- Gotta love the sound of this 2 cylinder 4 stroke O.S. Gemini 160 engine! I want this Vintage Hanger 9 Ultra Stick to be aerobatic capable. Will this engine deliver the power I need? Let’s find out!
On board glow is the way to go with these twin cylinder engines.
Really enjoyed the video. I love the plane and the engine. I'm flying 37 years and nearly all my planes are equipped with fourstroke engines. They've always been my favourite. You flew the Ultra stick superbly. Well done.
Thank you sir. Yes, 4 strokes are awesome!
Nothing like some nice prop rip on a beautiful day... especially with some twin cylinder noises to go with it!
That engine is intended to run with an onboard glow so both cylinders have constant plug voltage. That insures one cylinder doesn’t die. Running it on one can hydrolock the other and we all know what that would do.
really enjoyed watching that….you just took me back 52 years. Well not the flying - I was never that good, just nice to see young guys having fun flying model aeroplanes and I like how you involve your brothers as well. Great keep it up. And yes that engine did sound good especially with the prop tips going supersonic!
Do love the sound of the 4 strokes.
Seems like that would be a good candidate for onboard glow power.
Great to see young people in the hobby!! Be careful at airports though.....
That was an awesome Flying Stick Plus! Never seen one fly that fast or sound better than yours! Thanks for sharing.
I could listen to that prop cut at bedtime to sleep on. Very cool. Looking forward for more videos. Thanks guys
The four stroke twin sounds great. The Master Airscrew prop is good for fields where it’s likely to be hitting grass, weeds or dirt but not the best for performance. An APC will wake it up although I wouldn’t have expected an increase in performance. The 30cc gas engine you went to is a much better match. My same sized Great Planes Giant Ugly Stick had a heavy, low power 40cc single cylinder engine on it when I bought it. I replaced it with an EME 35 and it has unlimited vertical now.
I loved that older model US 120. Flew one with a Super Tiger 3000 later changed to a Zenoh G26. The g26 was heavy and not a lot of power. Father in law crashed it and replaced it with a Jerry's Big Boy. It flys with a 1.10 YS turning a 17X6 APC and has better low speed than the Ultra Stick.
Awesome stuff!! Promote all kids you can find into this wonderful hobby. I'm working hard at it myself. Keep it up!
Try an on board glow driver. Way more reliable, easier and for sure SAFER to start! Enjoy and have a great time.
Got 40+ years flying/building rc planes and still having a lot of FUN!!!
Nice plane! Love the ultra stick, mine has an old OS Max .61 and she flies sweet! I really want to put a four stroke on it, they do sound really nice.
That is a good aircraft . I had a smaller 60 size one . I was given a giant swizzle stick it had the wing broke . I rebuilt it and put big flaps on it . Many hours of fun with it .
Nice! Put an onboard glow driver and you won't ever have to worry about a flame out and you can get some really sweet idle RPM's
I have one and thought abt installing it but I didn’t want all that extra weight on board.
Well you won't have to reach around that prop either to remove glow batts😮
@@flyinghighjoe One other thing to consider! The amount of weight and power you have already added to the stick the glow system would be insignificant in comparison. I have a Great Planes cub 60 that I stuffed one of these engines into and I have the onboard glow system. Given the wing area and power gains it really isn't a problem.
I use glow systems on my bigger planes, I use a micro switch to activate it from idle to 1/4 throttle.
I had the same airplane, but w a DLE 30cc. Your twin sounds great and makes the plane fly very well. A DLE will have more torque, and will need a bigger prop. I had to bend the legs inward to clear the prop from the ground, it pulled to the heavens.
I’m thinking of swapping the twin for a gas engine. Not sure if I wanna go for a Zenoah G 26 or G38. Thanks for the landing gear tip. I’ll have to do that.
NIce! I have a Great Planes Big Giant Stik with a Saito FA180 on it but have been debating moving it to electric using a Power 180 I happened into. Its really my only gasser left and 10s-12s sounds fun....
I have the 120twin in my 1/4cub, these engines have a tendency to drop a cylinder, get yourself two rcxel onboard glows & run them through a switch on the radio. Haven’t had an engine out since doing this
I lost power on one cylinder multiple times already. Thanks for the tip it sure seems like it needs onboard glow
You will need an RCEXL Twin Cylinder Universal Luminous Driver. It can provide ignition to the spark plug manually or via remote control. It will make the engine work sweetly.
Take care, the OS twins are noted for blowing out a con rod. The bottom end lets go.
Vintage!! I remember when these things were released. Doesn't seem that long ago????
Right! Vintage would be with a round vertical stab/rudder, scalloped edge ailerons and the Iron Cross on the fin 🙂
Phil Kraft designed the first Ugly Stik in the 1960s. Countless variants have followed.
I have one of these on a Great Planes Sportster 90/120 and it works well. Mind you, oil all over the plane with those dual exhausts.
If you keep it running like that (8200 RPM on the ground, while hoilding full throttle in a dive) it will exceed 9K in the air on a regular basis and you'll break a conrod. These are not aerobatic engines, not designed for hotrodding.
My advise is to prop it a bit heavier, and also: get a CDI ignition system (CH, or RcExl).
Bwahhaha my previous reply got canned, it's on Ebay now. 🤣
I’m swapping it for a DLE 30 now😁. The O.S. 160 runs good and sounds amazing but it still doesn’t have the power I’m looking for.
@@flyinghighjoe Well, it never was an engine designed for THAT... (all out power, I mean). Mine does about 2,4 bhp @7600 RPM, burning gasoline, not Methanol. A DLE 30 most definitely will exceed that 2,4 hp, but not by all that much.
