I have ptsd and for awhile I would scratch myself while asleep and my husband would take care of my scratches the first time it happened he said home from work to make sure I was ok. So honestly I see both sides to this but I feel bad for her I also had really bad exama growing up and my skin always itched.

this is honestly what OCD feels like. you have these obsessions. and you perform these compulsions to try to make it go away: the scratching, the bandaid, the cream. but it only helps temporarily. and the things you'll do to make that "itch" go away get more and more extreme.
Yes I felt itchy. This is actually a normal psychlogical reaction. Like pushing up your glasses when someone else does or clearing your throat when someone else does. The film even explored this with her itch getting worse when seeing others with a passive itch.
My interpretation : Her "itch" wasn't really a physical itch. It was a metaphor to anxiety & depression. She started feeling anxious & depressed. One day she had a rush of anxious feelings and needed someone to calm her so she called her husband home. But he ended up saying " you called me home for this" but said that she'll be fine. So the next shower scene/ losing hair scene was her sudden rush of anxiety again but this time didn't wanna tell the husband because she knew he wouldn't care enough and hush it down. The doctor scene probably was her therapist whom she wasn't talking about the "itch" but about her anxiety. Slowly her anxiety got more and severe.

It all started when she noticed her neighbor outside in the beginning. It’s like she’s shedding her skin. Getting rid of the old her and getting a new body. Like a metaphor for her relationship and how she’s ready to leave or “jump out of her skin”.That’s why the neighbor was itchy too. He’s her escape.

Not sure if the "Bandaid on a bullet wound" idiom is intentional (probably), but it certainly is well done. I can see the allusions to depression, self-harm, body dysmorphia, and anxiety.
I felt like it did have have something to do with depression or anxiety but also that she was just in an emotionless relationship and her "itch" is that nagging feeling of her inner feelings wanting out but doesn't know the correct course of action on how to relieve the feeling......regardless Alter NEVER fails to be amazing and I loved every second of it
I think you're reading too much into it. Maybe not everything with mental health HAS to be about depression or anxiety. Some people slip entirely off the deep end, or have explosive psychotic breakdowns and murder their loved ones, or cut off their own limbs or any number of deranged, terrifying things. Things like cutting your husband up with a buzzsaw because you've snapped after years of being patronised and barked at by your partner in this dingy, cramped little dump on a street in nowheresville...

I feel like she new her husband was cheating, and this is how it played out because she wouldn't confront him. The old sayings of " He had ants in his pants" and "He had an itch he needed to scratch" played their part in this film as well. I thought it was brilliant!
Charles Wolf I have a ton of DVDs I use for my car for my kids, and I have DVDs so I can watch my shows on my laptop while my kids watch theirs on tv.. DVDs are still around, &+ hopefully will always be around! 👏🏼 Now if they said “or get a VHS of it.” then I’d say who has those anymore lol 👏🏼😅😄😁
Not all horror films need jump scares, most just need elements that make you unsettled and keep you in the edge of your seat leaving you wanting more. Films that use too many jump scares seem to lack other important elements in a good film. This channel portrays what a good horror film should be like, bravo 👏
Couldn't agree more! We're big fans of Ingmar Bergman and he made the scariest movies of all time with nothing but a passing thought and a moment held in a doorway.
I feel like one of the ways this could be interpreted, is that she was suffering from OCD. Anybody on the outside has no idea how truly severe obsessive thoughts can get, which is why they say “just leave it alone” or “there’s nothing wrong with you”. However, one with OCD cannot merely ignore these thoughts, which is why they must complete certain compulsions - no matter how strange said compulsions might seem to the outside world (which could also be why she was isolating herself at home, so nobody could see and judge the things she was doing).
And I love the thing about short films, that they don't have the budget to show you the process. The result is that our mind spins and our imagination does the rest, which is more than any hollywood effects can beat.
As soon as I saw the name of the video, I immediately thought of the expression "to scratch an itch", and I guess that's open to interpretation. This woman wasn't satisfied with her life, she seemed depressed and frustrated, it's literally like an itch you cannot scratch, a kind of internal struggle you can't quite put your finger on. The acting was great as usual!
This reminded me of a friend who thought she had bugs crawling in my hair. She ended shaving her head and would a spray bleach "to get rid of the bugs". It was so sad and scary at the same time. Turns out she was doing a done of meth and I guess going crazy. So sad. I ended moving and lost contact with her.
My fabulous nephew is suffering from OCD, his amazing mother said it is like an itch you can't relieve. A brain itch. Completely perfect description of what OCD IS!

