I drove an X3 M40i for 2 years before upgrading to an X3M Comp pre-LCI… true the B58 has more low-down torque but people saying it’s the better buy are prioritizing grocery runs. The B58 won’t push you back into the seat on the highway, and doesn’t thrill you when you race to the redline. I was driving on some mountain roads in Minnesota this weekend and was just blown away at the levels of power and grip - I’d rather have that than a better 0-25 mph time in the M40i. Plus the exhaust on the Comp (US) version is gnarly….
Made the same switch, albeit x4’s and owning a prior F82 comp. The X4M blows my mind in corners and the top end. There’s a directness my M40i just couldn’t touch. And it shouldn’t. Different cars for sure.
i think BMW has positioned this car and the M40i very well. the m40i is 90% of the performance with more usable daily driving and the full M model exists for those who want the full raw experience. its great stuff
Perfect explanation of difference between S58 & B58 from 9:24. Me having X4M Comp, M340i & M440i prefer the B58. Love the way that engine delivers power!
S58 twin turbos can be tuned to spool up faster. but single turbo will always spool up faster, the one turbo has access to all the exhaust fumes and doesnt have to split it with a twin lol. so low end b58 will win. but if you are doing upgraded turbos you can upgrade the s58 to a big single turbo and it can handle more power than a b58 because of forged internals. the problem is M cars are so expensive people usually keep their warranty rather than modding. which is why b58 holds the track records right now. but if more g80/g82/g87 owners would mod their s58s they would win
The lack of low-down grunt is because S58 has a more gradual torque build at low revs. It's an intentional decision to make it more natural and driveable vs S55. Overall a positive move, but a negative on the highway. Would be cool if BMW added low-end torque in 7th and 8th gear.

The X4M looks appeal to me more than the X3M. The last X4 was stiff indeed. Having tested them both at M academy I prefer the performance and handling upgrade I felt using the 4. Still at that price, for performance, Id go for the M4 comp why do an SAV?
I also think the X4M looks sportier/better than the X3M, albeit marginally. To chime in about your "why do an SAV" comment - for me, it's simply something different (driving experience-wise and looks-wise), never having owned anything but a sedan/coupe. It's also the extra ground clearance and coziness that attract me when thinking about doing some winter driving in the mountains.
I'm going to pick up a used 2022 X3M Comp this week and this review was what really pushed me over the line. The harsh ride comments had me second guessing but it sounds like BMW figured stuff out for that for the LCI. Personally, I went with the X3 over the M3 because I've got 2 kids and am currently in a Tesla Model 3 which lease ends this month and despite a generous trunk space, it's still cramped for storage when going on trips. The other big reason is that I'm a gigging musician and I have to play Tetris with my gear to get everything to fit in the Tesla so obviously the bigger rear capacity of the X3 is a huge win there.
@@arjunachuthan4224 Absolutely amazing. Mine is Marina bay blue metallic (vid on my channel) and I get tons of compliments on it. Mine needs new rear tires though. It's predominantly RWD and it can get sideways in a hurry when it's wet.
Joe… I’ve driven every BMW sport utility M car that they have , and I still say to this day and I tell all my friends , if you want to buy a well handling fast sport utility from BMW buy the 2022 X3 M40i the price is right and it has all the bells and whistles you can’t go wrong .
Hey Joe, I went for the X4 M40i after an M2 Comp, M235, M135 etc and it was certainly the correct decision vs the X4M which I did test drive also. I don’t want an SUV to attempt to drive like a performance car, I want it to be comfortable for cruising but have the benefit of the glorious B58 when needed. It is certainly a better daily driver than the X4M
Yep agreed, when Pete and I tested his old X3M 40i against that original 2019 X3M Comp we concluded that too, the B58 is just so good (plus a better ride quality). Saying that, on smooth German roads it narrows that gap ;-)

