@@joseconchas9757 recognition from mainstream audiences doesn't mean the mainstream industry has anything to do with you. They're not one and the same.
The song is titled "Since I Left You" and after reading the title that's what you will think you're hearing in the chorus. The actual sample they are using is saying "Since I Met You" and you can hear that in the song once you know what you're looking for. I think it's a beautiful metaphor about relationships that shows it's really about how you choose to see it (or hear it in this case). Whether you hear "Left you" to "Met You" can change the whole meaning of the song and you can trick your brain into thinking whichever one you want is the truth.
The song barely has three lines of lyrics yet it makes me happy, it makes me want to cry, it makes me feel in love yet heartbroken, so many strong emotions. This album is pure art and a masterpiece, one of my favorite albums of all time.
I love how the Avalanches make such compelling stories in their music videos. I love how the lyrical duality between “Since I Met You” and “Since I Left You” is represented in both Miners, who both end up losing each other but ultimately (seem to) gain a greater happiness in doing so. It’s so tragic, yet so uplifting.
Haven’t seen it but the 9 samples that make up this song are: Everyday by Main Attraction, Anema E Core by Tony Mottola, Sky’s the limit by The Duprees, Lets do the Latin hustle by Klaus Wunderlich, Take Off Your Makeup by Lamont Dozier, By the time I get to Phoenix by Tony Mottola, Welcome to Paradise by Club Med, Daddy Rich by Rose Royce, and Younger Than Springtime by Charles K.L Davis

Melanie, you are so so right. After over 1,000 views I cannot fault this video. As you say, it is perfect. There was another video done originally - something with synchronised swimming. Glad it was not used.
I'm not one to cry over a music video, or any kind of cinematography for that matter. But I just couldn't stop the tears from flowing down my cheeks. They just kept coming. What a beautiful song.
I’ve always loved the interpretation that Arthur was dancing for a spot in heaven and he was being judged on whether he would get into paradise or not. On top of that I like the ambiguity between “since I left you” and “since I met you” because he’s starting a new chapter and also leaving a dear friend behind.
Both interpretations are completely valid. Art is made for the individual to find meaning in. I feel that the loss of a loved one is the most accurate for me. Edit: my opinion of it portraying the loss of a loved one leads it to be a visual representation of his grieving process after the accident that killed Arthur. He keeps a pet budgie as a reminder of his best friend too.
I feel like this video represents the final words between two friends. They are both trapped in the mine and the guy with the mustache, Arthur, is dying. (I'm pretty sure thats what the guy said his name was at the end.) His friend is talking him through it, trying to calm him down. Arthur talks about his life-long dream to be a dancer, and his friend tells him to imagine getting out of this place to live that dream. So they imagine it together as he passes. He imagines dancing with (possibly) the woman of his dreams and being applauded by the judges. The reason why I think his friend isn't dancing along is because he's having a hard time accepting Arthur's death. He just stays by his friend's side, holding a tambourine. When he stands and begins to play, I think it represents his friends love and acceptance. That's what I got from it at least, and I'm sure I'm not the first one. Beautiful music video either way :-)
This is one of the most beautiful video I’ve ever watched. Reminds me of a time I was in my shell and my friends grandmother pushed me to go have fun and I did. She has passed on and I think of her when I watch this.
wow, this elicited an emotional response i was not prepared for, never have i had a music video actually make me spontaneously break into tears. excellent
good to read that although I am 70 and watched this video a zillion times, I still get goosebumps - and I am not the only one . The tingle just won't go away. Always love Ascher Keddie and her cool precise moves as the dancer. I cannot get enough.
I think this is one of the most beautiful music videos I've ever seen and it's made me cry multiple times now. I've been that kid on the side of the dance floor, wishing I was out there but too scared to move, and I think now of all the opportunities I might have had if I had just decided - been able to - get out there and forget my self-consciousness. I identify with tambourine guy but I wish I could be the dancers.
This is not about life and death or passing through the afterlife. For me, it is about the lost opportunities to become happy and do whatever you like or, otherwise, keep standing on the edge of wanting to do it however, being too shy or reluctant even to try it. This song used to make me cry, but now I smile.
I find the interpretation of this being Arthur’s passage to afterlife thought provoking-and probably right-but I did read a quote from the Director of the video, who stated what you just did; it’s about going for something when you have your chance.
This video will get you intrigued and happy with its song tone and it's dancing miner and then all of a sudden at the LAST 30 SECONDS IT RIPS YOUR HEART OUT AND STOMPS ON IT IN FRONT OF YOUR MOTHER

