    Great idea for smaller plants fig trees. Thanks for sharing the info. My plants are 10' tall and hard to cover. But I did find something that really works well, too. The shiny 'tape' that shimmers and blows in the wind. The tape has been a great help this year to discourage birds on my blackberry plants and has been mostly affective on the blueberries and kept the birds at bay.

      That glimmering tape is keeping the birds out of my strawberries, works great.

      Hey JP!
      Thanks for the tape idea!
      I'll have to try that with cherry trees in the future!

    Perfect timing. One of my projects this weekend was to find a way to protect my blueberry and blackberry bushes. I will try the tulle method. Thanks!!

    Love this technique. Just bought on Amazon in a light green tint for my small fig tree since it is in a prominent area of my backyard.

    Great idea! I use tulle to protect my young bean plants from chipmunks, but next year I'll try it on my Nanking Cherry shrubs and maybe I'll actually get some cherries! Thank you for reminding everyone that birds can get stuck in bird netting!

      Hi Sarah!
      It really works perfectly with blueberries. It should work great for the Cherries too! We have a very diverse group of birds here on the farm and whatever I can do to keep them from harms way is fine by me. Sara, thanks for watching and commenting too!

    Good afternoon Mark 😊 what you've covered the blueberry bushes with works very very well...Great idea.lve been using very fine net curtain whish also works great and l build cage's 8by4 and cover them in the same material for carrots,chard and salad crops.Somtimes it pays to think outside the box as materials can be so expensive.Thankyou so very much for sharing this very helpful video.All the very best 🌱🌱🌱🇬🇧uk

      Hi Joyce!
      It's the best cover for them I've come across so far. Yes, it does pay to think outside the box at times. Sometimes it fails, sometimes it works! Joyce, I love sharing, so it's my pleasure! What's your typical weekly weather in the UK right now? Joyce, what's the best time to visit the UK weather wise? As always, thanks for being so supportive of my channel and always watching. I really appreciate that a lot!

      Good afternoon Mark 😊 The weather here in the UK is all over the place,normally here in the south west of England we have very good summers....sometimes a bit to hot and the plants really don't like it.The last three years lve lost a lot of vegetables due to heat,thats what people all across the south west was experiencing.Nomally we have very mild winters and don't really need a coat/jacket lol can you believe it.lm thinking that's why we have so many pests when growing our veg,as a real good cold winter which we don't have tends to kill a lot off.lts just hitting 29°c at present so the greenhouse has been covered this morning.Thankyou for your reply Mark,all the very best 🌱🌱🌱🇬🇧🌞

    THAT is an awesome idea!!! I have had lots of issues with bird netting doing just what you described. I get them darn birds caught in my nets (to protect my strawberries and other seedlings) and I get tempted to stomp them into the next world, BUT I always let them go with a great deal of cursing at them! 😁❗
    Now I am cursing everyday cause I have not seen a single bumble bee this year so far to pollinate my pickles!!! the little female pickles are dying off cause they haven't been pollinated. Gardening with Mother Nature not cooperating is really frustrating at times.

      You can hand pollenate the cucumbers. It is a pain, but you will get fruit.

    • @cpnotill9264
      @cpnotill9264 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Try planting some anise hyssop which the bumbles adore! It reseeds itself and leaves make an awesome tea too. I just love it for both reasons. Mark really has a great channel here! 😁🌱👍

      Hi Roy!
      I always like to incorporate flowers nearby which should help...
      But I would try hand pollinating with a small paintbrush as an immediate fix...
      Yes, things don't always cooperate haha.

    Hi Mark!
    You’re blueberry’s 🫐 look awesome, I recently planted a blueberry in a pot for the first time and I didn’t know that the birds like it, so thank you for sharing this good idea, by the way it may be winter here but my blueberry is starting to bud for flower already and even my cherry 🍒 tree also is flowering way too early, we also had our first winter storm and it was damaging with very heavy rain and 50 to 70 miles an hour winds.

    Thanks for the tulle tip, you saved me. blue jays, robins, Squirrels and cabbage Moth. I don't have Japanese Beatle I use a nematode spray and it took care of it. Key thing do is. Do it when it's wet and cloudy. in Month of August. It gets the Nematodes to the grub better. boy I Love those time when we didn't have drought. well I hope this helps. you should make a video.

    Mark, dumb question. On Amazon the tulle comes in many colors. Is there one specific color I should be going with? to confuse the birds I mean.

    • @marksgardenlife5971
      @marksgardenlife5971  3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hi Roy!
      From what I've read, birds hate the color white and avoid it when possible, so white tulle is the best.

      @@marksgardenlife5971 You should do a video on them and any problems (or the opposite) you see. I'm really interested in how other people's tomatoes are growing since I'm growing so many new ones myself. It's only my second year at this so seeing what a garden looks like elsewhere is helpful. Plus I'm just obsessed with tomato varieties and already planning for next year. I think it has been awhile since your last tour, right? I wish I had as much space as you! I've got mine cramed in cheek by jowl so I do a lot of pruning. I love your cages too. I've harvest some cherries so far and also successfully dealt with BER in my Roma types. Many of mine in my new beds have severely curled leaves that I suspect is due to pesticides in the "organic" compost in it. If you use municipal organic matter, how can you know some doesn't have grasses or whatever that has been sprayed? I had a similar problem with last year's beds from that source. This year I used activated charcol on them and either that or time has worked it out because those plants look super healthy.
