There will never be another Nick Drake, and that's ok- we only need the one. I think this rendition is great and if it gets younger people listening to Drake then FANTASTIC!
Reading some of the comments on here.....thank fuck TH-cam wasn't around years ago. The Beatles would have been castigated for not being as good as Elvis when they started out. And Elvis would have been destroyed for not writing his own songs. Kurt Cobain? Can you imagine what the keyboard guitar teachers would have made of his technique?Artists like Jake are so rare these days, just a young lad with a guitar and a genuine knowledge and affection for Nick Drake, Donavan, Don McLean, Robert Johnson. He doesn't want the limelight and he probably thought I know, I really love this song, I'm going to have a bash at it in my own style, and picked up the chords one morning......not knowing it would trigger a tsunami of haters and critics. In fact the avalanche of hate for anyone that does anything these days is truly fucking depressing.
Some of the songs on his latest album are cringe worthy for sure, I like a couple tho. im a really big fan of jake buggs music and even his nonchalant stage presence , but idk what the fuck he was thinking doing some of those tracks and allowing them to be put on the album ESPECIALLY "Aint no rhyme" . Im grateful tho for the few new songs i do like but overall i was pretty disappointed , shocked ,and let down.

Well if we're being honest half the White Album fucking sucks as well, but I wouldn't be enough of a prat to just plaster that on the internet.
Due to Drakes constant use of irregular tunings and cluster chords, covering Drake was no small task, so I really find this artist bold, as well as talented for his playing, no matter how far from original he was.
I've just checked Nick Drake's original version, and I found it beautiful and peaceful. It gets me pissed to read people discussing if Jake's cover is better or not than the origina. And I think that covers were never about how better can you sound than the original version. It's all about how you interpreted a song and made it yours, in your own way. That's beautiful, that's the magic about art. Jake is such a genuine person, and he made this his own.
nah mate... very average, and butchered the guitar.. voice is in no way suited to Nick drake. your comment has aged badly pal... where has this kid been for the last 7 yrs?> or was he ditched due to his, (Im too good, and cant be arsed) attitude...
I've been watching some of Jake's cover songs and I saw many many hating and ridiculous comment about how Jake sang it. I have one big question, have you ever heard cover songs before? It's a cover, of course it HAS to be different from the original one because Jake covered it, not TRYING to be the original singers. Go check those cover singers on here, they sang with their own version, totally different with the original one and NO ONE complain about that, unlike some haters here. I meant, you make yourself look so freaking stupid with those ridiculous comment. Like, seriously.
Here there's some interesting comment of Jake bugg about making a cover of this song (you can translate it cause its in norwegian): p3.no/musikk/britisk-stjerneskudd-i-popsalongen/ And in general he says he fell in love with this song, and then decided to cover it, although, in his own words, "I'll never sing it as good as the original". IS IT OK NOW, EVERYONE? Jake is just making a version. Finished issue.
Oh wow, I didn't know covers must sound like the original. Some folks just have the need to always complain about something. This is an effin' COVER. It's Jake's own rendition/interpretation.
Haters gotta hate...I believe it's a compliment when anyone wants to cover someone elses songs. I would feel greatful if any artist covered a song a wrote......Does this NOT make Nick Drake a TIMELESS artist?? Look at how many YOUNG Jake Bugg Fans are going to look up Nick Drake because of this Video.....Thumbs up for trying Jake...I Still Love Both Of YOU for your Music.
Nick Drake played with finesse. His music was dynamic and full of intentional nuances that made his work as great as it is. This kid is just slamming the strings haphazardly.
+chippchipp1 Slamming the strings haphazardly?? Are you fucking kidding me man?? Watch the Guitar Moves video with Jake Bugg, or hell just actually look at the guy play, he's definitely not "slamming the strings haphazardly".
Can't get enough of this. Jake gives this a less stylistic rendition than Drake.. His vocals are clear and strong....and carries an innocence and boyish masculinity that endears you to him.
Well, he's not Nick Drake, but we all know that . I think this young man is pretty good. He showed this song some respect and did a nice version of it in his own way. Nothing wrong with that. I'm a huge Nick Drake fan and I liked it.
It`s not bad, but I recommend to watch Tobias Wilden`s (just some youtube guy, not a star) covers of Nick Drake songs. In before, I don`t know him personally, but they are too good to remain unknown for Drake fans.
He is really good, just discovered him today. Josh Turner has really nice covers too. I knew Drake, but I didn't began listening to him with attention. When I saw Josh's "Pink moon" cover I listened to his albums in a row. Really nice and sweet voice, and the guitar is just wonderful.
Jake I am so happy to find out that you love Nick Drake's music too! This is one of my fav's but they are all great! You are excellent with your own stuff but thanks for singing Nick Drake!;)
do the people that are posting negative comments realise how idiotic they look? let's all bear in mind that most of you can't even play one note on a Guitar let alone cover a full song. why don't you just keep the negativity with you and skip along to another video?
What talent, voice and instrumentation!! I'm 67 and a lot to learn from this kid! What open tuning is this? With my arthritis I think I can tackle at least fragments of this being able to bar most of it. Also I play harmonica and wondering besides whatever tuning this is, wondering what key signature this is played in and what key of harmonica I should use.
Am I the only person that doesn't understand all the acclaim that Jake Bugg receives. Yeah, okay, 'Lightning Bolt' was 'alright', but I haven't heard anything that is worthy of the constant praise and veneration everybody seems to be showering upon him.
its a very new sound, an old one brought back by a 19 year old and that calls for a lot of attention. I really like him though, but thats the best explanation i have for all his sudden fame
He's a songwriter, singer, guitar player, good looking, mature, decent, intelligent and authentic person. He doesn't need to be sexually explicit or have a lot of effects or fashion. He doesn't jump around. He doesn't try to call attention to himself. He sings straight from the heart. His songs (music and lyrics) are assembled with skill, beauty, variety and depth. Especially for one his age. His voice provides a certain edge and I wouldn't have him any other way.
S Kirk Very nicely stated, Jake is a talent, no question... I do wish he would try to look and act less miserable when he is performing... that may seem petty, but live performance is partly visual and audience interactive... I hope he grows into it, perhaps he is introverted at heart.
Billder Inbaja Indeed. I saw him live in April and he didn't even say hi to the audience or even interacted and only partialy smiled when he messed up the lyrics. Still, he is great live.

Nick Drake played with finesse. His music was dynamic and full of intentional nuances that made his work as great as it is. This kid is just slamming the strings haphazardly.
chippchipp1 I prefer Drake by far. But you are clearly not a guitarist, or not an advanced one if you say this kid plays badly.
stratocluster
I never said he's a bad guitarist, I'm saying he doesn't play this particular song with the correct dynamics
chippchipp1 he just went for a different dynamic which sounds more like his personal style, you should listen to his work and you'll understand
+chippchipp1 Slamming the strings haphazardly?? Are you fucking kidding me man?? Watch the Guitar Moves video with Jake Bugg, or hell just actually look at the guy play, he's definitely not "slamming the strings haphazardly".
Jake's version is the exact opposite, if there ever was one, of slamming the strings haphazardly.

Can't get enough of this. Jake gives this a less stylistic rendition than Drake.. His vocals are clear and strong....and carries an innocence and boyish masculinity that endears you to him.

quit playing so loud the whole time. Nick Drake's songs were so good because they had a quiet, peaceful mood about them.
There would really be no point at all to listening to a cover of a song if it's performed with an imitation of the creators musical expression.
Well he plays it exactly the same just...worse
Its a cover why should he do it the same as the origional?