I have anxiety and OCD which make me itch and itch all the time. I have no rashes or dermatitis of any type, no eczema, but I just have to scratch and scratch and it really is a horrible feeling. Being itchy without a physical source. 😫 People are always saying "stop scratching so much, you're fine" but if your subconscious can't relax then there isn't much you can do.
What can be more terrifying than a young woman with a clear psychiatric disorder, with a husband and a doctor so stupidly negligent as not to notice ...
This reminds me of how doctors ignore people, especially women, until it is too late. I ended up going septic because doctors didn't diagnose me properly. They didn't listen. I almost died.
That’s all I could think about while watching this. Last summer I got horrific eczema that covered my arms, hands, and neck, and the itch was at times, absolutely unbearable, and scratching it just made it a million time worse. I feel your pain 😅
This happens more than People realize. Nowadays, Doctor's and Specialists won't give their time to really find the root cause and also really explain to the Person suffering. Especially in the Midwest. A Doctor will look at Patient's chart seeing that previous Doctor wrote "Delusional?", so your already judged prior to Doctor seeing you, with no studies. It's all about the money. Why should Doctor study to find out why Person is suffering when they could see multiple other Patients to fill up their Bank account. If Doctor's/Specialist's don't know a (Quick Fix), Patient is passed around until their broke. Majority It's stress, or with all the poisons in fast food/commercial food in boxes that last edible all year long. Majority It's scabbies. Yes!, a Person's immune system being low, they can be the only one in household that has it. In Midwest, Scabbies are always diagnosed as something other and Person suffers physically and emotionally by their Spouse's/Family telling them they don't have anything, you need rest. ..
As someone who has had skin issues AND anxiety my whole life, this is a perfect portrayal of it. Also, the moment where you use a fork to scratch yourself and it´s better than sex.

Literally blocked her calls while she slipped from highly confused and panicked right down into murderous psychopath, possessed by her own demons. He could have stopped this.

