as you are going over waves, and a bead of caulk on the outside seam will simply not have the elasticity to hold.
It would take about a week to glass that up yourself, and it will make some good video content!
If you are already getting some water in now, once you get out on the big swells of the Pacific, you will probably get 2-3 times as much because she will flex so much more out there!

Yay sailing! Looks good, easing the main will take away a lot of the healing without losing too much speed-fishermans reef- gets you out of jams pretty quick helps you stay in control. Keep on keeping' on
We were being a bit too sporty when we were taking water over the rail, but after that, we eased things up. I think the heel later on wasn't too excessive. Vegas are pretty tender unless they're healing about 15 degrees or more.

When utilizing reef points to help secure the bundle (not always necessary) try to use something significantly weaker than the sailcloth. If anyone should release a reef pennant by accident, the sailcloth through which the reef point is run will be subjected to extraordinary stress and may be damaged. Reef points aboard a small boat are needlessly aspirational. I no longer use them. Think of your main as loose-footed when reefed.
Interesting thought. We'll think about alternatives to the double braid we're currently using. The sail is loose-footed, by the way.

This reminds me why real sailing is a young man's game. Tarka is a tough little boat as is her skipper. Guess we will see if your angel smile first mate is up for the next adventure. I think I would want to pair up with another boat if you plan anything long distance just to know someone in radio range could assist you. There are enough sv vids on here to find someone heading your way. Do a full inspection before heading out buddy. The sea can be very unforgiving. Happy trails.

This goes to show that there is no substitute for sailing experience. It helps to have some experiencd before getting in over your head like the author of this video. Great voice for the video though and good production.
I have subscribed to from episode one! I can't wait to see you sail your small boat so far! I'm cheering you on friend!! Fair seas, and following winds. Remember when times get hard that less than .01 of the world's population will and can do a circumnavigation like you plan on doing! Now that you plan on doing this on such a small vessel is what makes it interesting and unique.
We definitely suffer a bit more both on passage and on anchor, owing to the small size of the boat, which I do think sets the story apart from the masses. I don't know if it makes it more interesting or not, but it does go to show that you don't need a big boat and lots of money to go places!
pro tip, remove labels from cans and write what it is in marker so when they get wet they don't do that. and you don't get those labels sloshing around in the bilge or making mold. Just found your channel and subbed cause I like it :)

On the roads and paths because the flora and fauna is brutal with many things which will scratch and cut you. The diving is great and this island has an ancient fort. Too.

Do you know the chalk trick to find leaks? Draw a chalk line or two all around the interior of the hulll and where rivulets of water are running into your bilges they will wash away the chalk.
Don't you have an automatic bilge pump? Just head into the wind for a few minutes to get her back on her feet (verticalish) and pump out your bilges.

Interesting trick! We do have an automatic bilge pump, but the pump itself is situated pretty high within the keel, and won't activate until the keel fills up.
@@TheAdventuresofTarka How come you put the pump so high up? How about installing another (you can never have too many bilge pumps LOL) at the lowest part of the bilge with a float switch. On my boat I made a waterproof bulkhead between the cockpit and cabiin and another immediately after the stern tube so my engine was effectively in a watertight box. That kept all the smelly engine stuff away from the rest of the boat and saved me from sinking once when I hit a rock and ruptured the seal around my stern tube. No YT in those days or it would have made a good video LOL

I love seeing that you’re able to get to all these places on a 27’ boat..We live on a 30’ sailboat which we also bought with no sailing experience at all.. we’ve been taking short trips around the Bahamas and are planning on heading down that way next year! Bonaire is the most beautiful and unique place I’ve ever been
Thanks! That's great, it'd be nice to see some more small boats down here. It's pretty rare to see anything under 32 feet, and the vast majority of the boats are in the 40-foot range and larger.

well filmed!! that AV has original spar and most likely rigging too - close reaching/hauling puts the largest stress on the kit so keep a watchful eye, in particular chain plates too! i owned a AV many years, lovely sailboats very forgiving ! greetings from Helsingborg.
A few dollars for a box of gallon Ziploc freezer bags would have saved all those books from getting soaked. It would be a wise investment to get a box of them when you begin to restock your bookshelf. Because your can storage area is not watertight you could use heavy duty clear garbage bags as liners. Thankfully during my refit I created many water tight bulkheads and storage lockers so the only thing that gets soaked is me.
Given the time, location, and money to do a proper re-fit, I think we would also considering making a lot of our storage areas water-tight. But it is what it is. We put a lot of things in plastic bags or dry bags for this reason, but never really considered doing it with our books. We might have to re-consider!
@@TheAdventuresofTarka- unfortunately I have learned from having to throw away a lot of things. Tarka is a great little sailboat with tons of potential. At least you are learning what it needs for a refit while you enjoy sailing it. From what I can tell from your videos I think a bigger boat is in your future. One with room for a dive compressor for your sailing mate. 😄

Really enjoying your videos. You should really have your first 2 hatch boards in place when sailing in any kind of weather. You get pooped or take a rogue wave and you could be done in a matter of seconds. I cruised with my wife for 14 years and also took a small 28 ft Colombia for a 1500 nm solo cruise last year. Very similar to your boat. Just not much elevation between sea level and the bottom hatch board. Soon as a bit of chop came up in went the first hatch board, then another. Side on caution as it can happen very quickly and never be hesitant to button up completely. You should be able to secure your slider from both in the cockpit and from down below. Cheers

I think at the point you had fully reefed then bearing off the wind a few degrees might've smoothed the ride somewhat.
