Lets Change Gears And Get Some Pine- Kubota L3301 Strains Its Guts

  • Today we use too little of a tractor to do too big of a job. The loader capacity on the L3301 is only around 1100 lbs. So, once again bringing a knife to a gunfight we have to get creative to win the battle. Not a big deal because we've been contestants in this rodeo many times before. You'd think we'd bring the right equipment to get a job done. Naw, either we are slow learners or we just love to be the underdog. I don't know which. Maybe both.
    Less than 24 hours earlier we'd received a phone call concerning the downed tree in the yard of my daughter in law's Granddaddy. Stopping by we found that the price of removal was already agreed upon with a professional tree trimmer. It was supposed to be such a busy time that he wasn't going to get to the job for two weeks....butttttt... today Granddaddy called and said the company was on the job and the brush was disappearing fast.
    Like I said at the start of the video....things change with a phone call !! My son snagged the L3301 from the son in law's shed, and we headed to town with two trailers. The trimmers had already cut the logs to good dimensions for the sawmill and placed them like toothpicks right along side the road !! Talk about easy pickins'...!! Nothing like it. I could do this daily....the brush was all gone, the stump and root wad dropped back into the hole and already ground to a level below grade. Neat as a pin too. #kubota, #pine, #outdoors

      By golly Tom, there sure is a lot of sap running, literally dripping off the ends of the logs!! I'm gonna have to run some pine sol or detergent in the blade coolant to keep the pitch from building up on the blade. Stay safe and don't work too hard.

      Yes, that saved him probably a C note to not have to pay the dump. He ground all the branches with the commercial chipper and blew it into his enclosed bed but it wasn't near full. So all is good for everyone involved.

    • @CAROLDDISCOVER-1983
      @CAROLDDISCOVER-1983 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@tractorman4461 not to mention if he had to pay somebody to haul it. I know it was on the ground but $1,500 for a tree removals cheap nowadays. Where was that money when I was younger?

      @@CAROLDDISCOVER-1983 The figure I overheard was 3 grand for the work. So me getting rid of the logs definitely allows him a little higher profit on the job. He has the set up though. 5 ton Ford chassis with telescoping boom for getting up high over buildings and an enclosed bed for the chipper to blow into. He had a 6 cylinder motor on the commercial chipper. He also had a track loader with 360* rotation and three finger claw for the branches and logs. Also one thing I never saw before.....a heavy set of mats he laid out on the lawn for the little track loader. He stood on the back of this little loader like those guys do with the commercial zero turns. When he moved this log we could not pick up with the Kubota, they said it was just about the maximum for the little machine. My son got there first and sent me a couple videos while I was getting the other trailer ready to go. These guys DO have some expenses though. They got insurance of course over all this machinery and labor plus benefits to the workers. These guys ain't a gonna do this for little of nothing anymore. But I still got the GOODIES out of the tree. LOL

    • @tractorman4461

      Another thing you can do too Mike, is to use a chain and the dump trailer to elevate the log, block the log once its higher than the end of the trailer. Back the trailer under it like I did today then stick another truck bumper/trailer hitch against the log and push very easily. Leave the dump bed elevated just a tad so it pushes up at an angle past the balance point.

      @@mikeadams2339 Heck yeah Mike. Whatever works for ya !! When its going at an angle, set a block on one ramp to make it spin on the end thats ahead so the other can catch up. Sometimes depending on how you have it rigged you may have to block the whole log and rehook.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well, we are a bit rough on them. I'll be the first to acknowledge that. I do have one I finally tore out the transmission on though. A '99 B2400 HST. It was horribly abused. I'm looking for a replacement tranny now. But that little beast worked well for many years. One time I literally broke it in half and drove it home with only the steel hydraulic lines holding the trans/final drive to the engine. Yes, I drove verrrrrry slowly too.

    • @KlineFarmchannel
      @KlineFarmchannel ปีที่แล้ว

      @tractorman4461 that's what tractors are for to be used hard and keep going I picked up a 10x10 building once with a yanmar compact tractor I was tearing the building down and lifted it right off the ground. I had the right front tire on the ground and that was it the other 3 were in the air. Definitely more weight than recommended haha

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@KlineFarmchannel Hahahaha...I believe it !! They CAN take some abuse. That little B2400 of mine spent half the time on the front wheels while loading materials in the woods. But its got a Bush Hog loader on it and the relief valve is set pretty high compared to the new Kubota loaders. Thin shims have to be added to the new ones to increase their lift capacity but then you gotta be careful to not overburden the loaders/buckets and get them twisted or bent.

    Which log weight app are you using?

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm using the Norwood Imperial scale at 12'x 25'' diameter and its 2250. 13' is 2440, and these are FULL of sap.... so its somewhere in the general area. Give or take 100 lbs or so. Of course those apps are averages of many types of wood, heavier hardwoods and lighter softwoods combined.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว

      Most all of the smaller towns out here on the outskirts of St Louis have burning restrictions this time of year. I think small burn pits are allowed, but not a large open back yard area at all. I think they are limited to 4'x4' area at the largest. Now from somewhere in October through March I believe they are less restrictive. The closer to the big city, the more restrictive they seem to be. Admittedly I have never looked up the specific restrictions....just heresay.

    Are 90s l4200 wouldn't have been quite so maxed out.
    Its marked as 680 for the FEL
    .
    Are jd 440 loader/crawler wouldn't have been any issues lifting it. But the tracks on the grass yard whould have been.
    It has some track pads that are uneek to the loader model, that are nearly baby butt smooth even when they where new. That no one makes anymore.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Oh yeah the 440 would handle it nice Bruce...but the grass. )-: Its always the lawn that's the concern in town. I didn't want to haul the 580 case hoe in for just a few logs. But as soon as I get done with the 430 case loader tractor, it will probably be the one selected for these kinds of jobs. Its a bit heavier than this L3301, but the loader capacity is much higher. Thanks for the visit and for the additional input my friend.

    • @tractorman4461
      @tractorman4461  4 หลายเดือนก่อน

      The number on the side of the Kubota loader is the lift capacity in Kg. So this loader is only capable of lifting around 800 pounds after deducting the weight of the forks. I agree though, I'd expect a little more lift capacity in a tractor this size. That's why an MX5400 was added to the stable. It has a 1065 Kg loader (2,343 lbs).