Well, here's my "saying what i saw" theory since all the ones i read were thinking way too abstract and complicated IMO. I think she was predisposed to bipolar disorder or disaffective disorder and broke down mentally as a result of an unhealthy (maybe abusive) relationship where she felt controlled. A prisoner with no agency smack bang in the middle of a "perfect" life. Analysing the opening conversation, the man comes into the kitchen and tells Addy "I told my mom you would pick up my stuff after work" to which she doesn't respond. He then waits, but when a response is still not received he aggressively barks "ADDY." So first thing to take away: he's telling her the stuff about picking up his belongings for the first time, here. Which means he made the decision for her beforehand, and it was merely a matter of letting her know what she would be doing, as opposed to asking if she could. Coupled with his immediate escalation after a "3rd strike" with the replies indicates that there is generally an expectation in the relationship that she _will_ speak when spoken to or there will be consequences. Already this paints a bleak image of their relationship. One where she feels like a piece of property to a man she likely is falling out of touch with, over time. Bad relationships cause stress. Stress can cause hives, so when she started itching it was entirely likely she was telling the truth about everything, but it is clear Enzo is only interested in this as far as it relates to attending dinner with his mother or his ability to go to work. He minimises her concerns and tells her not to worry about it like a parent would a child. She's already on the edge, breaking out in sores from this kind of cold, uninterested treatment, so she goes to a doctor. Now, hives are a funny thing because they can make quite a big mark on you, but unless the doctor thinks to check your histamine levels then there's a good chance it'll look like you're perfectly healthy. Because this isn't a typical manifestation of hives due to allergy, the doctor probably assumed it was no big deal, which is something they kind of have to do in their profession and its normally not a problem, but by now Addy is far from being in a normal state, and her last/best hope of being validated just told her that its basically all in her head. Addy snaps in the face of being unable to reconcile the hell she's been feeling for days, with the bored tone of the doctor, giving her the answers he gives to everyone. What she's experiencing is so real its all she can think about, but everyone else tells her it isnt. Having no one to turn to that she can trust. Or even anyone she thinks will listen, the hives worsen and now she's standing in front of the mirror, itching on every square inch of her skin. She calls Enzo and asks him to come home as she is scared and wants support. Enzo accosts her for interrupting "his" life for something that he is sure will be trivial (because she's such a paranoid fool), but he begins to head home, anyway, figuring she'll only annoy him more if he doesn't. [This is another example of the undertone of their relationship. He believes she ought to feel guilty for disrupting him because in his mind, he is the key player in their lives so if he is doing something, its automatically more important than what she's doing, which highlights again how he views her as more of a pet or caretaker] In a trance, she cuts a huge wound in her flesh. Coming to again, she's reached her limit of panic and confusion. She's cutting herself to bits and she _just can't stop scratching_ and it keeps spreading and getting worse. Scared and at the end of her tether, she dials Enzo - no answer. She doesn't even know he decided to come home and is around the corner. She maybe even assumes he's put his phone on silent and forgotten about her. 5 more calls go through - nothing. This is it. Its up to her to get herself through. But this is where I suspect she has her first full blown manic episode, characterised by a couple of things but most notably the drastic shift in behaviour. Where before she was timid, aloof, jumpy and always REacting(very anxious, depressive characteristics), now she is very much a polar opposite- confident/certain: "I gave it to you, Enzo. I gave it to them." Determined and driven to a goal and making actions toward it (grabbing the saw, physically touching him to get his attention), hyper-focused (all she can think about is the itch and getting rid of it) and in charge. She is no longer REacting... just ACTing. She clearly has a plan in mind and she is doing it right now. The logistics of it dont matter because in this state, she is confident she will work it all out. This all strikes me as an example of the dichotomy between manic and depressive episodes. When youre up, you can do anything. Take on the world. When youre down, you can get very down and feel hopeless and lost. Sometimes people have this happen in a cyclical nature, fairly predictably, and sometimes people can just sort of be on the verge of it, and it just takes the wrong type of trauma to set it off and it can happen at any age. So for Addy... her support structures have eroded around her, maybe only in the last few weeks... or maybe it was the last few years? She probably doesn't even remember, now. All she knows is that staying in this place is making her worse. Staying in her _skin_ is making it worse. Its spreading, and she has to get rid of it. I think one of two things happened after we no longer see the two: 1) she kills Enzo then kills herself, remaining in the manic state the entire time and turning on herself in an ultimately fatal way in an attempt to get rid of the itch; or 2) she kills Enzo and then comes to some time later, likely highly confused and drenched in blood only some of it hers. She's either within sight of Enzo or not, and if she isn't she would presumably come upon him very shortly, and either way would have to piece together what she's done and from there, it's anyone's guess. I honestly don't know what happens when you traumatise someone so much they go murderously insane and then snap them out of it just to traumatise them again. Either way her outlook is incredibly bleak from there. Moral of the story is: there is no moral. This is just the sort of thing that can and has happened before, so i guess take it as a reminder that the world is (not can be, is) a dangerous and scary place, and just because you don't see why someone is so worried, don't think that means their concerns aren't real or serious. Also don't keep your angle grinders out where anyone can grab them if you're gonna treat your gf like shit her whole life. What's sad about this is when she says "I love you Enzo" it kinda suggests to me that the whole time, part of what made this all so harrowing for her was how much she loved him. She probably wanted nothing more than that happy relationship with the man she loved, but because she didn't speak out to the right people, and no one took the time to see how she was feeling, she ended up going to a place she could never come back from. Its sad and terrifying because it could happen to anyone and you saw how much time there was (vaguely) between those frantic 6 calls and her turning up with soulless dead eyes and a power tool. It doesn't take long at all... Anyway if you made it this far, thanks for entertaining my little theory. Let me know what you think I got right or wrong, and finally don't forget this one was all just make believe, so go take a short break to shake off some of the heavy and bring yourself back to your reality - that should stop the itch. 😉
I... find it frustrating that so often people are like "gosh how long did it take you to write this!?" in this twittery day and age. "TL;DR" says people who spend HOURS reading hundreds of comments instead of just one book. Social aspects I suppose, but it comes across as so shallow to me. Anyway I sadly agree with your analysis, I suffer from chronic depression and dissociative identity disorder due to twenty years of Crohn's and other autoimmune disease issues. I've only known one person who was bipolar, and knew two manic depressives, and studied a lot of ... well, all of it I guess, looking for answers and help when doctors didn't seem to care. I don't think Enzo was being deliberately abusive, but he certainly took everything about Addy for granted, likely a sign of how close they once were. I've seen married life change very suddenly after several years in couples, and honestly the so called "seven year itch" was the first thing I thought of when just seeing the title. So there could be some intended parallels there too, and it ties in nicely with your description. Addy NEEDED attention and to feel wanted, Enzo needed life to go smoothly and according to plan, and for the first few years of their marriage they both managed to do that. Monotony in relationships can lead to isolation even when spending time with someone constantly, (role-expectation, work and chores, just daily living and surviving evolves within a marriage differently than it does as say with children growing up with their parents despite the obvious enormous changes there too over time) and Addy had to withdrawal inside to find agency, to find herself or a core, since he wasn't providing it to her as them being a couple. She was just "there," to him, and expected to be, not maliciously on his part but definitely self-absorbed. And when she DID finally start to cry out, she couldn't do so because she seems like she felt it might harm their relationship or make her seem weak or whatever, so it internalized like you said and manifested physically as psychosomatic hives. Rather, stress induced hives. It was very real, but didn't have a physical cause until she started abusing her own body to try to rip out the pain. From there it's as you said, her isolation spiraled quickly alongside her mental deterioration, and when she finally snapped she felt she was saving everybody from what she'd been going through. She saw it in everybody, everybody was itching, bugs were scritching EVERYWHERE, and she saw it as her fault. (She thinks) : Of course it was, the doctor said it, Enzo said she needed to just stop thinking about it and it'd go away but since she couldn't it didn't so that was her fault too, and now everyone was infected and it was her fault, her fault, her fault, her fault... It's a terrible thing to lose your sanity, whether temporarily or permanently, it's just the most terrible thing. Illness can be fought, even with placebo. But the placebo is from the mind, and a great deal of the will to live must come from the mind, and if you're extremely social or have tied your being so tightly to one person and then feel that relationship slipping... it's so hard. Life is so hard. Hopefully we don't have to go it alone, and even if you're just a random youtube commentor or reader, I'd like you to know that I'm thinking about you and I wish you well. I loved this! One thing I think was brilliant was they really left it up to you, the viewer, to decide for yourself if what is happening to her is some sort of crazy sci-fi type bug invasion scenario, or if it's a metaphor for her troubled life! (I personally am going with the metaphor ) if that were the case, I'd say the "itch" is her becoming aware that she is miserable in her current life. Her husband is dismissive and an ass. She seems frustrated with her life and that it's not going anywhere. She starts "itching" to get away! But as she starts losing her grasp on reality, she begins self-mutilation (cutting, burning, pulling out her hair) Nothing she does gets rid of her itch, so she does the only thing left. FANTASTIC! The actress who played Addy put forth an award-worthy performance! One that, so fraught with pain and sadness, that it COULD NOT have been easy to give! I applaud her for the performance, and the director for helping her shine. And of course, I would never miss applauding ALTER! Without you, my life would be sorely missing something....😎✌
Kathy! What a wonderful and thoughtful interpretation of the film! We definitely agree part of the fun is leaving it in the audiences hands and leaving their minds to make leaps and bounds. When horror becomes personal to the audience that's when things get really... itchy. And I couldn't agree more about Chelsea Jordan (the actress who played Addy). Her performance is incredible and she put herself through some strong emotional turmoil to produce a performance that is at once human and unsettling. Thank you for watching!

