    We moved to our 11 acres in 2011 from a large city in the Midwest with zero carpentry and farming skills. We live with no solar / wind power / public water or well. We share our adventure to a sustainable life, growing our own food from vegetables to meat. We post videos DAILY and they range from HOW TO to EVERYDAY LIFE and NUTRITION on the off grid homestead. We were city folks just like you probably and wanted to enjoy life and have more control over our food. We share food recipes as well as natural remedies.

    I use a spray bottle with water and Dawn dish soap. Each evening I spray the Japanese Beatles and Squash bugs and they die within a few minutes of being sprayed. Shooting destructive bugs each evening is very therapeutic. DIE BUGS DIE.

      Yes, Les Smithfield is correct that a homemade insecticidal soap will kill Japanese beetles. It’s not immediate, but it does first immobilize them and then it kills them. I’m not sure of the mechanism because insecticidal soap is usually recommended for soft bodied insects but it will kill Japanese Beetles within a few minutes. This is not helpful if the beetles are devouring your rose blooms, because a flower drenched in soapy water may not survive, but when they are on the leaves of plants it is a very effective treatment. Of course, you have to keep at it every day, because if you have JBs it’s very likely that your entire neighbourhood does as well, including parks and naturalized areas where no one is ever going to try to control them and where there are some JBs more will want to come to join them. Eventually I removed almost all my roses and our grape vine, the two plants they found most attractive. This year, I picked off and killed about 2 dozen beetles the whole season, instead of having to deal with dozens and dozens of them every day. I think I made my homemade soap spray a little strong than the usual internet recommendations because they are hard bodied insects, but no that much stronger.

    • @nancygood6444
      @nancygood6444 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I have been doing that too this year. The beetles die almost immediately. Just a little bit of dish soap in your spray bottle of water. Some leafs do seem to die when sprayed.

    • @roywarriner8441
      @roywarriner8441 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      I think it's better to pick them off and put them in the soapy water. Spraying your plants with soapy water repeatedly will damage the plants, they can't breath through soap film any more than beetles can. I tried that with lily beetles and almost killed the lilies too.

I put Japanese beetle traps two blocks away in the park four blocks away on the highway and a block down on the highway from my house does that help? The bags are full

    We put a trap about 10 ft up in air attached to a pvc pipe. Saw on another video. Tried it. Had to empty the bag every day there were so many. Got a 5 gallon bucket worth of the bugs. After two years of doing this really put a dent in the population.

    We had the beetles bad when we moved here 10 years ago. This ground used to be pasture land when they started developing housing here about 15 years ago. I put down the milky spore granules on the one acre and a little on the neighbors about five or six years ago, picked it up at the farmers cooperative follow directions on bag. I don’t see the beetles any more. I also worried about if I use it but the neighbors don’t, but I guess it spreads thru the ground.

  • @jjxartist
    @jjxartist 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    They are so destructive! 2 years ago I used nematodes (hb) and this year I used 2 types (hb, sf) of nematodes from arbico. The JB population is Significantly lower but I still have a few. It gets very cold in WI, nematodes can't survive it or move through the soil horizontally, application is hard to ensure full coverage, we also spray about 3 acres of surrounding areas. I wonder if using this as well would finish them off, in soils that freeze like they do here?

    The problem I ran into was that it may have worked to kill the grubs, I don't know.. but I can tell you I still have tons of Japanese beetles even 2 years later. My speculation is they "I" may not have as many beetles, but unless all of your neighbors are doing the same, the beetles in their lawn just fly over to my garden.

    I just bought milky spore but I'm scared to use it as it says right on the box not to let any of it get on your skin or clothes. To use a mask, safety glasses, gloves, apply on a not windy day, harmful to pets and humans. To separate clothes to wash after using. Even that they can halt respiration and cause death. I thought they were supposed to be safe. I'm going to return it and try nematodes.

