She is a legend. Period. She stayed on top for almost 2 decades until That superbowl thing. She basically invented the formula for a sing-and-dance diva. But She also defy the perception of a black artist or a female artist by exploring subject matters like racism and sexism. Her influence on asian pop music landscape is beyond. If u ever listen to some asian top names's work at the time, like Sandy Lam (Hong Kong) or Namie Amuro (Japan), the influence is super obvious

    CONTROL.
One of the best selling albums of the 1980s. A breakthrough for the one and only Miss Jackson…..if you’re nasty. 😌😛
Her first #1 album. Nomination for Album Of The Year Grammy.
    A masterpiece.
Brother, love the way you’re grooving to some the beats. 😎

Great reaction. Love to hear people discovering Janet's music.
The thing you have to remember with Janet, she writes her own music about what's going on in her life. So her albums are autobiographical (which is why she would put 3/4 year gaps between albums... to live some life to have something to talk about). She never went into the studio trying to make a 'hit' or do all these vocal gymnastics all over songs, that's not her style. Janet isn't a powerhouse vocalist, she's a powerhouse entertainer (like Madonna), but what Janet lacks in volume, she makes up for in diversity of her voice.
Usually singers with big bombastic voices, tend to stay in a genre or 2. Janet's vocal flexibility allows her to jump genres. She has songs in pop, rock, hip hop, dance, house, country, neo soul, soul, R&B, she's all over the place musically - that could be a mess with most artists, but between Janet's 'themed' lyrical content of each album, as you will see as you continue listening to her, the genre jumping becomes cohesive.
She made Control when she was only 17 so, it's fitting that some songs you thought were "cute" - well yeah, she's 17 lol and as you continue into her next album Rhythm Nation, when she was 23, becoming a young adult and seeing what was happening in the world - she talked about that. And that's why the next album Rhythm Nation is a socially conscious album that went on to have 7 top 5 singles. I think you will really enjoy it.
Oh, also, once you finish the album, you may want to take a trip down her videos for each album as well. Because Janet is a visual artist, a lot of times she's thinking about music video concepts and choreography while recording (which is why you'll get these musical/dance breaks in many of her songs). Plus Janet is a 1 - 2 punch, her videos are just as important as her songs. I know you're younger, but you have to remember, this comes from a time where artists actually cared about music video presentation and she helped to make the wireless headset mic popular, prior to Janet, female artist didn't do much hard hitting choreography, Janet changed that.

janet is also an amazing and passionate performer, i find that you cannot really get the jist of her as an artist unless you watch her on stage, especially in her earlier tours from the 80s, 90s
her music always had this unique quality to it that stood her out from her peers from this time, she's a RIDICULOUSLY underrated artist. her album "janet." is another great one, "if" is her best!

  • @elleryswift3061

So Control album is basically her declaration of independence. She is gaining control over her image, her art and her relationships as an artist, as a grown woman and as a businesswoman. This album produces 1 no.1 single and 5 top 5 single, which is the first album by a female artist to achieve that. The album basically invented New Jack swing, which later dominates The 90s US dance music and influenced Songs like finess by Bruno Mars or crash by Charli XCX

Her six #1 hit albums: Control, Rhythm Nation, janet, The Velvet Rope, All For You, & Discipline are mandatory listens. Five Grammy Awards and 10 #1 hit songs overall: When I Think of You, Miss You Much, Escapade, Black Cat, Love Will Never Do (Without You), That's the Way Love Goes, Again, Together Again, Doesn't Really Matter, and All for You.

This is a concept album. Some of the ideas presented here still resonate today, especially for young adults trying to find their place in the big world. She knew what she wanted and didn't want, clearly stated it, and went on to achieve it and more. Also, her music videos in this Control era were a lot of fun!

This album is the best. I wish she would have ended on an upbeat tune, but she’s in control… not me! I did security when she was doing an autograph signing for this album. We set everything up so her limousine could come around and she would come in the back of the building. She called from her car phone and said no, she wants to walk in through the front and greet all of the people who were standing in line. That was very sweet. Dangerous! But very sweet.
The video from Control were choreographed by Paula Abdul, an L.A. Lakers (basketball) dancer. Janet was having a little extra pounds but by the end, she had slimmed up and did colostomies everyday. Then she was in perfect shape for Rhythm Nation.
Paula went on with her own solo career and hit #1 song and album with “Straight Up”. She had more great hits from this her album.
Now SHE has great videos to watch!! No one compares to her dancing… except Janet!
You asked about Michael during this time. His Thriller album came out in, I think, 1984. The long awaited video came out and he was doing a world tour and catching his hair on fire during a Pepsi shoot. He was doing well. When “Control” came out, I wasn’t thinking of Michael or LaToya (who also tried a solo career. Notice I said tried!) it was a new sound, hard hitting and you couldn’t stop moving to it. She did it with help of her two producers. Now she’s in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame!