Honestly ya'll I saw this as a metaphor for OCD. Compulsive itching, scratching, and picking is a big thing for ppl with it. So I kinda saw it as her going crazy due to intrusive thoughts, the thoughts were of harming others like her SO. And then when the guy showed less than ideal signs of love she kinda snapped and went through with the intrusive thoughts. That's just how I saw it tho cause I have OCD, so obviously that's gonna be my first interpretation.
Alters short Horrors are way better than any Horror Movies from Hollywood... Some are more Horror than others but still these short films are so amazing
I really loved this, especially the sound design, editing, directing, and everything that was bloody (the blood was super convincing/realistic). The only thing I disliked was the casting for the lead character. Don't get me wrong, the actress seems really talented, and did a great performance, but for a short film about an insatiable itch, the actor/actress really needs to sell the audience on just how maddeningly uncomfortable they are, and a crucial part of that is facial expressions. This actress just wasn't facially expressive enough to sell me on their character and make me really feel what that character is going through.
Chronic itch is a common symptom of delusional state of o parasitophobia and I have only seen one case in 25 years as a trauma nurse I would not wish it upon my worst enemy the patient was verbally telling me if I could see the insects moving under his skin and had to be sedated due to self harm due to scratching done with nails screws a wire brush a circular hair brush but it was contected to another mental diagnosis he was so embarrassed all I could do was comfort him and tell him my own story after the episode had dissipated as someone with OCD due to being a survivor of child abuse I am always cautious with human contact as I feel as if I am going to make people sick or contaminate them it is very overwhelming when ur hurting depressed grieving and need human touch a hug but can not as u feel u may be contaminated and cause them ill health to explain that u are pushing them away because ur not ungrateful a brat a B BUT its u not them u feel dirty I feel for anyone like myself who has no one now who understands them I am so deeply sorry 💛 all we can do is be heard tell out stories our life and hopefully one day find understanding one day and stop being misunderstood as sharing our traumas with lives is not a poor me comment but a way to connect. Stay strong because each one of ur comments has helped me get out of my bed after my chemo treatment after a week.💛
The irony about using the color yellow is that it's usually intended as a cheerful, positive color, but here, it's almost overwhelming. It's also interesting that there's a book reading 'obey' at the beginning (I got "They Live" vibes from that).
Obviously, this is a metaphor for "the seven year itch" and you can tell by the way she's watching her neighbor work on his house. The "itch" is driving her mad and she feels like everyone around her can sense it. In the end, the only way she can scratch it is to kill that little ant that's getting in the way of her sweet, sweet relief.

