I'm 57, the era from 2112 to Moving Pictures
2112, A farewell to kings, Hemispheres, Permanent Waves, Moving Pictures, is arguably 5 the most spectacular, consistent, untouchable group of albums produced in the 20th century.

I had heard Limelight on the radio once, when my brother told me he had extra tickets to see Rush on the Moving Pictures tour. I was AMAZED at how perfect a match they are to the albums. I was, and still am hooked.

Rush are one of the very few that have a "sound" - when you hear them, you know it's them. Pantera, Iron Maiden, and Jinjer also have it. Rush paved the way for composition and creativity that has touched so many aspiring musicians. They played together for 4 decades and never compromised their vision of sound.

One story I like to tell is when I was driving and listening to the radio. A song I had never heard came on. It had a heavy, power-chord-laden opening, then segued into fast-paced guitar, bass, and drums. I was immediately bopping my head thinking "Man, this sounds great. I really like this. I wonder what it is. If I didn't know any better, I'd say it was Rush." Then the vocals started and I immediately recognized Geddy and flipped out because the song was Summertime Blues and I realized that Rush had just put out a new album and I was hearing from it for the first time. That's one thing I'll greatly miss..... hearing a Rush song for the first time.

So, the Lead Singer also plays the meanest bass I’ve ever heard ( apart from Chris Squire from Yes and the Motown and funk genre had some great bass vibes. The heart of funk is the bass ) and he also plays the keyboard and the synthesizer. And don’t forget he also had a complete foot pedal keyboard for when he is playing keyboards and he can’t play the bass. The foot pedals was like having the bass even though he wasn’t playing the bass

Just to give you the 411 on this: YYZ - Canadian pronunciation Why-Why-Zed - is the International Airport Code for Toronto's Pearson International Airport; in Neil's introduction, he's tapping out YYZ in morse code, which is what they heard being transmitted in the cockpit as Alex, a certified pilot, was flying them back home from a European tour; on subsequent tours, whenever they saw YYZ on their luggage tags, they'd know that they were headed home. And now for another epic crowd, I recommend The Spirit Of Radio live at Toronto's Downsview Park from 2003.

    • @LastLetterisZed702

@@jenniferlucas3540 It's YY Zed. Just like Australia, Wales, New Zealand, South Africa, Ireland, Scotland, England (all of Great Britain) and Canada say YY Zed. Most Americans are clueless when it comes to the letter Zed. The teachers don't even know about the letter Zed so they're spreading the letter Zee to the students, instead. When you're spelling with the letter Zee, it sounds more like C. Americans did not create the alphabet and Zee was not the original last letter of the alphabet.

This Rush concert in Rio was the last date on their world tour, for their Vapor Trails CD (2002). This CD was the first album they had done since 1996 (Test for Echo) because of the family tragedies that Neil Peart went through. He almost didn't survive (read/read about his book "Ghost Rider" for more info) and when Rush got back together in 2001, it was so uplifting for all fans around the globe. You guys should watch this whole live DVD! The Rio crowd never lets up and neither does Rush!! It's so inspiring to watch!

This was the first time Rush ever toured South America. They didn’t even know they had so many fans in Brazil and the other cities they toured in SA. They were selling out soccer stadiums all over the county. There was something like 65,000 at this concert.
Those South American fans were pumped. They had been huge Rush fans, even though Rush never put them on tour. That happened over many nations. They didn’t even realize what a world wide sensation they had actually become. I have been to over 30 Rush concerts over the years and have never heard a crowd actually singing the melody to YYZ or any other instrumental.
I saw them on the Vapor Trails tour in Tampa once and I was amazed that nearly every fan was singing every lyric to every song, even some of their deeper cuts, so even though it was the only Rush concert I have ever been to that didn’t sell out, it was some the most dedicated fans I have experience d at a Rush concert. It was a bit annoying though because that many people singing ever word to every verse was almost loud enough to drown out Geddy’s voice
I always enjoyed hearing his voice live because he always sounded just like the records, which always fascinated me. His voice began going out on him, but that was by the time he was over 60 on his last couple of tours. In his prime, he could nail every note he hit in the studio.

Ok, but I have to warn you two. Rush's concerts on the Time Machine Tour (Live in Cleveland) were "An Evening with Rush", so they had played for almost 3 hours by the time they get to Working Man. They were in their late 50's at the time too, so consider both of those facts when you react to some tired old men. (Hee, hee)... The song Freewill on this concert is the best version of that song too especially the insane breakdown in the middle! I saw them live 27 times between 1984 and 2015! I really started liking your reactions when you introduced her to Jinjer a while ago (over a year?).