My mom just passed on the 28th an I’ve pictured her dancing ever since she suffered from COPD for several years and she’s free to breath deep ass breaths from dancing and having a great time enjoying being able to dance an move an he’ll walk without oxygen tube up her nose an not having to stop to get her breath loosing her is by far the most soul rocker I’ve ever had an I’ve lost so many loved ones but never MY MOM God rest her soul as to your mom an I’m sending you peace ☮️ my friend in grief
@@1fastbitch434 They're literally miners. Pretty sure Arthur died from the Black Damp when they were stuck in the mines and what they saw was a hallucination before his death. Arthur accepted it, his friend stayed behind.
No music gets worse as you get older. This is a scientific fact. The best music was when you were between 15 and 25 years of age. There are many radio stations proving this fact.
I have to say this is the most meaningful music video I’ve ever seen, most music videos are total nonsense but this one holds a sad/heartwarming backstory to it that reaches deep into the soul.

It’s amazing how not only this is one of the greatest songs of all time (feels like a love letter to music itself with all its samples) it’s also the best music video out there.
i remember seing this video as a teenager at mtv russia back in the beginning of the 2000s and it gave me shivers. im 41 now but i still cant stop tears coming to my eyes whenever i see this. a masterpiece
Well I stumbled on this and watched it all the way through. It’s probably the best and most moving video I’ve seen. The ending reminds me of a lifelong friend I lost recently. I’m 74 and I can’t believe this eluded me for 21 years. Thanks for posting it up.
Half the comments interpret this video as being "chances we never took" and half interpret it as "Our final comforting thoughts before death" and I consider them both valid.
It’s both, I think. And of using your talent, that may go hidden under what we do as work for money (maybe Arthur had a talent for dancing but never used it) and now he’s finally able to take those chances he never took in life, in the afterlife. Which kind of means (from this video) that anyone who doesn’t use their talent on earth will get to use it somehow in Paradise, being able to do something they love forever without worrying about having to make a living instead. It’s a comforting thought - that, say, someone who is dying is like “I wanted to be a painter, but I never got time because I worked a really hard job”, will get to paint all they want in paradise without worrying about having to work, if that makes sense.
I still rate this as my all time greatest music video. Not only is the track great, but it just seems to give me this emotional whack that few others do. And that blond is divine.
I had this song on repeat with my mom while cleaning her deceased parents house, getting ready to rent it out. A few weeks later there were horrific wildfires that took the newly cleaned/organized house and the house next door where my mom and I lived. Hardest thing was losing pets I've had since I was a child. I haven't heard this song since oct 2017 and I thought it would be depressing but that's just impossible. Love this song.
my take on it was the female dancers are straight up death. He goes nearer and nearer as he is dying. At the end of his performance he strait up died. His friend, the shy one was further away from death and did not dance with them, just sat on the sideline...
-> I agree. There is a quick glimpse of “crosses” on the back of the chairs when they are placed down. Also - I think the very ending is telling of what really went down: the miner’s were buried and trapped on the verge of dying saw a vision of God before being rescued.
coming back at this now, after listening the song a couple of times I'd probably do like the guy in the end and not participate in the "dance" or whatever it's supposed to mean (I think it's related to dying or risking everything for happiness, something along those lines)
I have so much affection for this song. I passed the good taste in music baton on. My eldest son went to a gig you did in Manchester, I think you were going on to Glastonbury. He sent a clip of this live as he know how much this song means to me., 🕊💌
This video gets to me pretty hard, as I spent the first half of my life being, basically, that miner who stayed behind. I like to think I'm more like the other one nowadays, but I'll always be haunted by the opportunities not taken, the dreams unpursued. Sure, I can chase some of 'em now, and I am. But others... well, sometimes there *is* such a thing as too late. If you're young and you have dreams, chase the shit out of them. This is the time to do it. Believe me.
One of the greatest songs - and albums - ever made. Zero hyperbole on my part there too, I mean it. This... this is art. And an incredible music video to match. The mix of emotions and their intensity is... unlike any other.

