I always bring my knitting whether I use it or not. I do knit in all professional conferences because I listen better like Pam. If it is a small workshop, then I ask permission. But no one has ever denied me.
I think it is totally ok to knit "in company"! I know I've read that studies show that you can actually focus better to a meeting or a conversation while you are knitting. I did once have a woman in my book club scold me for knitting during the meeting and I was shocked. She was offended that I wasn't listening to her but it is totally not true...I was just doing stockinette...no pattern...just knitting around. I haven't brought knitting to that book club again but I'm still annoyed about it. I enjoyed "Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow" too.
I commuted on the LIRR to NYC for almost 40 years and was always involved with yarn crafts. I made lifelong friends discussing my projects. People were always curious and wanted to share their work as well. One male friend thanked me for helping him fall asleep each night to the rhythm of my knitting! I take my knitting everywhere I go. You never know when a knitting opportunity may arise.
I think the Emily Giffin books could be great audio knit and stitch books. I agree about feeling weird when knitting around people but we shouldn't. What if we told all our company to leave their phones at the door instead of keep them during our outings. It's the same to me. Haha! We should feel comfortable knitting. Missed you gals~ have a great week! Kimberly
If I didnt knit at a gathering I would just be thinking about it and not giving my full attention. Its better for all if Im knitting. Haha. Welcome back! More patterns to add to the never ending list!
i have anxiety in social settings, and my knitting keeps me calm, non knitters don't realize we can hear 100% of conversation and knit. do not tell me to not knit. thank you both for another fun, engaging and informative podcast.
So happy to see you ladies back!! I have no problem with knitting in public, but I can only do very simple stockinette stitch, or I mess up. I can’t knit outside when it’s hot. Years ago I was in a big medical meeting, and my yarn fell and the ball rolled right up to the dais, that was very embarrassing.
Thank you for the podcast -- relief from melting in Vegas --117! I loved Zevin's Tomorrow, Tomorrow, Tomorrow! My students bring knitting to class, and they focus and learn! People don't realize that knitting helps people focus.
My opinion - People who knit during meetings are the same as people who doodle on paper during meetings. This can be very calming and help with concentration.
I knit everywhere but restaurants. If someone told me I could not, I would pull it out and get knitting! I can listen and talk so much better if I am knitting…
Had to pause to respond to your knit in public question. I do knit if I’m out, I usually reserve sock that I can knit without focusing. I did attend a lecture and the instructor asked if I was going to knit and made a point of saying please do you actually focus better. Great podcast ladies
I think the man saying no knitting today is because he sees the wife knitting all the time. Mine thinks that is all I do is knit but everything else gets done. You could be right that he thinks you’re not taking part if knitting. We are awesome at multi-tasking.
As usual such an enjoyable episode. I knit whenever and wherever I can, never have a problem concentrating but i usually keep very easy projects for any not at home knitting. I have already purchased the jethro and have yarn at the ready for it. The shawl with star looks so cool and I love your color combos.
I just love ❤your podcast: The knitting inspiration, chats about your life and just listening to you speaking English (I teach high school English in Denmark and once lived in Queens, NY for a while) 😀 In Denmark it is quite common to see people knit in public and I knit everywhere: during meetings and breaks, in the car and also when socializing... A Danish psychologist Anne Kirketerp is working with craft psychology and is advocating the mental health benefits of knitting and crafting in general.
Thank you ladies for sharing your life and knitting! I knit in public and I listen to audible. My recommendations are The Ruby Brooch and the next 12 books in the series! They will someday be made into movies I bet! They are written by Katherine Lowery Logan. I have listened to books for many years and have never in my life listened to anything like these books!! Thank you ladies!
I've never knit in church but I know many who do and that's fine. I think there can be respect with both parties in the situation. But I think it would have been OK to gently explain you didn't have time to knit during the week and that's how you wanted to celebrate "your freedom" lol. I do understand some people might not understand how much you can pay attention while knitting and they want your full attention. I guess it might seem like those who get on their phone while in a group of people. It's not the same depending on the project but it looks the same to outsiders.
My friends and family know I knit. I bring it always. Simple pattern. I have memorized. I would laugh it off. I would still knit. I wouldn’t go back. Knitting keeps me calm and grounded. I would engage in conversation more if I was knitting.
I love to knit and listen to Audible. If someone told me I could not knit at a party I would probably leave. Of course I would talk privately to the person who told me not to and explain people can do both.
I have no problem knitting in public. I get together with my neighbors, very good friends, that don’t knit, but they have no problem with me knitting as we sit and chat. I also have a large group of friends who are avid knitters and we meet up once a month for lunch or coffee and we all knit, except while eating. If I’m going to someone’s house who is not a knitter, I’ll bring my knitting but most likely won’t touch it. I feel better knowing it’s there. When I was teaching, I always knitted for a few minutes on my lunch break just to settle me down. I can’t even think about what life would be like without my knitting. I usually have an audio and hard cover book going. The audio is mostly while walking or driving and the hard copy is for home. So many great books. I recently listened to Doris Kearns Goodwin’s newest book, An Unfinished Love Affair, which she narrated. Highly recommend. It’s about the years from the 50’s-60’s when her husband worked for the kennedy and LBJ administrations as a speech writier and policy advisor. Loved it. Recently read The Women by Kristin Hannah and could not put it down. Good to see you both again.
Knitting actually keeps me focused rather than day dreaming - non- knitters don’t understand how we can be engaged in a conversation and knit at the same time. I guess watching knitting podcasts or listening to audio books while knitting makes us good multitaskers! ( Being a mother is the ultimate training 😂)
I always take my knitting were I go, I'm a great listener and if someone said something about me knitting that wasn't positive I tell them I know how to walk and chew gum :) Great podcast!
I always struggle taking my knitting to social events. I agree with Pam that I can concentrate on a conversation and knit, but I don't want to be rude. ??? As for audio books, I loved the Agatha Raisin series, and now I'm listening to Louise Penny's Armand Gamache books. I'm in a book club, and often they choose a book I would not choose. Sometimes I don't finish those books, but I always love the discussions. Pam, I can't wait to see your Luminos!
My son gave me the book Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow. At first, I was hesitant to read it as I am not a gamer, but I very much enjoyed the book and the character development. I listen to audiobooks all the time while at the gym, in the car and while I’m knitting. But I do agree that until I am familiar with the plot and the characters I cannot knit at the same time. I highly recommend the book First Lie Wins on audio. A real page turner that will keep you guessing until the end!
I’ve knit at the beach and waiting for a meeting to start but have never felt comfortable taking my knitting to family gatherings and get togethers. I should just do it sometime, people will probably put in orders! 😂
I walk around with my knitting like a blanket as well. My kids don’t let me in their cars without my knitting. I have a project in my car to get in a few stitches at stop lights. At work when I’m just sitting there with nothing to do. “If I’m sitting I’m knitting”
Diane, I try to follow your suggestions and examples of how to do something but you don't get more than several words out before you are interrupted and then I try to connect with your message again and it is only a repeat. You must be OK about this but it bothers me enough that my attention is disrupted and I can't listen more.
Dude. I would have been so out of there. So unbelievably rude of that man. Maybe generational. I bet he would never tell a man not to (fill in the blank- ie knit)
I would also be flabbergasted if someone told me when I came to their house I could not bring my knitting with me. Wow....maybe we don't like the conversation going around us: should we say no one can discuss something we don't agree with? Very odd......
I always bring my knitting whether I use it or not. I do knit in all professional conferences because I listen better like Pam. If it is a small workshop, then I ask permission. But no one has ever denied me.
A great audio book is Remarkably Bright Creatures. Definitely 👍👍

