I bought a Waypoint 35 which weighs 23oz in white. Did an Emily15 discount code from Hyperlite. My shakedown will be mid May 2024. Confident it will hold all I take on trail. I added some elastic cord through the anchor points on the big front pocket so I can stow my sit pad and jacket without taking room in the pockets or interior.
One of the few if not only "ultralight" packs you can get at REI, Try it for a year and see if you like it. I like the simplicity of the pack and available adjustments. Started off with ArcHaul and while I loved that pack, it had so many adjustments in the frame and suspension that it never felt the same when putting it on. My biggest con with the HMG is the hip belt adjustment, wish it pulled toward the front instead of to the back.
@yusaidit5311 I am very happy with my 2400 southwest. I have about 600 -700 miles on it. I have upgraded to the new Hyperlite unbound 40 pack. That is even a better pack than the SouthWest 2400. It's worth checking out.
I'd like to try one out without committing to a purchase to do so. I know a lot of people like them, it just seems like a large chunk of change to drop on blind faith.
I have a friend who hiked with me on two thru hikes and he swears by that pack. For me I am a Lite AF guy which I think is bombproof. My pack like yours does not have load lifters which I find odd for a framed pack. Happy Hiking Taylor
1. This pack is expensive, but worth it because it is durable and will last. 2. It is comfortable, but it does sit on your back so the sweat factor is real. 3. Never had this pack flood out in rainstorms 4. My complaint against HMG is that they moved their operations to Mexico. I had an OG southwest 2400 in black that was made in Maine. Their customer service has been sub par and had some fulfillment issues in the past. 5. HMG vs Zpacks Backpacks...which do you feel is better?
I'm just curious why people have issues where their packs are made when they were high dollar expensive clothing top name brands not made in america? Is it because it's mexico and not vietnam like the ghost whisperer jacket that's so popular on the trail? or bangladesh like many of the popular trail runners used on trail? Or India like countless popular clothing is made that is used on the trail? I'm really trying to figure out why people wearing these named brand clothes made in 14 plus different countries have such an issue with where HMG gear is made. Is like the people who state they hate columbia clothing company but wear Mountain Hardwear and prANA clothing which is owned by Columbia Sports Wear. I can't make it work in my head why these same folks (not saying you, but you did have issue with where it's made) wear foreign made clothing but complain about where HMG is made. I mean, Arc’teryx is not only made in china and other asian countries, but it isn't owned by the Canadians anymore as it was bought out some years ago by a Finish company which is now owned by a chinese company, which owns Soloman as well as some other major names brands, yet no one complains about paying $300 dollars or more for a chinese owned and made jacket. Go figure
Great vid. If anyone is considering a HMG bag. I bought the unbound 40 last year (40L main compartment + 15L outside pockets.) Got over the price real quick. Carries and packs better than my 60L from another reputable brand. Just another option to throw out there. Thanks for the vid
I have the unbound 40 as well in white and had the southwest 2400 in black and have the 3400 junction in white (more colder weather trips). love all three but find myself using the unbound more and more. I actually just sold the 2400 southwest earlier this week
I am an experienced BUSHCRAFT. Not a through hiker. But I have been lightening up my gear. ( tremendously ) I'm trying to be an ultralight bushcrafter. I've got my gear weight down to about 23 and 1/2 lb or so. As far as the backpack goes, I have been looking at these and thinking about ultralight backpacks. But as I said it will be for Bushcraft. For example, I will have my modified lightweight tomahawk. As well as ultralight fishing gear. So on and so on and so on. My question is do you believe the durability of this pack? Well stand up to what I'm going to use it for. Because it would be a pack for me if something was to happen in society. I could grab my gear head out to the mountains and survive. No I have the skills & knowledge and capabilities. I know that. I have the gear I know that. BUT IN AN ( SHTF ) Do you think this pack could hold up. To daily life in that situation ?
love my HMG 4400 Southwest. ive had it for a couple years now and it's rock solid. great for all 4 seasons. fits everything and nothing with that roll top closure.
Nice one Taylor! Not sure I'd argue against the durability of the pack. I think the problem most ppl have is the price tag for what it is. It's like Patagonia or any other premium brand. Charging you 3/4/5x for something that you can get much cheaper. The trick is to make the features justify the price. Not sure HMG has accomplished that. But users swear by them.
The only elephant in the room is that everyone condemns HMG for outsourcing to Mexico while paying $300 or more for jackets like Arc’teryx made and owned by a Chinese company and over $200 plus for a Ghost Whisper Jacket made in Vietnam and owned by Columbia Sportswear who most backpackers so they hate desperately. No one complains about $150 plus shoes owned and made in China or other Asian countries as well as other expensive clothing like Patagonia made in countless Asian countries or Big Agnes tents Nemo and REI tents and such made in China and other Asian countries. The elephant isn't where HMG is made, it's the fact that no one is talking about the high dollar apparel they're wearing made in the country they claim to hate the most, China. The elephant isn't where HMG is made, it's not talking about where all the other expensive gear is made and who it is actually owned by, much less the fact that Gregory as well as Osprey is made overseas as well.

Picked up my 2400 southwest from Rei. Used the 20 percent discount.
It’s does have a different way of adjustment. It took me time to get used to it! Ha
@@Ericidryfly Have you used it much? Any thoughts/criticisms?

I'm going to pull mine out of the closet and give it another chance this year.

Thanks for sharing man! I love my Arc Haul but I feel like over time it could have way more failure points. It’s comfortable though!

My answer to that is wait for the best deal. Their sales or REI 20% coupon!
