Class 20s 20142 & 20189 substitute for 7029 Clun Castle on the Shakespeare Express | 24/7/22

- Today's video is, unfortunately not of No. 7029 Clun Castle, which has been banned from the mainline by Network Rail due to fire risk. Instead, it is of the two Class 20s which deputised, and the decision to go and film diesels is not one I have taken lightly, however since I am on holiday in Italy from tomorrow, I saw it as a last opportunity to get some rail stuff on the channel.
So, here at my local, seen twice is 20142 and 20189 on the Shakespeare Express. I do note that the acceleration and top speed of these two 20s compares pitifully poorly with that of Clun Castle, which is a shame but goes to show steam is better I suppose! Hope you enjoy!

Thanks mate, yes good to see 2 of them because it adds more interest and 1 is too underpowered lol. Clun Castle still passes Bentley Heath faster than these two every time lol. Regards, Dan

Ahhh home !!. Still looks odd without the signal box, and a jungle where the brick pit and goods yard used to be (on the left behind the houses). Great film though 👍👍👍👍
Thank you! The signal box was removed (I do vaguely remember it) in roughly 2007 I think, and the estate was built before my existence in 1993, I believe they removed spoil which they'd dug out to build the M42 and filled the pits with it to build the estate. If you look on Google Earth it is still quite clearly visible where the boundary of the old goods yard was; I should know, I go past it every day 🤣. Regards, Dan
@@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 Ah, I didn't realise you were so local. You're right about the box. It was timber built with internal staircase, and a curious suspended out house for the loo on the back wall. A couple of companies went bust filling the brick pit, and at one point it had to be partially emptied after disqualified material was tipped.!! 😀😅
@@robertbate5790 Oh yes I'm proper local lol. I didn't know that though! I do think I had the opportunity once or twice to go inside the box which was awesome, it's just a real shame it wasn't saved. My dad tells me he actually tried negotiating with NR to buy it off them but they were having none of it. Apparently the excuse that they gave was that the box impeded a driver's view into the up loop, but since the box and loop had existed like that since 1932, I'd say that's totally invalid lol. @@crunchynutsteamfilms5043 I spent a week of nights in that box. My last summer holiday from school 1972 before I started work. I was a friend of the bobby's brother. Still had the gates at the time and I had a go at winding them. Brilliant experience!!
Yeah this was due to steam not allowed to run in hot conditions