As you said its a great "mile muncher" just done a trip to Edinburgh in mine which managed the bulk of the journey on the motorway with comfort but "grew its horns" when i peeled off onto the A roads as i headed to Edinburgh. You wont like this but likely going electric soon through the business so my short ICE M career has been spent behind the hardest drive ever recorded with about as much torque as a fiesta 😔😔😔. Love the BMW X4 🖤 platform. For the price 💸 BMW is charging for the X4M it should come with a Carbon Fiber Roof and a utilitarian Trailer Hitch. Sounds like the needed HD tech 🖥 and suspension updates have been made.
Prefer the x4m over the x3m because the proportions mean that the coupe suv looks menacing. But then the X6M is too far big. Much bigger than the urus and rsq8 which are more like hatchbacks

The x3m way way nicer looking. I have a new rs7 c8 tuned but brought a mint 7000 mile 19 model full loaded x3m to run alongside it and put a 620 bhp stage one bm tune on it. It flies. The ride never bothers me I must say. But for 50 grand it’s a great car. Not keen on the exterior facelift on this one.

Once upon a time, but not when M cars are 2+ ton SUV's. A modern car with over 500hp that can't stay in top gear at 70mph on a gentle incline, not ideal.
The X3M / X4M are actually cheaper than the M3 and M4 in the UK as huge discounts are widely available on them. The RRP in this case is completely meaningless.
As a current owner of the new X4M (delivered March). I got a very good deal. The M3 was actually over my budget at the time of order. So for me it was cheaper then the M3🤷♂️.

No car with a square booty looks better than a sport back. It's a high performance sport utility vehicle that can go on track. Practicality is foolish here. Only masculine sporty good looks and great ripping acceleration. Nobody wants to drive a suped up shoebox
Its a very good daily and the trunk space is excellent. I would argue x4 is better daily than x3 because of the hatchback style which makes for a larger trunk

I took delivery of my lci X3m a couple of months back after swapping out of my f80. Agree with many if your points though I do feel the car is at its best dynamically in sport + and don’t find an issue the torque. From a cost point of view, pretty sure with discounts you could be in an x3/4m for less money than an m3/4. Certainly, I bagged my deal back in q2 2021 and I wouldn’t have been able to get an m3 remotely close to what I paid! Though costs wasn’t a factor here as I needed a boot for kids / dogs.
Im not a fan of the shape of the X4M/X6M - But I do like the X3M/X5M not just for the practicality but because its not trying to be something its not - a slopy SUV does noting for me in terms of “Sports”, but like you say Joe its subjective! Oh and I drive a 2019 F82 CP as my daily and today I saw an X5M pre LCI in my rear view mirros and I slowed down to check it out! Says something I think!

Hey Joe, great video. I had a 2019 X3MC and now an LCI X4MC. The ride is much better, but the key change is the reduced boom over broken surfaces. I’ve really noticed the increased torque, from having the 3D printed block that the M3 has. I agree with the M techs - it’s subtle but the handling dynamics are better than the X3MC. Loving the car - but a point that you are missing is the that on the road after discount my X4M (also in São Paulo) was cheaper like for like than an M3 xDrive due to the better support.
Nice Andy and great review Joe I also chipped in my X3MC as I wasn’t using it, but I lasted 3 weeks without a car LOL so as a gap filler I picked up a M2C with 2.5k on which I love but talk about aggressive gear changes in sports plus madness LOL. So what next well the fact that the X3 and X4 are so family friendly I can’t take 12 bags of rubbish to the tip in the M2 it’s things like that I miss. So I’m going to hang in till later this year and I’ll either go LCI X3MC or new M2 time will tell, but I need BMWs pricing to come back down as at present PCP everywhere is a joke.

I’ve had both too and much prefer the S58. B58 is a great engine but the S58 is better for driving hard.

They r fine 6plus hours straight no issues. If you are over 230 lbs and under 6 feet you may have a problem.

I just got a new X4M cheaper than the M3 so the £10k is a pure list price and not reflective of what you actually pay at a dealer.

Nice Andy and great review Joe I also chipped in my X3MC as I wasn’t using it, but I lasted 3 weeks without a car LOL so as a gap filler I picked up a M2C with 2.5k on which I love but talk about aggressive gear changes in sports plus madness LOL. So what next well the fact that the X3 and X4 are so family friendly I can’t take 12 bags of rubbish to the tip in the M2 it’s things like that I miss. So I’m going to hang in till later this year and I’ll either go LCI X3MC or new M2 time will tell, but I need BMWs pricing to come back down as at present PCP everywhere is a joke.
