Really convenient timing for me on this one, actually. Doing a small group (book club style) watch of some 1960s anime this month on reddit, started on the 30th with Astro Boy and doing three episodes of it, Wonder 3, Sally the Witch, Golden Bat, Speed Racer, Gegege no Kitarou, Cyborg 009, Dororo to Hyakkimaru, Otoko Ippiki Gaki Daishou, Attack No.1 over the next month. So kind of crazy to have a video on that kind of period drop out of the sky at this particular moment. Very interesting point in time - I really need to dig deeper into Tezuka's history as a creator, he seems fascinating.

The fake anecdote you added really helped me understand the mindset of this era. I was tired on a drive so i was ebbing in and out of concentration, but that section was enaging and easy to follow. The other sections were interesting too of course, but the human aspect of telling a story helped it stick out to me.

32:43 slight correction here! The story is a little more complex then just “Horace cost too much.” During the production of Horace, Takahata and Miyazaki were a part of a worker’s union to help animators to unionize and be paid better by Toei. Toei then proceeded to intentionally sabotage Horace’s potential growth by barely advertising it and only letting it run in theatres for like a couple days, ensuring it wouldn’t make money so that they could then blame Takahata and Miyazaki and then demote them to work on television projects forever, and movies never again. Then after Miyazaki and Takahata worked on a few magical girl shows for Toei such as Sally the Witch and Himitsu no Akko Chan, they then voluntarily left the company.

i really enjoy listening to this since i’ve dived into the very early works as well. you provide a lot of well researched context! also this is super random, but i finally took your recommendation of the three philosophers beer. so good! doesn’t feel like 9.5% at all, thank you and have an awesome day!
p.s. i know you’re very busy now, but someday i urge you to watch ashita no joe 2 and akage no anne. they are the most boring taste in anime, but they’re both utterly fantastic pieces of work that hold up well

    Couple of things:
-Prince Ciscon gets its name from Cisco Confectionary (Ciscon for short) a brand of Cornflakes which the main character, Ciscon Boy, was the mascot of. We would not see a brother sister romance anime in the 60s. Very odd assumption to make.
-P Production was founded by Tomio Sagisu, Shiro Sagisu's father. Just felt that was kind of worth mentioning.
-Big X isn't about a robot boy who turns himself into a bigger robot. He is a boy who uses a formula developed by his father to make his body as strong as steel and grow larger. To say it combines elements of Tetsujin and Astro Boy is somewhat dubious. Tetsujin existed for a while before it was adapted into anime so to imply Tezuka was jealous is also a dubious assumption.
-You say something to the effect of "turning into a giant robot isn't as cool as piloting a robot" again, Big X isn't a robot and Tetsujin is not piloted.
-Tetsujin was not animated by Mushi Pro.
-I dug deep (wikipedia) and Big X's anime adaptation came about because TBS wanted to adapt it and initially wanted P Productions to do it but they were too busy with 0-Sen Hayato. TBS reached out to Fujioka and encouraged him to found an animation studio so that he could produce the animation. It was not uncommon for members of puppet theatre to participate in anime, legendary director Tadao Nagahama had his start in puppet theatre.
-Calling Hibari Kun the first ever transgender manga adaptation is not true. Some might consider Princess Knight a transgender manga. The titular Dororo from Tezuka's Dororo adapted in 1969 is also transgendered.
-Its Kyojin no Hoshi not Hoshi no Kyojin
-"There is no chance that anyone who saw this cut was thinking about how janky it looked in 1963" not only is Big X from 1964 (small mistake) but viewers could tell that Big X had lower quality animation and mistakenly wrote letters to Mushi Pro telling them to improve the animation since they mistakenly thought it was animated by them. Here is the direct quote from Taku Sugiyama's "The Complete TV Animation Collection Volume 1: "The animation and movement of this work are significantly inferior to those of other works produced by Mushi Productions at the same time, such as Astro Boy. This is because the majority of the staff at Tokyo Movie were inexperienced. It was mistaken for a Mushi Productions work, and Mushi Productions received complaints."
-I don't know the movie you referenced but opening on a car accident is very common in anime since Japan is known as the country of the Traffic War due to the high number of traffic accidents. Astro Boy's origin is also tied to a traffic accident.

      On ciscon... thank goodness lol.
I don't know why I thought Tetsujin was Mushi Pro... sadly I wrote this way back in October and it was going to be a whole edited thing, but I sat on it until I forgot all the sources and what I would've put on-screen.
I thought that Princess Knight was not considered as trans by Tezuka, Dororo does probably count, though.
On the animation stuff, I should've written that bit more clearly. I was only tryin to say that *that moment* wouldn't have read as bad animation (I was mostly trying to say I thought it looked almost-cool)--by the time you get to the total perspective failures midway in tho it'd be hard not to notice.
That traffic war info is mega interesting! The 400 Blows is a very influential French film from 1959.
Thank you for all the info!

Tezuka was a victim of both his publishers and editors, as well as his own overly bloated ambition to try everything and anything. Even if he does not know how. ESPECIALLY if he does not know how.
If he was half as good as Black Jack, he would operate on himself, and live for 30 more years. And see both the Disney Renaissance, and Tiny Toon Adventures. Why am I mentioning those things? No reason. None whatsoever.

Oh I remember you, you’re the one who said you wish you could have a cool hand drawn character for your channel, like Trixie.
I’ll tell you what. Make a video about Seventh Prince, and I’ll draw you something.
I am a friend of Trixie’s like appeared in some of her videos and stuffs.
My motive is I just want more people to talk about seventh prince cause I love the mascot demon goat in it so much.
