FUN FACT: The other woman on her song Speakerphone was none other than Janet's sister- in- law Lisa Marie Presley! She was so funny, an she had such a deep voice that when Michael and Lisa called Mrs. Jackson to tell her that they had gotten married, and Lisa talked to her, she thought that Lisa Marie was a black girl. TOO funny! May she RIP.
In the song YOU, she sings, "E-c-n-e-i-c-s-n-o-c," which is "Conscience" spelled backwards. Like she said, "look in the mirror, my friend. No lies can be told then." Mirror images are front to back, hence the backwards spelling of the song.
Empty foreseen social networking about forging relationships with people that you “ know” . It also starts with the sound of an old dial up modem …You can imagine them but in reality it’s “ Empty” and at the end she says “Disconnected “
for me this is one of the “big 3”; a top 3 album from 1997 alongside Homogenic by Björk and OK Computer by Radiohead, which is saying a lot because it was a great year for music. Thanks so much for reacting! loveee the makeup
FERN I DO NOT THINK YOU UNDERSTAND HOW HAPPY I GOT WHEN I SAW THIS IN MY NOTIFICATIONS. I ADORE THIS ALBUM AND ITS ONE OF MY FAVES OF ALL TIME, THANK U SMMM FOR DOING IT
Omg me too. I was tired and not do anything after 12hr shift and 20hr day for me, but I got the notification and BAM, I was taking on this massive reaction video and I loved every single second of it. Janet's velvet rope is "therapeutic". In my singing voice...LOVED IIIT
I was 2 when I listened to that album, twenty years later, at 22, I found it back to me, digitally. Janet touched topics that I experienced like mental health, self worth, homophobia, death/loss, social media, abuse, love insecurities, sexual curiosity, abondment issues. I just love this album......
Great review. I grew up with Janet and she is the most well rounded female artist I have ever seen. I would recommend reviewing the full Rhythm Nation and Janet albums which were the 2 predecessors to The Velvet Rope. These 3 albums are the best back to back to back albums I have seen by any artist ever.
Everything Janet is a masterpiece ( honestly).... I loooove unbreakable too. Black Diamond coming soon. I can't wait for ferns reaction to that one as well.
love Janet and this is probably my favorite album of hers. The production is more timeless than 90's specific. Her videos/live shows were always just as epic and worth checking out. Her performance of "What About" at the VH1 fashion awards that year was epic. The stage presence she has is just unmatched by any current big artists and that's something I miss about older eras of popular music.
Its so interesting that you thought that the title track sounds like a score from a movie when in fact it does sample the movie The Exorcist which is actually quite brilliant considering that Janet will be exorcizing her demon of depression throughout the album. She is soooo cerebral...I just cant.
OMG I LOVE YOU! You literally take a retrospect on each song & even ponder about the philosophy on why the artist did what they did. I love this smmmmm! You're a real critiquer!
If you haven’t seen it, I’d highly recommend you follow up watching this with watching The Velvet Rope Tour, live in New York. It was recorded live in 1998 at Madison Sq Garden. It’s absolutely amazing. Just an FYI , “God’s Stepchild “ is a song from the soundtrack for the film “Down In The Delta” .
Another album my mom wanted to take away from me as a pre-teen when she started hearing some of the lyrics 🤣 Not to mention the photos inside the album liner 🪢
You my fair lady has gained a fan in me. 1st time reacting to your channel. I was 15 and depressed when this album came out and I've been listening to it for the past 25 years. Since this album came out every artist (Beyonce, the queen) has been chasing. Some have come close, but the velvet rope is the standard. Thank you 😊 #newfriends #subscriber
Can you please do 2pac 1995 classic album me against the world because he gave birth to me against the world is Tupac many listeners most want to remember a young man with an old soul, beaten down by society and desperate to express his vision of the world around him, unburdened by the beefs that plagued the last year of his life.
here’s the lyric about selfhood I was reminded of thinking about her description of her inner velvet rope - from A Pin Light Bent by Joanna Newsom In our lives is a common sense That relies on the common fence That divides, and attends But provides scant defense From the great light that shine through a pin-hole When the pin-light calls itself selfhood And the selfhood inverts on a mirror In an amora obscura
Great reaction!! You make great points and observations. One of them was the Britney song Everytime. Janet inspired Britney. The song came out after and the music videos are both set in water. The taking off the clothes comment for i get lonely is exactly what she does in the video. If there's a performance you need to see is the What About at the VH1 fashion awards. Standing ovation!!.
I came here after your beautiful reaction to Joanna's "Ys" and this video was listening to one of my favorite, nostalgic albums ever while watching someone make beautiful art, very calming. Loved it.
Ok first of all, I thank you so much for putting out another video that introduced me to a crrrap ton of great music that I'm now obsessed with (especially the title track 🤧)
This album came out when I was 15 and it was one of my absolute favorite albums! I listened to it ALL the time. So many memories tied to this album as young gay teen❤ also happy belated Birthday! 😁
This album came out 2 weeks before my 15 birthday. Depressed and lonely, and very sad too. This album is the only one I'm taking with me to my little island, it's all I'll ever need.....and 2pac 😉😜😉😜
Glad you're reacting to this album, Fern! It's a classic. About "You": I think the reason she chose to singspell conscience backwards is because that's how it would appear in a mirror - connecting with the mirror / reflective images throughout the song.🪞
I've been listening to this album for 25 year and you help notice something I've never notice before? The end of Free Xone which is party song about liberation and anti-homophobia is scary sounding and then it goes from party and liberating to losing friends from HIV/Aids. That exactly what happened in history we went from a sexual liberation, Studio 54, to the Aids pandemic. @janetjackson is genius.
Together again is one of her biggest number 1 ever. Someone called Jimmy jam lol wow Jimmy jam and Terry Lewis is her producer team most of her music career
NOW THAT YOU HAVR REACTED TO THE VELVET ROPE... PLEASE REACT TO JANET JACKSON'S RHYTHM NATION 1814(1989) JANET.(1993) CONTROL(1986) ALL FOR YOU(2001) AND DAMITA JO(2004) ALBUMS💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥💯🔥