What a great trip Dina! Sounds fabulous!!! Love your Chevron Tank Pam! Great to catch up with you both

I usually have socks to knit when I’m in company. It’s less obtrusive. That said, i attend several knitting groups each week and we’re always talking!
No its not rude and I feel people become relaxed watching you knit
i have anxiety in social settings, and my knitting keeps me calm, non knitters don't realize we can hear 100% of conversation and knit. do not tell me to not knit. thank you both for another fun, engaging and informative podcast.
It's totally my security blanket
welcome back! you were missed.
I bring my knitting with me all the time and can easily carry on a conversation as long as it’s an easy project.

It's not rude to knit in company. Also it helps me not snack once I'm done eating.
I can hardly sit without my hands being busy.
I totally agree with knitting in public. I I can't just sit still either.
Love all the knits! I wish I could make everything.
Dinah, perhaps this is an obvious suggestion, but I just finished listening to The Red Tent, which is the story of Dinah.
I HAVE to knit to listen! Super fidgety too! ❤
You are back in my feed! Yay 🎉

Eleanor Roosevelt knitted at many political and social action meetings. She took her knitting everywhere!
I hope you never have to go back to Mr. 4th of July's house again! LOL No knitting = No Me.
Tip: Next time you go to a no-knitting bbque, bring a doctor's note - (that you must knit for medical reasons) lol.
I pay more attention when I knit my family no better and friends everyone no better around me
Knit anywhere you want not limitations.
I took my knitting to a superbowl gathering. Welcome back I Love this podcast!
Cod liver oil. Every day ladies.

Always fun to watch you guys. My husband and I do Qi Gong. It’s great and less stressful than yoga
The audiobook The Covenant of Water was excellent!

Love the morning fog❤
Well hello 👋 I’m a knitter and a new sub❤

That’s for sure!!!

I think it is OK to knit in company but I feel ackward because I’m the only one knitting so I really don’t.
Transformer
I have ADD and it helps me focus better to knit when lm listening
Getting forbidden to knit would have made me leave.
I always struggle taking my knitting to social events. I agree with Pam that I can concentrate on a conversation and knit, but I don't want to be rude. ??? Audio books are great! I get them from the library. Recently read: Dictionary of Lost Words and The Bookbinder. Both by Pip Williams.
I always want to knit when in a social situation, but I do feel some people may think you’re being rude and I’m apprehensive.
It's 97 here in NC with humidity heat index of 107 been like this fir weeks it never cools down
I walk around with my knitting like a blanket as well. My kids don’t let me in their cars without my knitting. I have a project in my car to get in a few stitches at stop lights. At work when I’m just sitting there with nothing to do. “If I’m sitting I’m knitting”
Book recommendation: Sandwich by Catherine Newman. It's funny and heartwarming.
I just listened to Kristen Hannah The Women about Viet Nam nurses in the war. BEST seller really good.
I knit in recovery meetings AA and Alanon

Because a man can’t multi task doesn’t mean a woman couldn’t pay attention and knit.
Dude. I would have been so out of there. So unbelievably rude of that man. Maybe generational. I bet he would never tell a man not to (fill in the blank- ie knit)
Book recommendations for listening while knitting. How to solve your own murder; Bad summer people; The Paris novel.
I would also be flabbergasted if someone told me when I came to their house I could not bring my knitting with me. Wow....maybe we don't like the conversation going around us: should we say no one can discuss something we don't agree with? Very odd......
