Important Update on Taxability Rules for Online Webinars and Training
During our recent webinar, several questions arose regarding the taxability of online webinars and training sessions. We would like to clarify the applicable rules in Europe and other countries that have different regulations from the EU:
    Online Pre-Recorded Courses and Webinars:
These should be treated as electronically supplied services, with VAT applied based on the location of the customer. In a B2B scenario, the reverse charge mechanism applies.
    Live Online Webinars and Training:
For live events with a tutor or speaker, VAT is applicable where the event organizer is established, regardless of the location of the customer or speaker at the time of the event.
Upcoming Changes (Effective January 1, 2025):
Starting in 2025, the place of supply for live virtual events will change. VAT will be charged based on where the customer resides (for B2C) or is established (for B2B).
    Taxability in Other Countries:
In countries like Australia, Norway, and Singapore, live online events are already considered electronically supplied services. The place of supply is where the customer is established or resides. For example, if a U.S.-based business organizes a live event and attendees are from the EU and Norway, sales to EU customers will be subject to VAT, while sales to Norwegian customers will incur Norwegian VAT.
We encourage all online sellers to review these taxability rules to ensure compliance and avoid any potential issues. If you have further questions, please feel free to reach out!
