The one thing I see that's important is this hay is being cut early in the morning and a Haybine cycle bar will not cut good in damp grass/hay. Now a diskbine will cut better in damp conditions like I see in this video. This is not a fair comparison between the two systems. Just my 2 cents . Bandit

It was cut in late August in the evening and the dew sets in heavy and early in the evening

I can hear my dad yelling at me all over again for missing all that hay on the corners.

Video speed looked different, fast for discbine slow or normal on haybine not to mention the grass will recover and grow back faster from a sickle cut. If field is uneven speed with discbine will be reduced as well as adding ash content to the hay. Each machine has a place but it's not as cut and dry as this video looks

Not a fair comparison, put both machines into a field of Lucerne and see which machine gets the hay cured in less time, because of more even conditioning and which field recovers quicker. i `ve owned both types and for crop stand longevity the sickle type is by far the better other than in wet tangled material maybe.

Not a real comparison whatsoever. The sickle in the haybine was in severe disrepair. Right side wasn't even cutting, and the center was probably not cutting and therefore dragging, causing the wrapping issue around the reel. Those machines can sail right through that light grass and work excellent. Worked on many of those. Not impressed with this.

A good discbine operator doesn’t miss hay in a turn

Ive had a 9 ft discbine now for 10 years.... trap the gophers and you can move at 18 mph... provided its a long field ....or you will need to keep shifting down to make the corners....and never regain the speed before the end of the field. Cuts the same at any speed... right after a rain or bone dry. Problem is....most people buy a discbine with the idea they dont have to trap or remove the gophers. Either way.... haybine or discbine gophers destroy your back and equipment ! With my 9 ft discbine I can cut 20 acres in 2 and a half hours no problem !

That video looked staged to me , my dad would cut 100 acres a day with a haybine and depending on how close the field was may get another 15 to twenty acres in if we didn't have any maintenance or repairs.

Do miss cutting hay with haybine. We would never get done making hay now a days.

Put that Discbine in a 4 foot crop of oats and see what type of mess it will leave behind, a sickle haybine with a reel will do a far better job, sure its slower, but you dont grow crops to leave half of it in the field like a Discbine does. Been there and done it .

Well.......were there shim/ spacers between the rolls on the disc bine your relating to ? They can be shimmed 2 inches open....or more. Then.......how fast were you moving ? Ive cut hay with my discbine at 20 miles per hour.....does a great job...only issue is the turns....having to gear down and back up.
More over... many farmers that had hay bines had spacer/ shims in their haybine from the day they had it. Seen 5 haybines at sale this last year. The shims were rusted in ! With that......your back to using the old sickle mower with no conditioning with the rolls . Farmers had no idea why the hay never dried !
They came from the factory with shims...later they bolted the shims along side of the frame where they should stay unless your doing oats.

I go faster than that with a haybine and around here(Ky) the fields are usually too rough to go that fast with a discbine.

jproffittky oh man I hear ya. I cut with a disc mower. Hopefully I can get a 1411 or something like that soon. KY fields suck lol

I would never run a piece of equipment as fast as the diskbine here, its not sensible to do so, at the same time the haybine is almost running backwards. Must be very poor maintenance to need to run it that way. Unless of course its all staged which it is.

    • @Cake41579
      @Cake41579 ปีที่แล้ว

Umm. I have been running my disc mower sometimes twice as fast as seen here for almost 30 years. Never give me a minutes trouble. Times have changed pawpaw.

someone that wanted to get the job done, was running the discbine, and grandpa who wanted to enjoy his time in the the field, was running the haybine. ( who sets the windrow that narrow? it will take forever to dry ). and how about, when it's time to show the haybine working, we go check out the tree farm instead. I didn't see any kind of comparison what so ever.

  • @oby-1607

We went discbine and never looked back at the sickle type swather. I would fire the operator here for leaving all that hay in the corners. No excuse for that. I guess it was going so fast, he couldn't control the tractor in the corners. Maybe the haybine will pick up his slack.

Start with smooth field..maintain it.........trap the gophers in the field ....road ditches and fence lines.....and there will be no coyotes...badgers... ground squirrels ......each feed off of the other. You will have a highway instead of a mine field ! Discbines....move !

Im in Ireland. I ve used an MF 60 sicklebar.
Much slower than a drum or disc mower. But if in goid order it will do an acre an hour for sure. Possibly more.
That haybine.... no that yoke not working.

The neighbor has a discbine it's much much faster than any haybine,I swear it looks like he's going 20 mphwith it! It's a huge machine most cut a 16 or 20 foot wide swath of hay he uses an international 1456 tractor to pull it he also said you need at least a 100 horsepower tractor on it they make a lot of hay both round bales mostly but also square bales he sales somewhere down in North Carolina for horse hay ,Timothy mostly!

  • @jerrylansbury9558

Should be able to move at 7 miles per hour with a haybine. This haybine has issues ! Might need new sickle and guards ! Disc bines..... any speed you can stay on the seat. Issue is.......slowing to turn......then gearing back up. Ive cut hay at 20 miles per hour....no problems !

  • @countryflyer4536

I use a old NH 488 I can cut twice that fast, need to match your ground speed close to your reel speed !! 5-7 mph in tall heavy under growth grass....

Discbine can also run over already cut hay, tangled/down grass and is far less likely to clog up. The only reason to get a haybine is if you don't have enough tractor to pull a discbine. Time wasted on a haybine could be put to use doing something else, so that value should not be overlooked.

valleyfarm not likely. Our mower conditioners is the same size and it needs minimum 35 hp at pto to even think of cutting decent grass however we run 45 or 55hp depending. Get a nice little disc mower or sickle bar. Youll be slower but for a sub 10 acre field youll be fine.