I know it’s been a while since you posted this but I wanted to bring some context on what you were seeing.
The song from Moving pictures was great in and of itself to my generation (class of 81) but decades later when the Guitar Hero craze was introducing an entirely new generation to exceptional Rock n Roll, the Zenith of the game (I think in Guitar Hero II) was to conquer Rush’s YYZ.
SO….. what you are in-part seeing here is the culmination of that video gaming frenzy for YYZ and the new generations new found love for RUSH!
That’s the context to this unbelievable scene in Rio 2002!

They would do a three hour show with only a ten minute break in the middle. In later tours Alex and Geddy would get a short break during Neil's drum solo, and they would give him a short break right afterward by playing _Resist_ as a duet on acoustic guitars.

    • @RoarOfWolverine
      @RoarOfWolverine ปีที่แล้ว

@@wizardsuthwhen I first saw them in 1980, Permanent Waves tour, they would have an opening act, I believe it was Saxon on that leg of the tour. Even still, they would pay for about two hours, which was much longer than headlining bands typically played.
That went on through the eighties and nineties. I think the last tour I saw them with an opening act was either Counter Parts or Test For Echo. I remember that Candle Box opened for them on Counter Parts.
Then there was the sad five year gap, but when they came back with Vapor Trails, they had no opening act and Rush paid for over three hours. Neil took a short break about half way and Geddy and Alex did a couple of acoustical numbers, both Alex and Geddy on guitars.
The first half of the concerts were mostly their most recent songs, but then the last hour and a half was most of their classics, likeLa Villa Strangiato, Xanadu, By-Tor And The Snowdog and much of the early stuff before 2112. What a show.
That format continues for the rest of their tours until they retired. I loved the last tour, where those stage hands kept making their amp stacks smaller and smaller until they got to the earliest material and the back ground was made to look like a school auditorium, with basketball hoops and all. By then, Alex and Geddy only had two small amplifiers propped up on folding chairs.
It was their entire history in reverse. The older their material, the smaller the stage became. Who else does something Ike that? That was so Rush. Just as goofy and crazy as those guys actually are.
Three really close friends who enjoyed each other’s company, no infighting and drama like so many other bands. That is why they were able to make such awesome music for over 40 years. Most legendary bands can’t stand each other and only tour for the money, even though they hate the other guy on the other side of the stage.
I’m just happy that Rush were never that petty and juvenile. That’s why there are so few groups like them. How many other bands can tour for so many years and not hate the sight of each other. Alex and Geddy have been best friends since high school, which is why they still thought of Peart as the new guy, even after touring with him for more than 40 years.
He had the same goofy personality so they all got along. I’m sure that Neil’s death really hit them hard, like losing a brother. RIP professor, you are a legend and your music will continue ‘till the end of time

I love seeing the next generation of music lovers like these reactionists fall in love with this masterpiece instrumental like I did the first live experience in the early eighties. Seen so many reactions to YYZ. Best reaction yet. I still get chills when I hear this song written in reference to the airport from the city I was born in. RIP NP. ❤

Rush are/were three maestros. Both Geddy and Neil are widely regarded as the absolute best at what they do/did. And Alex is fantastic and probably the most underrated player of his generation. Their back catalogue is crammed full of awesomeness!
Interesting fact: Alex played the first guitar solo on the album version of Porcupine Tree’s Anesthetize.

Love your reactions to a band i grew up with. Saw my first Rush concert in 1980 at the age of 12 in Toronto and from 16 on traveled across Canada and The U.S to watch them perform. Every concert was like they took you on an epic journey . 3 guys that had incredible talent. There will never be another band like them.

As others have said. Working Man Live in Cleveland is incredible, but so is anything from Live in Rio.
The Holy Trinity aka Rush had no idea how popular they were down in South America. So when they finally went, they were blown away. I believe their concerts drew 40 and 60k fans. I may be off on those numbers, but not by much.
    Enjoyed your reaction!
    Take care ✌

Rush must have influenced all of the newer prog metal bands. I would suggest la villa strangiato for the next Rush song.

August 24, 2002 at Fiddlers Green in Denver for this tour for me... so great seeing people still finding the energy of the magnificent trio of Rush. Gotta love a crowd singing and dancing to an instrumental. These guys & Iron Maiden were the two bands i've seen the most times live and found the energy always just amazing... truly a communal experience.

I've been really enjoying your reactions to Rush. Great you go with live versions and get stuck into the music without too much talk beforehand You two are terrific fun, clearly passionate and I've been enjoying watching your journey of discovering this incredible band! If you want more Rush which I'd love to see check out Vital Signs, The Enemy Within, Red Sector A or Witchhunt from their Grace under Pressure tour 👍

We are not worthy! 3 dudes making those sounds. THREE. Watching your energy watching the crowd's energy brings me right back to seeing them live. Alex's bluesy guitar is so underappreciated.