@@ccjones813 Thank you - I truly feel your loss.. Sending comfort from your friend in grief.....
Losing his mom ain't easy. Love to you both.
Let everything happen to you

so Sorry for your Loss! :( D:
I'm sorry you lost your mom.
we only need ourselves, this song, and then we keep living 💞
This feels like a big metaphor for accepting death, and it never fails to make me incredibly sad and hopeful.
Yeah, well you're wrong. It represents not being able to just let go and follow your passion. To feel inhibited.
You're welcome.
@@1fastbitch434 both, you are right :)
It represents not be afraid of something new and belive in the power of new beginings x
@@1fastbitch434 They're literally miners. Pretty sure Arthur died from the Black Damp when they were stuck in the mines and what they saw was a hallucination before his death. Arthur accepted it, his friend stayed behind.
1 Fast Bitch Your passion is to be a nasty person? You have no idea what life is for.
We are entering into another decade and I hope such music comes back to mainstream.
Who cares? Just listen to good music, regardless of how popular it is :)
No music gets worse as you get older. This is a scientific fact. The best music was when you were between 15 and 25 years of age.
There are many radio stations proving this fact.
@@kdegraa Well said.
@@kdegraa what are you talking about
c ? As you get older, the best music is what you listened too earlier in life.
I have to say this is the most meaningful music video I’ve ever seen, most music videos are total nonsense but this one holds a sad/heartwarming backstory to it that reaches deep into the soul.
Wow! I was mot expecting that! Beautifully done!
Simple concept executed perfectly. And I'd forgotten about that look the blonde gives him. Didn't realise I'd been chasing that look since.
Ugh, I know right. So beautiful and genuine
Took me 56 years but I found it. Don't give up.
Years later and this song still hits me in the guts, without doubt one of the best songs I’ve ever heard. I adore it. ❤️
Aw man.....this song and video are a masterpiece, but the last 10 seconds made sure all the feels hit all at once....wow.
Loved this song and this video depiction for 14 years.
Still one of my fave songs of all time
have to agŕee. will never qùite sort this video out - but does it matter. Asher Keddie - ballerina - is just so so good. tragic she hurt her knee. could watch this forever.
It’s been 22 years and I still remember this brilliant tune and the video. What a masterpiece! Love it a lot.

Yep time to change your canary
Makes this music video even cooler
@@leobianchi1692 Para nada, si ves la escena final el amigo dice q' despuès de 2 dìas lo rescataron (ellos estaban atrapados en la mina), y nunca màs lo volviò a ver a donde sea q' haya ido...

¨Tres días después me rescataron, y no volví a ver a Arthur otra vez. No se a donde habrá ido a parar pero se que esta pasándoselo fenomenal.¨
Discovered this song 3 years ago but never really gave it enough attention till I dreamt of it, and i must say, since i met them, i find the world so new 🙏🏾
you're late
OMFG I FORGOT THIS EXISTED!!! I was a kid when this was released and haven't thought about it since. Hearing it again has made me smile!
It’s amazing how not only this is one of the greatest songs of all time (feels like a love letter to music itself with all its samples) it’s also the best music video out there.
No other music video makes me tear up as much as this one

