Holy Monastery of the Philosophou | The "lordess" of the Gorge
On August 22 and 23, 2022, the Holy Monastery of the Philosopher of Gortynia celebrates. On Monday the 22nd of the month, the Solemn Vespers will be celebrated at 6pm. and the following day, Tuesday, Orthros and the Divine Liturgy from 7 to 10 am. Tuesday afternoon at 5 p.m. we will walk down to the Old Monastery (Hidden School) and sing the praises of the Virgin there.
Pilgrims will be blessed to venerate Holy Relics of local and other saints. Everyone's presence at our holy celebration will bring honor and joy.
The Monastery of the Philosopher is located in the area "Monopori" of Lousios, 11 km. about south of Dimitsana. It consists of two building complexes, the old monastery and the new one on the right side of Lucius, both, 600 meters apart. This is the famous "lord of the Gorge" of Lucius, rich in history and natural beauty.
The "Hidden School" the old monastery is built inside a cave, about 130µ long. and 0.50 to 8 meters wide, on a steep rock, with an altitude of 500 meters. Its foundation is estimated around 936 to 967 by Ioannis Laipardopoulos, originally from Dimitsana, chief secretary of Emperor Nikiforos Fokas.
Externally, the Monastery was surrounded by a high wall. Inside there was the Temple, cells, auxiliary spaces, as well as an ossuary where the bones of the Monks were kept. The Temple of the Monastery is built on its north side and has been characterized as an architectural masterpiece! Celebrates the Assumption of the Virgin.
The Monastery of the Philosophou was an important national and educational center, since here, too, a "Secret School" operated. In 1765, the Dimitsana School was founded in the Monastery of the Philosopher, which was later transferred to Dimitsana. The Library is well known, with important manuscripts of the 12th century, preserved by the Monastery and which are now kept in the National Library.
The 17th century is the time "when the Monastery of the Philosophou flourished.
In 1691 the Church of the new monastery was founded and in 1700 the two buildings next to it were built. It is alleged that, initially, it functioned as a part of the "Secret School"; it remains unknown when the Monastery of the Philosophou was relocated.
The New Monastery consists of three buildings: the Bank, the Guesthouse, the monks' cells and the auxiliary spaces.
With the main reason that the number of monks was less than six, in 1834, the Minister K.D. Schinas, ordered the dissolution of the Monastery and the sale of its property. Also, by royal decree, on 14/4/1922, the annexation of the two Monasteries to the Monastery of Tidiou Prodroios as its Metochia was approved. After 160 years, in 1933, it was decided to reopen the Monastery of the Philosopher. It celebrates on August 23 the Performance of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and also celebrates the feasts of St. Anna on December 9 and St. Nicholas on May 20.
