- In the 1920s, a German plant breeder began the multi-decade process to produce the jostaberry - a pretty hybrid of two species of gooseberry and one species of blackcurrant. In this video, you’ll learn some of the interesting advantages of the hybrid jostaberry and how to successfully grow one in your garden.

I am growing 2 jostaberry bushes and have my first fruit set. I'm in between zone 5b to 6a I can tell you last year no fruit and my bushes barely survived in full sun. This year I moved the containers to a location next to my trees so they only receive morning sun fully and afternoon more dappled sun light and so far I must say it's much better. I have fruit on every limb every few inches. I've heard they are not too productive but I'm not seeing it. This is a good producer and worth putting in any berry orchard. I hope your venture into grow this bush give many good harvests.

I moved ours out into the sun for a week after making this video and it was such a mistake. It definitely doesn't tolerate full sun here, although generous watering seems to make a positive difference.
I'm really excited to make a follow up video next year; hopefully our results match yours =)
I had to laugh when you described yourself as rebellious and trying plants on the edge for your zone. That describes me perfectly when it comes to gardening. I live in zone three (Regina, SK) and I like to think I have a micro-climate in my garden which allows me to "live on that same edge". 😏
It's a risky sort of life we live, but that's just who we are ;)

Never heard of jostaberry but I live in Southern California zone 10. Ian happy to have blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, and goji berries. I live in a postage stamp size concrete lot, so I grow primarily in grow bags and elevated planters.

How are your gojis doing? Ours loved life in a grow bag but have really struggled since transplanting into the ground.
@@NextdoorHomestead I have mine in grow bags and they’re doing okay. Still learning how to care for them. Do you have any info to share about them? Acidic or base soil? Fertilizers? Most of my yard is concrete so I grow in elevated planters and grow bags.
@@ritagibson225 Neutral to slightly acidic with plenty of nutrients and a lighter soil. If you have a mix that works well for peppers, I think that would be great. They have done *horribly* in our clay soil FWIW so I think your grow bag garden is a good spot for them =)
I have two I planted 3 years ago, finally got fruit this year. We're in zone 5 but it's been hot and dry for most of the three most recent Spring/Summers.
I get ya on the rebel attitude, I planted peanuts and yams this year just to see if I could do it.
Oooo, how are the peanuts doing? I'd love to try that. Gotta experiment or we'd just be growing the same thing for decades =)

@@patriotoftruth8542 I feel like I merely broke even, peanuts planted vs. peanuts harvested. I'm going to try again this year in a better spot, more seeds, raised bed in a low tunnel. I'll sprout them starting with soaking them tomorrow.

i live southern california in 9b\10a super hot dry summers. i have to water twice a day if its windy. surprised that the jostaberry plant didn't die. its been a year & have it against a northern exposer wall shade spot
Super hot area here too. Ours is very happy in the shade as well... If it gets enough water.

My Jostaberry bush grew well last year after having slow growth for maybe 3 years. When young I think I transplanted it twice as it took long time to get growing so I gave it full sun. It is now about 4 foot tall and wide and encroaching upon space for a Cornus kousa 'Satomi' (dogwood) I had to plant about 3 feet from the Jostaberry (there were strange reasons for this). So now I want to transplant the Jostaberry a further 3-4 feet away from the Cornus. Since it is big now I am a bit concerned about how well the Jostaberry will go with another transplant. You mentioned the roots were deep and that is fine I can dig deep. But I am wondering how it will go transplanting it now as a mature Jostaberry - any ideas???? I am in Australia, down south in Tasmania, so it is very dry summer with long days. Plan to transplant in late winter/early spring when the plant is dormant but still concerned about how it will go.

I wouldn't have described the blackcurrant as tart and the gooseberry sweet. Exactly the opposite.
I planted one here in GA (7B) as I was interested in growing Currant after trying some in Europe, also Gooseberry. Initially I saw a lot of growth in a pot, but it slowed down since I moved it out of pot to a shaded area ( I think due to poor nutrition in the soil there). This year, I took some cutting from her and hoping to try them in a different area with little more sun and better soil chemistry (also help with nutrients).
I’m curious have you tasted red vs black jostaberry ?

I have not unfortunately no. I'm keeping an eye out for varieties other than the classic Josta though as I'd like to see how they compare in growth habits.

Can definitely go straight into the ground! Better to do so in fact 😁. We are using a container for now to test out the plant in our hot climate. Cheers!

I can confirm that they are not as fruitful as a gooseberry. My 2 year old jostaberry produced no flowers or fruit this year. I also have a 2 year old Orus 8 jostaberry which has fruit and plenty of thorns. I have several other 2 year old gooseberries that are covered in fruit. Too early for me to have opinions about the quality of the fruit.
Really appreciate the report. Ours is struggling as expected in the heat a bit but growing nicely. Will make a follow-up video in a year 😁
