    This is so cool... This is the same time my dad was on board and its just kinda neat to see some visual references to the things he talked about. Thanks for uploading this stuff..

    I went diving on the Oriskany about three years ago. It's now a condominium for red snapper and a long, flat deck for scallops to live. A tremendous new part of the food chain in the Gulf of Mexico. She just keeps on giving of herself.

    Frame 4:46 shows a 500 pound bomb attached to the outboard ejector rack upon landing . The plane is an A-7B Corsair II flown by VA-155 Silver Foxes. I was a member of that squadron for three Westpac cruises. We were on the line for the last airstrikes of the war along with VA-153 and VA-215. The video of the Oriskany is a treasure to those of us who sailed on her

    I was aboard Oriskany for 3 WESTPAC cruises 67-71. Radarman. She was the workhorse of Yankee Station. We had a nickname for the O Boat: USS Zippo.

      Greetings Doc, Kenneth & Abe. I roamed the flight deck loading bombs & 20mm guns on my squadron's A-4F Skyhawks (VA-192) in the April-December 1969 WESTPAC cruise in Oriskany. Did two other 8-month cruises to the Tonkin Gulf in USS Ticonderoga before that going back to Christmas Eve, 1966. Thanks, Doc for the excellent video and all the memories from 50 years ago.

      On the flip side, I was working with the Mach 2.28 F4's in 70, and they were no slouch! Great to have good memories about our own aircraft, after all, they were both quite capable, and with exceptional pilots!

      I don't know that any carrier came close to the workload that the Oriskany performed year after year during the Vietnam War!! Being at sea and doing flight ops 7 daze a week is serious business! Spelling intended!!

    Wonderful stuff! I was on the Mighty O for 3 cruises 69-71, and involved in the shooting of promo film "A Day in Westpac." Working in PAO, did the evening news on TV, and had two radio shows a day. Started a 45-year career there.

      Awesome, thank you. My uncle, Cdr. Charles David Metzler, flew an F8 with VF-194 and he was lost due to a malfunction on landing approach in the Gulf in June 1971. I just stumbled across this home movie footage, and there is a shot of him landing at the beginning of the third part.

    I served on two WestPac cruises (1970's) on the "Big O", as flight deck lighting electrician with ships company (Engineering Divistion, Electrical Shop). Also served in our ships band we formed during more relaxing times. Brings back memories. I did get a bit homesick for Oregon occassionally. And, the experience prompted me to write Americana music. I left the Navy in 1975 and later produced an a music album from which I received ASCAP royalty checks from all around the world. So grateful for that entire experience; to serve my country and to become part of something bigger than myself. Sad to hear they sunk her 28 miles off the coast of Pensacola, Florida where she became the worlds largest artificial reef (a diver's paradise I understand). Fitting memorial for a grand lady!

    The Oriskany was a 27 Charlie mod to the original Essex class. It was fitted with the angle deck. VA 153 operated the A7-A and VA 155 had the A7-B. Many memories of the ops on Yankee Station. I was there for the 1970, 71 and 72-73 cruises.

    I operated the forward bomb elevator just below the JBDs. G division red shirts 1970-72. I brought the bombs up from the 3rd deck bomb assembly to the hangar deck and then to the "Bomb Farm"...

    That's interesting to see the A7 on the Oriskany. I never knew that the A7 operated from the upgraded Essex classes. Learn something new everyday!

    • @elitewarrior0076
      @elitewarrior0076 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think the A-7 only operated from the Oriskany, the other carriers had A-4s

    • @josephstevens9888

      @@elitewarrior0076 The A-7's replaced the A-4's in the Navy light attack squadron starting in the very late 60's. Marine Corps still continued to fly the Skyhawk.

    Thanks for the production. Well done. I believe I have a shot of the Oriskany and my ship, CVA-31, together in a taskforce. It is a high obligue aerial so it is hard to tell but I think it is the Oriskany in 1970. It is at the end of my short video at 1:40.

    For you trivia buffs..... That was none other than Oprah, yes, Oprah Winfrey at the wheel of the S-2 (#303), putting it down in typical Oprah style. She had a short but illustrious career in both the S-2, later the S-3. She almost transitioned to the P-3, but opted for showbiz and retired.