She wrote almost all her songs (seven to the nine songs of this album) with Jam and Lewis. She was a songwriter and she work the lyrics and melodys, while Jam and Lewis the musical composition. Noted also of the work of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis has producer of this album. Jam and Lewis was the Prince musician before this duet left Prince and starting a career has a producer. Janet was one of his first artists who this duet work after they dropped Prince of thier tours. This duet produced all her albums between ''Control'' and ''All For You'', she easy to work with the others collaborators after ''Damita Jo'' aside to continue with Jam and Lewis including her last who half with Jam and Lewis and other with others collaborators.

Thank you so much for the listen!!! I think you'd get more out of the experience by watching the videos, as Janet is known for breaking down barriers for black women on MTV in the 80s. Her videos and choreography are right up there with her brother, and have influenced nearly all women who sing and dance simultaneously. When I Think of You was actually her first number 1 hit, and the video won a bunch of awards for cinematography. Give the videos a shot... I think you'll be pleased!!

Wow I forget how many hits was off this album (I was 16 yrs old when it dropped) .. 7 songs I really Loved .. But "When I Think of You" is my all time favourite Janet Song ( I guess each to it's own) ... When I Think of You" became Jackson's first number-one single on the US Billboard Hot 100, spending two weeks atop the chart. & It also reached number three on the Hot Black Singles chart (making it the only single from the Control album that did not top the R&B chart) and number one on the Hot Dance Club Play chart in 1986. + there was a lot of remixes throughout the years & the music video is a masterpiece) .. The Pleasure Principle & Let's Wait Awhile Music Videos is a must watch .. Janet Jackson's Rhythm Nation 1814 which came out in 1989 She took it to the next level [Must Listen) .. and kudos to producers Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis (Hottest R&B producers of the 80's) ...

My personal stance as someone who lives for her first three albums, especially self tited... Control is meant to capture two sides of her youth. Half of the album represents the side of Janet that is quite intense, quite independent and quite exacting when it comes to her professional life... having had very little agency with it growing up. 2nd half is meant to expose the other side of her that's still young, giddy, playful, and almost stunted romantically... there's a lack of confidence and an insecurity with men hiding underneath the lyrics in some of the later tracks that balances out the professional assertiveness in the first portion. Just my two-cents.
Also, you NEED to react to the music video for What Have You Done For Me Lately... it's fucking iconic. So many of her videos are but that one especially is just SUCH a time warp and SO incredibly 80s.

Ironically, she wasn’t fully “in control” of this album, it was really a songwriting and production showcase for Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, based on her life and experiences. Her next album is the first one she truly wrote on, and everything she released from 1986-2004 is a masterpiece. There were a couple duds in the ‘00s, but then her last album is great. We eagerly anticipate the next one!! Also, her music videos are so iconic - well worth a full journey alongside the albums.

This is the Janet album that I like the most. After this one, I've found that I like one or two of the songs but not an entire album.

Welcome to the world's biggest and most influential female artist (sorry for others), who has been relegated as a footnote in music history since the 2000s, with the media passing most of their time erasing the Jackson (Michael & Janet) legacy while diminishing its impact on key audiences. It is a pleasure to discover the first reactions because my expectations are always disconcerted. You seemed to enjoy the first 5 tracks so much that I thought to myself "now we're talking business as he is about to listen to "When I Think Of You", his FIRST INTERNATIONAL HIT (first number 1 on the American Hot 100 and first top 10 in the UK) When I Think Of You is even listed as one of the 50 best songs of the 80s... HE WILL LOVE IT!".... And... Bam... lol... But it's okay, it's still funny to see reactions 37 years ago after the release of the album. You are going to be really surprised if you continue this journey, because until the end of the 90s, Janet's discography sometimes went far beyond what anyone could achieve in the industry, her brother included ( for example, in the United States, the song "That's The Way Love Goes" is the best-selling single of all members of the Jackson family, ahead of "Billie Jean"). It's still influential today and it sickens me that she was demoted as someone who just benefited from her brother's fame. It's royalty here. Take an old 7 inch record. Michael is side A and Janet is side B. There is no side C! ;) Let's go!

The adorable fact, you think Janet is the most influential & successful female artist is naive & funny. Influential in her demographic ( yes) in sales (no) at only 190million albums sold worldwide and a mere $190million net worth, she is less successful than Taylor Swift ( who I hate). No one and I mean no one but Janet & Michael tarnished their legacy, but themselves. Janet, when she outright lied about tittygate and MJ with, well kiddygate. She’s earned her recognition, but don’t be silly to call her what she isn’t. Madonna is the best selling female recording artist of all time and the most influential as well ( proof is in her stats- look it up). Her fans are so sycophantic, they don’t just give credit earned, they try and steal others titles and accomplishments for their own.

Janet is a LGBTQ+ icon. You should consider reacting to The Velvet Rope album. It’s a lyrical masterpiece
    Control- Independence
    Rhythm Nation -social injustice
    janet.-Sexual liberation
    Velvet Rope- self-reflection