But they sound like crap.
I saw you stated earlier that yours only produced 2 hp, then most definitely something is wrong with it: On glow fuel, these things should touch 3 hp.
I bought the O.S. 160 without knowing much about. I found it on Marketplace for a good price so I went ahead and bought it expecting to fly with it a few times then ultimately move on to a gas engine. Research shows the OS 160 will put out 2hp at 10,000 while the DLE 30 produces 3.7 hp at 8500 rpm. I’m not too concerned that the DLE 30 won’t have enough power
@@flyinghighjoe Those numbers are incorrect, in fact that engine will self-destruct if operated at 10K, and it produces its peak power (which on methanol really is around 3 hp) at about 8K
I know because mine does about 2,4 hp @ 7700, burning gasoline. Methanol produces approximately 25% more power than gasoline. Being an engineer and having measured myself, I am pretty sure of those numbers. If you have access to a propcalculator, run the numbers yourself: My prop is an APC 18 x 6 Wideblade, and it peaks on the ground at 7700 RPM.
The folks I know that have one running methanol, typically use an 18 x 8 Menz or Master, getting comparable RPM.
Heck, mine is not even the OS, but the cheap chinese ASP copy....

I get well over 10 lbs of thrust with that thing, and I use it for glider towing... Which is a power-sports...
how do u get the prop to make that sound. really awesome video.
A larger prop diameter will have a faster tip speed compared to a smaller prop diameter rotating at the same rpm. Higher tip speed = more prop noise.
All of my planes are over engined. My .60 stick has a 1.08, my 120 has a Zenoah g45 and is a blast to fly.
sweet!
never went to electric...glad i kept all my glow fuel stuff ...that plane looks like a ugly stick....thanks for the filming of the run............ t.s.
I don’t know which model of the Ultra Stick this is, probably the 120. If so, AND you want to make it perform and sound cool, just run a YS big block, from a 140 and up. You can find 140’s all over for not much cash. Personally, I’d put a damn DLE20 on it and enjoy the fuel savings. If it’s a current 10cc model, put a 75 or 90 size glow 2c. It will make it as crazy as it needs.
It’s the 120 size albeit it’s the OG version which is several pounds heavier than the 120 light version. I recently put a DLE 30 on it. It rips pretty good🚀
What size is the stick? and the size and Brand of engine?
It’s the original Hanger 9 Ultra Stick. 81” wingspan. Engine is an O.S. 160 Gemini.
Oh man, that sound triggered false smell sensations of burnt fuel!!!😂
Need more rc plane videos
What the radio brand?
When flying on an airport you are required to have a GTA radio to monitor traffic! 😱😝🤪🤣😁👍👍🇺🇲
If you read the AMA rules your not supposed to fly within 7 miles of a municipal airport. This one may be abandoned but its still an active airport.
You can monitor the aircraft's ADSB Out on your phone.
Yes ...agree can be a big problem...if old radio is used & frequency gets hit plane is then out of control..
ive been tuned in for over a year and still haven't gotten an update! wats up?
You and the fam getting lonely for me?🧐😜
Did you shorten the nose? I think I need to do that to mine to get the weights off the tail. I inherited the one I have. The original builder added 2 1/2 ounces of weights under the Vertical stabilizer.
No I did nothing to the airframe on mine. Wow must be he had a heavy engine on the nose!
NIIIIICE 👌🏻
Beautiful 🌷👍
Just an obvious comment, what was the weight difference between the old and new motor, i guess the new OS may have been heavier, did you check the CG ?. If heaver would count for the nose down attitude. What was the HP rating of the new motor compared to the old motor ?.
Good question. The Saito 150S weighs 31.3 oz w/out muffler and produces 2.5 hp while the O.S. 160 Gemini weighs 38.8 oz and only produces 2 hp. Now these are manufacturers specs but they are very comparable engines. I did not do more flight testing since recording this video but I’m really curious what the performance difference is between the old and new engine when using the same 16x8 prop. Also I had a good chunk of lead under the nose with the 150 and that weight is now all engine. The plane balances abt 1/2 inch behind the spar which got me thinking it would be a little tail heavy but apparently cg should be even further back.
I have a vintage yellow Ultrastick .60 that has been e-converted from a Saito 125 to a 2200+ watt electric motor. It does an easy 105 mph, as measured using a calibrated GPS unit. Sticks are great planes that can fly slow or fast. Without the motor sound, you can to easily hear the very distinctive whistle sound from the wings .
😳Dang that’s fast! I love sticks too. I have this one and the Ultra Stick 25e with an O.S. 32SX. Ive never clocked it with a gps but she rips pretty good
Put in a hotter plug and it wont kill a cylinder like that.
It’s a 4 stroke, not a whole lot of choice in plugs. Smart people just buy OS F plugs and call it a day.
Good afternoon, I am from Ukraine, can you provide me with the drawings of this model of the airplane?
A twin cylinder will give you less power than a single cylinder of the same displacement. Did you have permission to fly at that airport?
Yes I talked with the airport manager before flying there. Thanks for asking
Old guard. Gatekeeper. Karen. You know. In my day. Cool airplane.
Bad opening.
And people wonder why the FAA is on people's ass? Flying at an airport with basic safety concerns......thanks JOE!!!!
@alwaysflying6540 It is this ignoring of rules that makes FAA dig in ever more......time of do as you please as passed. like it or not.
@alwaysflying6540 it is...but it is our new reality. FAA rules the skies....one comment or complaint and a pile of new shit rolls down hill.