Oh Arthur 🎉🤯🥳
i remember seing this video as a teenager at mtv russia back in the beginning of the 2000s and it gave me shivers. im 41 now but i still cant stop tears coming to my eyes whenever i see this. a masterpiece
тоже слезу пустил :,(
Credit to the avalanches as they wonder either best song or best video at the awards. Same year of release
This song is the perfect introduction to the most perfect album there ever was
Well I stumbled on this and watched it all the way through. It’s probably the best and most moving video I’ve seen. The ending reminds me of a lifelong friend I lost recently. I’m 74 and I can’t believe this eluded me for 21 years. Thanks for posting it up.
I’m seriously Ill and haven’t smiled for a long time. This did it. ❤
One of those songs that is a nice enough song by itself, but the video raises it to another level. Every time I hear it, it's just a great song now.
Half the comments interpret this video as being "chances we never took" and half interpret it as "Our final comforting thoughts before death" and I consider them both valid.
I prefer chances we never took... We only live once so how many chance we have in The life?
Music is open to your interpretation of it.
However, I agree it's about letting go and following your passion,.not death.
It’s a comforting thought - that, say, someone who is dying is like “I wanted to be a painter, but I never got time because I worked a really hard job”, will get to paint all they want in paradise without worrying about having to work, if that makes sense.
they aren't mutually exclusive

This is the music my heart needs right now.
I've watched this show through the years and, everytime I watch, it seems they all haven't aged a bit. Just timeless.
I still rate this as my all time greatest music video. Not only is the track great, but it just seems to give me this emotional whack that few others do. And that blond is divine.
Totally agree. It’s truly magical.
i am crying literally the best thing ever
This song makes me cry every time, such a beautiful song and video. Even more poignant since my dad passed 😢
The world needs more music like this! LOVE IT!!
💜
This is a metaphor for heaven. The dancers are angels helping the man gain entry. The judges are saints.
Beautiful analogy 🙏🏼
I think it's more than entry to heaven.
I think because the way he lived life as well. His dancing shows his personality.
my take on it was the female dancers are straight up death. He goes nearer and nearer as he is dying. At the end of his performance he strait up died. His friend, the shy one was further away from death and did not dance with them, just sat on the sideline...
My guy, yours is the best comment on this video.@@booombasa
-> I agree. There is a quick glimpse of “crosses” on the back of the chairs when they are placed down. Also - I think the very ending is telling of what really went down: the miner’s were buried and trapped on the verge of dying saw a vision of God before being rescued.
Still the most beautiful music video I've ever seen. Before or since.
that ending made me so sad, everything in this video was awesome, I'm glad I got to know about the avalanches
coming back at this now, after listening the song a couple of times I'd probably do like the guy in the end and not participate in the "dance" or whatever it's supposed to mean (I think it's related to dying or risking everything for happiness, something along those lines)
The Avalanches might as well make a movie, every time I watch one of their music videos I'm blown away by their presentation.
Now this is a Masterpiece.
This video always brings me close to tears. Then I see it again a year after, and then the one after that, and keeps its power. Never gets old.
God I love this song. These are easily the best Aussie band of all time,it's beautiful, proper emotional. 👍😘🏴💛💚💛
This is an absolutely beautiful song and video.
I have so much affection for this song. I passed the good taste in music baton on. My eldest son went to a gig you did in Manchester, I think you were going on to Glastonbury. He sent a clip of this live as he know how much this song means to me., 🕊💌
Beautiful in every way.
Believe me.
My Father once told me - son, just do it,- afterwoods you'll have enough time to regret it..
Just strive to be the one who ends up in the color world :), not like the other... Your life will be full of surprises my friend...
Why'd you have to go and kick me right in the feels?
Finally someone that gets the video!!!!!
For a second there I thought you said 'this video gets me pretty hard' and was quite confused
One of the greatest songs - and albums - ever made. Zero hyperbole on my part there too, I mean it. This... this is art.
And an incredible music video to match. The mix of emotions and their intensity is... unlike any other.
Подписываюсь под каждым словом!!!!!!!!!!!
It's like this song was always there, waiting in-between the records
WEll..THANKS FOR SHARING IT WITH THE WORLD...DO DOPE🦋💪🏾🇨🇺🇵🇷🥰
Thats word
One of my favourite songs ever ... 😢😢😢😢😢😢
I love this comment
That was such a beautiful comment
Fantastic video. I've only just discovered these guys and on the strength of this and Frontier Psychiatrist I bought the album with those two tracks on. No regrets!
I'd never cried watching a music video. This is insanely beautiful ❤❤❤❤❤
