  • It was a big episode of the GCP this week as the party encountered Kaneepo the Slim. Troy and Joe talk through what goes into prepping a villain's big moment in the story and get into the blow by blow mechanics of the toughest fight the party has encountered yet. In We Are Stupid, a look back into optional rules from over 40 years ago, how the Remaster has updated Stances, and a huge upgrade to the Interact Action. In Listener Mail, a fantastic message from an International member of the Naish results in Troy recommending a permanent ban on a player!

I have to mention percent vs. percentage point here. 1 percent better each day means you're over 3500 % better after one year. The second day's percent is worth more since it's also increasing that first day's percent!

loved the cannon fodder this week. especially when talking about kaneepo the slim. my thoughts on that fight were that the party especially the monk should be using trip and grapple as a many way to deal with bosses.
Pathfinder is a game of action economy.
if you think about it logically the boss only has 3 actions and the party has 12 (if running 4 as per expected) and if you use a trip you are removing the action economy from the boss as the boss has to stand up wasting an action. which in turn decreases the chances of that boss downing someone else.
also if you think in terms of action ecnomy you start to get very strategic in terms of trying to get the boss to waste actions to chase you.
grappling is very good too because it forces casters to do a dc5 flat check to see if their spells go off. also tripping and then grappling means they cant stand up because standing up is a move action and grappling makes you immobilised.
My players do this to me all the time. once they figured this out it forces the gm to go a bit harder with more creatures and better tactics.
    Hope that helps.

The bits about knowing/playing the rules really resonated with me. I don't play Pathfinder, but I've listened since Campaign 1. Finally ordered my first players core lastnight because of you guys. 👍

I'm ashamed to admit, I'm one of those folks who dropped out of Time for Chaos at the Peru arc. In my defense, I am really excited for StarFinder 2e, so I am now 26 eps into Androids and Aliens (only 135 eps to go!) and loving it, but I'll come back to Time for Chaos when I can.
But after listening to Jordie in Get in the Trunk, Buggles in Gatewalkers, and Dr. Kundatu Friss in Androids and Aliens, I'm now a HUGE fan of Skid Mahr. Oh. My. Skid, you RULE.
Much love to the whole GCP. Thanks for being amazing.

Season one TFC prequel, the Peru Story, was a perfectly constructed, draw-you-in, brick-by-brick, full-arc, self-contained horror story done right. I loved every second of it. However, the difference in story style of Season one Proper didn't turn me off of it in any way. I will say the player's comfort with each other and their characters does change the feel of season 2. And RAMP UP the anxiety at the increasing probability of a fatality. Great stuff. Totally addicted.

I used to be an assistant coach for a little league team for five years. My friend, the head coach, used to tell all the kids every season that baseball is a game designed to make you fail. There is no other job where you can do something 30% of the time and be considered an all-time great. You get a 30% in a class at school and you fail, you get a hit 30% of the time you are at the plate and you are doing great.

Quick rules check for Joe at 35:20 - my understanding from Archive of Nethys is that you can recharge your spellstrike as a single action with the concentrate trait - as well as by using a Magus focus/conflux spell.

Didn't know where else to put this comment since I'm listening on a podcast app, but S4ep4 Legacy of the Ancients - the scene where Joe's character wakes everyone up. Good friggin' golly, had me rolling laughing. When this crew just sits around and plays off of each other, there isn't anything better. It makes me realize I need to allow room for these things to happen in my own game. I'm running Age of Ashes and I think I'm spending so much energy thinking about the next encounter, the next area, what leads I need to get across, etc; but I'm not creating space to allow my players these chances to just interact with each other. Some of the most fun moments are when they're with random NPCs, but the idea of that happening always stresses me out because I feel like I don't know how to prepare for that.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. Dimensional Assault allows you to teleport half your speed. Unless Sydney has 50ft of move speed, she shouldn't be able to teleport that far. Even with Arcade Cascade Stance, she is wearing armor, so she would only get an additional 5ft of move speed. Even if she took Fleet as a General Feat she would only have 35ft of move speed; which would only allow her to teleport 15ft max.

Eric's wording seems poor when talking about incapacitation, but that may be from truncating or paraphrasing his words. Specifically, I mean failing to clarify how Incapacitation affects spells differently to abilities. (Though I recall Joe bringing it up before in game)
The gang seems to forget that for spells the creature needs to be more than double the spells level. So at level 5 a spell rank 3 Incapacitation spell still hits level 6 creatures fine.

    • @OpenGrapevine
      @OpenGrapevine 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

I definitely wrote that note a little quickly; I'll try to be more precise next time it comes up, but I was mainly trying to highlight that they need to remember that Incapacitation is conditional, not always applied.

I just want to make this note for Troy and Joe because I think they are confusing themselves on Legacy content. All content that isn't from one of the (currently 3) released remaster books is marked as Legacy in Archives of Nethys. This should still be legal, otherwise you are limiting the available content for play to less than was available at the launch of 2e. AoN will, by default, take you to the remaster page if there is one, otherwise assume all Legacy content is fine. To ignore all "legacy" content would be to lose out on many great books, from the early Lost Omen's Gods and Magic to still recent books like Secrets of Magic and Book of the Dead. Playing Remaster only would be like playing Core rulebook only in 1e.
Obviously its your game and you should do what you feel is best, but I do strongly believe a vast majority of the community is only replacing core rulebook/advanced player's guide rules and classes, and otherwise running with a permissive stance on everything. I've been running it that way and I can promise there is effectively no balance issues there. Food for thought, love you guys!

I was under the impression that all of us GMs fudged rolls for the sake of the story/suspense. I just never admit to it, because that’s akin to posting TH-cam videos showing how magic tricks work.

In the past I had people who wanted to come back as the same character that died in another game have all stats reduced by one indicating that as a copy of another soul that has passed they were a little less each time until stats were too low to come back. People got alot more creative about new characters.

I try not to let rules slips bother me in live-plays, but I really appreciate the idea of putting in more effort to learn the rules well by the cast. One of my favorite live play groups, Canada's own Dungeon Dudes, really make their LPs stand out by having a mix of great RP, and fairly real "at the table experience", and knowing the rules and taking on big challenges with well optimized characters. GCN has the real table feel and great RP, PLUS amazing table humor. I really think adding effortless rules mastery could elevate things even further!
