- We don’t often think about the influence of a painting's size, scale, and orientation, but these factors have a big impact on how we see a work of art, and paintings in particular. In this video, artist Jill Poyerd takes the viewer through the history of painting size and orientation and then leads a discussion on how artists can apply the information today.

Jill!!! Como siempre!!! Un video ESPECTACULAR!!! Lo estuvimos esperando por mucho tiempo!!! Muchísimas Gracias!!!🎉🎉🎉 😊 Y saludos desde Uruguay 😊😊😊
¡Muchas gracias Víctor! Mis disculpas por el largo retraso. ¡Espero que todo esté bien con usted!
This was a very insightful video. Thank you so much! Many are disappointed in the Mona Lisa because it's much smaller than they expected. Henry the Eighth is a good example of making a person look very imposing and important.
Great examples - Yes, I have to admit that when I first saw the Mona Lisa, was a little taken back as well!
Superbly written, narrated and presented. Thank you.
Thank you. I really appreciate that.
Thank you for such an amazing and informative video. So helpful.
I’m so glad it was helpful
Glad youre back!!!
Thanks!
BEAUTIFUL...!!!!
Thank you so much for your hard work on all these videos! They are very valuable documentary type of video! I feel that I am attending art class in some kind of famous art school/university!
What a wonderful comment - thank you!
Very good. The division of the canvas could be done by measurement ( inches) or just divide the canvas into two and then again into the halves of the canvas. This would be for copying from a photo/ drawing to a painting.
Hockney was able to buy another canvas to add to his painting to make a huge picture size. He was and is lucky to be able to afford anything from the art shop. Perhaps this came from his concept called add-ons. The computer image can be adjusted and then painted, usually only a small part of the composition at first.
Yeah, you're back!!!
Fab! Thanks....
❤
thank you Jill always so good :)
I'm so glad you enjoyed it!
Super interesting presentation, thank you so much. As a photographer, that gives a lot to think about as well.
I'm so glad. It's always nice to know that those in other genres benefit from the material.
Very helpful, I just enjoy all your instructional videos! Tks so much…
Very nice, thank you!
Have missed your tutorials!
Thank you, Steve! I'm sorry about the long delay. Life events last year were very time consuming, but things are back on track it seems.
I love your voice & work🥰
Thank you so much!
Love your videos!! So beautiful and informative. You are totally unique! Thank you for sharing your incredible knowledge with us! I feel inspired and want to stop what I’m doing and pick up a brush!
Thank you so much! And I'm so pleased to know it makes you feel like painting...nice!
Thanks glad to hear you again . I do love these so informative
Glad to hear you again 🙂🙏
❄️💙.
Another great presentation. Learned a lot. Thank you very much Mrs. Poyerd.
Glad you enjoyed it!
This is so important. Thank you!
I enjoyed this so much I'm going to watch it again. I love learning about the logistics of painting in history. It's so so fascinating! Thank you so much for producing this post! ❤
I'm glad you enjoyed it! It was a surprisingly tough research project (the history) but very rewarding to put all of the information together.
@@JillPoyerdFineArt definitely sensed this was a huge endeavor. While in school. we never discussed scale and its relationship to the processing of materials, such as the width of canvas looms. It makes total sense though. Production value of this video is superb as well. I feel that this was a valuable contribution to understanding painting history.
Thank you. I’m hoping some of my material can fill in the gaps for people. It seems like there are several areas in the world of art where there’s either confusion or missing information that could be helpful. I’m glad you found this video does just that in some way.
Many thanks, good topic that everyone works on but never thinks deeply about.
Exactly. That was what I was thinking when I first came up with the idea. It was an interesting deep dive.
fantastic , thank you Jill
Thank you, very informative. It was like a vast mini education for me.
I'm glad you enjoyed it. It was a really interesting project to research, actually.
Fantastic as always.
Excellent, as always!
Thank you!
Great video, thanks
Very informative videos...enjoyable and relaxing to watch. What galleries in Northern Virginia showcase your art?
I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I'm afraid my online content work has taken up so much of my time that I don't have the painting output needed to work with brick and mortar galleries right now. I do have a few paintings on UGallery.com and I do participate in occasional regional shows. You're welcome to submit your email via my website to receive my quarterly newsletter. Trimming a painting 😮. Rather unorthodox, but I suppose there was little else to be done. At first I thought the paintings were done on site. I was not aware that paintings could be affixed to ceilings.
Yes, it was so interesting to read that. I know artists sometimes crop their paintings, but to think the installers had to do it....yikes.
Grazie 😍
Thank you so much!
I'm painting a 21" x 24" egg tempera....it is more work than the murals I've worked on.
It’s a beautiful medium to work with but, yeah, your comment says a lot.
Jill, could you please make a video on the "picture frame"? I don't understand why these old masters need to have their art pieces in such big, heavy/thick, and luxurious frame. It looks distracting to me. Is there any aesthetic value of it?
That could be a very interesting topic, actually. Sometimes the frames are selected by museum professionals, but other times they are the originals. In medieval times the frame was often literally an extension of the painting surface. I'll add the topic to my list of video ideas.
Thank you so much Jill. My heart and love are with you. I love my classes on Udemy so much, I know I have been away a while as well. But you are still my favourite. 🤗🤗
Thank you so much! You are so sweet...so appreciated.
