  • GoPro footage from the 2014 Spartan Ultra Beast in Killington, Vermont. This was a brutal, insane and amazing experience. If you're considering it next year, I'd suggest training for a 40 mile slog. This year it was 35% miles, with easily 15k feet of elevation gain / loss - based on the GPS reports floating around and the added fun they gave the Ultra runners).

Great footage man I pretty much forgot most of the obstacles there, I could use this footage now for reference. It took me 14 hours 11 minutes to complete it so its definitely doable but you need to train hard and perservere through this so good luck next year!

Much props on finishing that course! No matter how I describe it to folks, I don't think there's really any way to convey what parts of it were like (i.e. the double-bag carry that looked like a killing field).
Knee's almost healed and it didn't require surgery, so the Ultra Beast rematch is on for 2015... in Canada. It's closer and doesn't involve swimming. Will do Killington again in 2016. :)
Again, props to you and everyone who crushed it on that course.

Daniel Delfino hey awesome job. I've done a sprint, super , and beast. I'm going to do the 2016 ultra beast so i can prepare for it, how do you train for these? i always get huge muscle cramps everywhere in my legs like mile 7 no matter how i train or what i do to prevent them. how can i train to stop these. if this problem isn't solved for me i wouldt be able to finish the ultra beast.

      Hi Kyle,
Congratulations on the trifecta. I've heard a lot of theories about cramping strategies, but what works for me is a lot of 180 minute cardio sessions. Before the ultra last year I did a 6 hour session. Aside from the knee injury, the cardio prep was pretty good but I'm not sure there's a way to ever stop the cramping entirely. My quad and calve froze at the same time going up the double bag carry. From what I could tell, most of us just accepted that it would hurt.
Pickle juice and energy gels can work, but both take a few minutes. Anything after 5 hours though (for me at least) means I need to be careful about movements. Vertical leaps and odd ankle twists set off cramps for me. Everyone's different though.
Best advice I could offer would be to ask the people that do more of these. Most entertaining and informative blog I read is solovieva.com . This lady knows her stuff and is a true rock star. Another good one's the painted warrior's blog. He does really detailed reviews on these and has a good track record with the Ultra Beast.
Best of luck with the Ultra wherever you try it!

Daniel Delfino You should do a video for the Canada Ultra Beast to compare these 2. I'm thinking about doing the Lake Tahoe Ultra Beast this year but wearing a GoPro might be too cumbersome for 11 hours plus lol.

You see any people try to cheat? I've had a friend do the ultra beast in Ottawa and 3rd place guy was caught cheating, she he was DQ'd and my friend received the 3rd place.

Gene Strong Quite a few, but I looked up their bib #'s and didn't see that any finished. Sad thing about the cheaters is that they get a lot of press, but overwhelming majority (I'd say 9+ out of 10) come out there did it the right way.
Can't imagine what goes through a person's mind to cheat towards the end of a race like that. Living with that regret would be awful (i.e. the people in the Painted Warrior's post on lap 2 from last year).
Hopefully the question means you're angling for a muckle this year?

I'm aiming at taking on the ultra beast in Breckinridge or Vermont. Next year of course. Already got my trifecta and fill of races.
I would honestly rather not finish the course than cheat. I guess it's a mentality thing. Maybe people just hate doing the physical portion, so they just skip to get the medal and say they did it. It's like...you pay for it and why not do it all?

I did my first Spartan Sprint yesterday ! ( Stoneham, Qc 2016, june 4th ) ( me and my wife ) We are far from athletes and I am 20lbs overweight..... I did ALL my 30 burpees every obstacles I failed and Im damn proud of it :) Finished the sprint in 3h with my wife and all of our teams finished in about 1h30, haha.
I had to wait a lot for her but damn it was fun ! She wanted to abandon a few times and everytime I told her not to quit and keep going ( or to take a small break if needed ) she told me often to keep going without her, but I said no, Id stay with her until she finishes the race.
It was SO AMAZING.... We decided to enroll in the gym, and prepare for either another Sprint next year, or maybe try the Super if we dare ! :) Im aiming to get the Trifecta done.
Congrats on your Ultra beast, it gives us a little hope and something to dream about, we watched your video together !

HoboTango Glad you two enjoyed it, and congrats on finishing the course together. I went from fast food 5 nights a week, chain smoking and too much coffee to this sort of extreme endurance stuff over the course of three years. It's been amazing and I can't encourage you enough to keep up with it, definitely one of the better choices I ever made, and it's really fun. :)

Daniel Delfino Thanks :) Im hoping its going to be life changing for me too. Im more of a couch potato right now, I got rid of all my sins in the past ( apart from the couch potato one ), now I just need to get back into the athletic mood ! ;)