    I use to have a real problem with Japanese Beetles but I used the bag method and rigged a deal I saw on here so they would drop in a bucket of water. The next year they would come back so what I finally realized was where I was discarding them. I found don't throw them in your pond nor stomp on them in the ground. I got rid of them when I drained them and put them in a resealable plastic bag and took them to the dump.

    Hi Stacy, I sure hope your milky spore powder works for you.
    I used a cousin of milky spore (bacillus popilliae) called Bt (bacillus thuringiensis) I got from Gardens Alive. I was overrun with Japanese beetles everywhere and moles were chowing their grubs in one area of our lawn that stays moist even in the Summer heat. The Bt worked wonders but like you explained it works on their grubs so you have to get the stuff out there before they are a problem. We went from having 1000's of beetles to 10's of beetles. I applied that Bt some 15 years ago now. I still have no grubs on that section of lawn and our Japanese beetle population remains pretty low compared to before the Bt. However, last year I noticed a few more beetles than normal ~100 total on our grapes so I think I may have do a little searching to find where the new beetle larvae nursery is. The moles are now tilling a new area of lawn so I'll check there for grubs this year for sure. BTW - it also takes out other grubs as well like June bugs.

      @S Masco buying things online tend to involve international shipping and import taxes which can make things VERY expensive here. The BIG manufacturers use lots of chemicals. We are lucky that we still have lots of local farmers here we can buy from. Flour...?? We use "San Blas |Harina de trigo" The WHEAT PEOPLE claim there is no GMO wheat... I am at a loss about what legal terminology means as I know there is wheat whose genetics have been changed...but I can tell you Mexico Banned GMO Corn out right in 2013 I think it was. There is this information I found
      www.loc.gov/law/help/restrictions-on-gmos/mexico.php Right now people here are fighting tooth and nail to make sure these things do not make it into the food system here.

    Apply in the Fall while temps are still warm, when grubs are feeding heavily. Grubs have to eat it for it to work & spread. They don’t feed much at all in Spring. The ring damage you see in the grass was actually done in the fall. Make sure the grass is dry when using the cardboard applicator. I did it when it was moist from dew and the powder will cake and prevent dispersion. The cardboard applicator will also absorb moisture and start expanding around the plastic cap, potentially leaking & failing. Water the powder into the ground AFTER you apply it. Also do not use it on a windy day. It will drift. I applied it 7 years ago and just had to reapply it last year. I started finding grubs in the borders of the lawn & planting beds a couple of years ago. We then had moles tunneling into our planting beds looking for grubs because I only applied MSD to the lawn. Apply it to both lawn and planting beds. It works, but I don’t believe it will last a decade.

    it's very expensive, especially if you have a lot of acreage, need to apply for a few years in a row for it really to take affect and if you don't do all your acreage or your neighbors don't treat, their beetles just come on over to your place to feed...and it doesn't really work the first year...at least that's our experience

    I’ve been using it for 6 yrs in (MN). Re apply. I really like the pelleted version of the same brand you bought. Much easier to apply. It has helped, but i live in a suburban neighborhood. So no matter what I’ll get them from others property. I also put up traps on the outside perimeter of my property and hand pick twice a day. I’ve noticed a decline in grubs in my soil. You should really try the pelleted version in the fall.

    Stacy- You are so awesome. I so appreciate your work and sharing all of your knowledge- Both you and Doug. I have been an organic, nonchemical person for about 40 years and I love seeing so many people making these choices and your VLOG is making a huge difference I am sure, We all need to bring our soul purposes forward - especially now. A few things I wanted to share with you what I have learned, I would love to hear if you know differently or if you can share a comment. You made some awesome-looking pancakes ( in the last video I watched) However you added honey, which is really in my world of Ayurveda and Macrobiotics a big NO - Honey should never be heated. When honey is heated above 104* F or 40*C it turns into glue and produces toxins in your body Better to use maple syrup or other natural sweetener. You could cook without it and then add the honey after onto the pancakes, Also when you add it to tea - let it cool just a bit.
    Also in this video you mentioned getting rid of Moles - actually - moles are so beneficial - a pain but so beneficial because they actually carry the biologics in the soil across the terrain and aerate it. Check out Lawns to Meadows by Owen Wormser and Natures Best Hope by Douglas Tallamy. Sorry to take up so much space and do not mean to jump on your wonderful sharing but hopefully you will take it in the spirit of sharing and co-creating a new paradigm, and continue to do your wondering healing work.
    Thanks for listening!

