  • Toaks Titanium Wood Stove - Large
    I wanted to try out the Toaks wood stove, so I had one sent to me by Cedar Ridge Outfitters to try out. I found it relatively easy to use. I decided to give dry backing a try using this stove, check out the video to see if you can dry bake over a wood stove!

    I like your style, Spiguyver. The message was comprehensive, detailed, and interesting. I own one of these stoves but have never burned anything in it. Just packed it away in one of my bags. Now I know how to use it efficiently should the need arise. Thank you, sir.

    Good to see a review on one of these where it actually gets to a gasification state and burns as it was designed to. Seen so many by people who don't seem to have a clue as to how it should work. You know - if they got a Porsche, Lamborghini or Ferrari, they would still be hard pressed to beat the neighbour's kid riding his three wheeler, pedal bike. Good for you and thank you!

      If you know anyone with a Porsche, Lamborghini or Ferrari that are having that problem, please show them my way and I'll not only teach them how to engage launch control, but I'll film the whole thing!

    Thank you for the practical information. I ordered a Toaks stove, and it was a pleasure to have useful information on using it.

    You produce great videos. I’m not sure how much prep time is involved, but they always feel like you are super informed, yet just gabbing with a friend.

      Thanks, there is quite a bit that goes into each video. My newer videos have a lot more editing time involved too! Thanks for the kind words!

    The top down burn is great. I use a cotton ball that has been dipped in melted wax. Put on a couple drops of alcohol and light. Hardly ever smokes.

    A gasifier stove is defined as one w/ TWO burns (a primary burn & a secondary burn). So, this one is actually a gasifier, despite what some say.

      This is partial gasification, that is, partial pyrolysis. Here, the combustion of the wood charge takes place in three stages. #1. Evaporation, drying and primary combustion. #2. Afterburning of volatile chemical compounds (at a temperature of over 900 C!). #3. Charcoal...
      This stove is not a gasifier! There is no wood gas here! And here's the big difference...

    Great video! Im a toaks fan. Been eyeing one of these since they came out. Had a stainless Solo Stove but when I looked for places to lighten my pack I ditched it. Plus when I carried it I found myself jealous of the jetboil guys who were already eating while I was fiddling with making a fire. This was a great perspective on when this might tip the scales (literally) on a longer hike, especially when my wife is on the trail with me. Interested in hearing more experiences on your trail cooking!

      It also travels by air well. Restrictions are pretty draconian about liquid and gas fuel stoves in checked baggage.

    I've been looking at this as a lightweight way to go without having to carry a canister or fuel bottle all the time. I think a lot of peoplemwant get the gassification process started before they put the pot on and it then smokes. I think it has to reach a certain temp before that really starts working. Thanks for the information. Wondering if you still use this at all since it's been over a year.

    First off. You said instead of sending it back you paid for it. Well that's cool. But I thought people sent y'all stuff to review and you got to keep it or do a contest. Never new they wanted it back. But good little stove I like. Thanks for sharing. God bless

      Spiguyver Backpacking yea that's nice to be able to try and deside to buy and keep. Well your a good man there's alot of guys do reviews just to get free stuff but there's a few like you will buy there's your a good man that's why your blessed to get the ones free. Ide love to do reviews but the videos I make I'm not that good so I do life and talk about my fishing group. Or good deals I get to buy to give away to the kids. Then my blessing I get from awesome you tube men and wemon. But as for reviews no one would let me do that. But it's ok I love to watch y'all. Well you have a good weekend and keep having fun god bless.

    I have 1 of these stoves as well & a suggestion you could try ??
    Take either charcoal or wood pellets & do a water boil test.
    See which is better, just my suggestion for you.
    I never had a chance YET to try it out myself.

    Cool, I wasn't aware toaks made a stove. I think I prefer my Solo stove. It's not as light, it is lower profile though and the burn is impressive. Unfortunately I usually opt for my alcohol rig for multi day outings because of the soot factor with bio mass. Thanks

    Can this be used as a small fire, to keep warm. As well as a cook stove? I'm looking for a hiking stove. That can hold a fire, in colder weather. Or would you recommend another one?

    • @tinymetaltrees
      @tinymetaltrees 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Also search for “flatpack grill” videos to see a different style, not gassifying but might be more like a campfire. You might like them you might not. I don’t have one but it sounds like it might be like what you want. I dunno. Good luck!

    • @SpiguyverBackpacking1
      @SpiguyverBackpacking1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm sure it could, I'd be careful with it around a tarp or anything though.

    • @rowerowyja9982
      @rowerowyja9982 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Such a wood-burning stove is possible. It must have a suitable furnace and a combustion chamber, good chimney draft, regulated oxygen intake, walls without holes, a top-mounted extension - heat radiator / radiator / protection against sparks. It can be used under a tarp even in a closed configuration.

    I just bought the large one after having the small one for awhile. The large one fits super loose into the bottom piece though.... Kinda wobbly compared to the small one. Is yours like that also? Hard to tell in the video.

    • @SpiguyverBackpacking1
      @SpiguyverBackpacking1  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'll have to look again, but I don't recall anything being wobbly. I would recommend you reach out to Toaks and let them know what you're experiencing. Hope it works out for you!

    I notice that when I boil water in my Toaks 900ml pot with the Toaks solid fuel stove, the water tastes odd. A bit burnt tasting, as if the smoke from the wood somehow got into the water. This doesn't happen if I use an iso fuel, propane or regular kitchen gas stove. Is it just me?

    • @SpiguyverBackpacking1
      @SpiguyverBackpacking1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is strange. I can't say I notice that using any of mine.

    • @rowerowyja9982
      @rowerowyja9982 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes, it can be ... In partial pyrolysis, the output flame is more than 900 C. The metal then reacts more strongly with the water. There is no gasification of the fuel charge at the alcohol burner.

    • @HuyNguyen-lu3zj

      @@rowerowyja9982 Is this toxic?

    • @rowerowyja9982
      @rowerowyja9982 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@HuyNguyen-lu3zj Yes it can be...
      If you feel a strange taste - the only source may be water or the material the pot is made of. If the water is OK, you can feel the elements released from the material of the pot. The taste you feel should be neutral. Titanium is a mixture of very many elements ... with a very small percentage of the base element (Ti). There is min. 12 titanium alloys, of which 3 are offered for everyday civil use. Ti has a stable structure. But there is very little titanium in your pot ... How much ...? What's the specification of the material? Therefore, the surface of the pot has an additional visual masking coating. The higher the temperature, the more it affects the metal. Therefore, the metal must be appropriate. Wood stove: correct, it's high-alloy steel - heat-resistant, or titanium, but suitable. Utensils: correct, it's acid steel, or titanium, but appropriate.

    • @HuyNguyen-lu3zj
      @HuyNguyen-lu3zj 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@rowerowyja9982 So maybe I should keep the fire smaller so that it doesn't heat the pot so much? It will take longer to boil water, but at least I won't have toxic, bad tasting water.

    I like the idea of a wood stove, but at 7.9 oz it's heavier than my entire cook kit. :(