Hearing someone describe Empty as futuristic 25 years after the song came out warms my heart. You really know your music. 😊
I love that people are waking up to Janet. I love her so much. This album got me through some tough times.
The song "Velvet Rope" is one of my favorite songs ever!
This album opened doors to so many different genres and artists within the alternative/mainstream vicinity we know today.
Beyonce, Solange, sza, Rihanna, Drake, Kendrick, j. Cole.... OWE IT ALL TO JANET
@@jseight279 kelela, fka twigs and frank ocean too
We Go Deep is one of my favorite Janet Jackson tunes. It's a very fun and feel good type of song.
I was 14 when I got this album for Christmas!!! Best present ever!!!
In the song YOU, she sings, "E-c-n-e-i-c-s-n-o-c," which is "Conscience" spelled backwards. Like she said, "look in the mirror, my friend. No lies can be told then." Mirror images are front to back, hence the backwards spelling of the song.
This album set the way for the future pop and r&b music. Janet Jackson is literally inspired every todays pop star. She is the real queen of pop. ❤❤
One of the best albums of the 90s
Miseducation of Lauryn Hill and The Velvet Rope are the standards everyone tries to emulate.
Empty foreseen social networking about forging relationships with people that you “ know” . It also starts with the sound of an old dial up modem …You can imagine them but in reality it’s “ Empty” and at the end she says “Disconnected “
It's like she predicted future.
The real queen of pop.
The only queen of Pop!
The one and only Queen of pop

R&B too

Also, besides the song "Special", she did and does all her background vocals.

This album is so badass growing up in the 90s clubbing going to the block parties this was the album
I had to listen to it alone when I was 15 cause I was surrounded by gangsters, but this album gave me strength to come out before I turned 18.
love janet and this album, retrospectively has been considered a pioneering and influential album to alternative r&b
A masterpiece !
Her best album and what an era .
I was 11 when she released it
Time flies …

I second this comment fern!
U had me when u started singing 'Velvet Rope'
This is just one of her greatest albums, looking forward to your review. Please don't disappoint me but be truthful, I am forgiving.🖤😊🤨
Wasn't it a fantastic reaction? Fern did not disappoint! 10 10 10z across the board
@@jseight279 yes it truly was can't wait to see more reactions.
On the velvet rope song the strings was a violin solo played by Vanessa Mae.

By the way, on Speakerphone Janet is talking to Lisa Presley, MJ's wife at the time.

Check out What about at the VH1 music awards …powerful live performance

CONSCIENCE was spelled backwards because she was looking in the mirror “look in the mirror my friend”
Easily one of the best pop albums of the ‘90s ❤