      In the late 70's on PBS a program about making your own natural Japanese Beatle spray. These Beatles made lace out of my Concord Grape leaves and the silks on my corn. This recipe worked! I collected a pint jar full of Beatles, put them in my designated garden blender, filled the blender with water and blended everything up. I then strained the juice through old pantyhose. I then put it into my garden sprayer and filled it with water. Sprayed the grapes and the corn. I have never had Japanese Beatles destroy my garden and grapes again.

      Sorry for the misspelling of the beetles, my phone has a bad habit of changing words. It drives me crazy. I guess I scared the beetles, they warned the Japanese Beatles to stay away from the crazy lady's garden on top of the hill, she'll put you in a blender and make beetlejuice out you. The guy on that show said any bugs you want to get rid of make juice out of them. I only did the Japanese beetles. I do use companion planting, works great.

    It does take a couple years, in the meantime I use the traps away from the garden, but I fill a 55 gallon drum 2/3 full with water and dishsoap, cut the bottom off the bag and stick it into the hole in the top of drum. I put in a tpost to hang the bag on. Goes all season without having to empty it. I roll it down the hill to sit and empty.

    • @WatchwomanOnTheWall-zk9po
      @WatchwomanOnTheWall-zk9po 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Can you describe this again. Sounds like a good idea, but I've never seen the trap and can't imagine this set up by your short description. What bag do you stick in the drum hole? How did you rig the t-post for the bag? I thought you said you stuck the bag into the hole on the drum?

    • @iscetic
      @iscetic 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      WatchwomanOnTheWall 2015 Umm, drive the tpost in, it’s just what I hung the trap on. Set the barrel up next to it so the larger of the two plug holes in the top of the barrel is nearest the post.fill with water 2/3 full, squirt in a bunch of dish soap. Take your trap, which is a plastic bag with lure on top, cut the bottom off the bag, insert it well into the barrel hole so the Beatles can slide in, tie the trap to the tpost with wire and whala, you don’t have to empty the trap all season. I just had so many and got tired of constantly emptying the trap/bag. If they’re going in the barrel they’re not eating your plants or breeding.

  • @camillamauzy8156
    @camillamauzy8156 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I have used milky spore a few times. But it felt like a fail because if our neighbors don’t treat for them then we still got a lot of Japanese beetle adults. Plus, when it rains we get a lot of runoff from the top of the hill in the neighborhood. About 3 years ago I bought the traps and wow they filled up fast. I had to empty several bags every few days for about 10 days. The next year, there were not as many, as in very, very few. This year I have only seen a couple so far. Putting traps on a shepherds hook, about ten feet or more away from the roses and hydrangea’s I expect just a few. Yes they are breeding, but they aren’t making it out of the bags to go anywhere.

    I actually just bought some of this yesterday....waiting for its arrival and of course it just rained all day yesterday and my spigots outside have massive 'shoot up in the air' leaks. Hoping with the night dew it will work its way down. Definitely needed something safe for the dogs. We just started having this grub problem last year. Been in our house for 32 years and never had them before. I was scooping them up by the dustpan fulls. Bug spray and vinegar seemed to do the trick last year but was worried about the safety of the dogs the whole time and still had to sweep all of the dead ones into the dustpan and discard. They were actually coming in our basement and I kept stepping on them by accident. YUCK!!!