Addy WTF is that! That killed it. It would of been more realistic if he said. Addy what are you doing with a skill saw! He sounded bad. His the men in the house so we expect the skill saw to be his because she doesn’t look like she knows construction but yet she owns one because apparently he doesn’t know what a skill saw is. And why TF does ADDY own a skill saw? If she has a skill saw she definitely has a garage full of construction equipment but yet her hands are all soft her arms aren’t built to use heavy construction equipment.UNREAL!!!

Patients coming in to our clinic complaining of bugs. It's amazing how fast it changes from an isolation-type visit to a mental health visit just by them describing the bugs being IN their skin vs. ON it. You go in with an iso gown and come out consulting mental health services.

My interpretation :
Her "itch" wasn't really a physical itch. It was a metaphor to anxiety & depression. She started feeling anxious & depressed. One day she had a rush of anxious feelings and needed someone to calm her so she called her husband home. But he ended up saying " you called me home for this" but said that she'll be fine. So the next shower scene/ losing hair scene was her sudden rush of anxiety again but this time didn't wanna tell the husband because she knew he wouldn't care enough and hush it down. The doctor scene probably was her therapist whom she wasn't talking about the "itch" but about her anxiety. Slowly her anxiety got more and severe.

It all started when she noticed her neighbor outside in the beginning. It’s like she’s shedding her skin. Getting rid of the old her and getting a new body. Like a metaphor for her relationship and how she’s ready to leave or “jump out of her skin”.That’s why the neighbor was itchy too. He’s her escape.

I think you're reading too much into it. Maybe not everything with mental health HAS to be about depression or anxiety. Some people slip entirely off the deep end, or have explosive psychotic breakdowns and murder their loved ones, or cut off their own limbs or any number of deranged, terrifying things.
Things like cutting your husband up with a buzzsaw because you've snapped after years of being patronised and barked at by your partner in this dingy, cramped little dump on a street in nowheresville...

Not all horror films need jump scares, most just need elements that make you unsettled and keep you in the edge of your seat leaving you wanting more. I feel like one of the ways this could be interpreted, is that she was suffering from OCD. Anybody on the outside has no idea how truly severe obsessive thoughts can get, which is why they say “just leave it alone” or “there’s nothing wrong with you”. However, one with OCD cannot merely ignore these thoughts, which is why they must complete certain compulsions - no matter how strange said compulsions might seem to the outside world (which could also be why she was isolating herself at home, so nobody could see and judge the things she was doing).

As soon as I saw the name of the video, I immediately thought of the expression "to scratch an itch", and I guess that's open to interpretation. This woman wasn't satisfied with her life, she seemed depressed and frustrated, it's literally like an itch you cannot scratch, a kind of internal struggle you can't quite put your finger on. The acting was great as usual!

This reminded me of a friend who thought she had bugs crawling in my hair. She ended shaving her head and would a spray bleach "to get rid of the bugs". It was so sad and scary at the same time. Turns out she was doing a done of meth and I guess going crazy. So sad. I ended moving and lost contact with her.

I have anxiety and OCD which make me itch and itch all the time. I have no rashes or dermatitis of any type, no eczema, but I just have to scratch and scratch and it really is a horrible feeling. Being itchy without a physical source. 😫 People are always saying "stop scratching so much, you're fine" but if your subconscious can't relax then there isn't much you can do.

This reminds me of how doctors ignore people, especially women, until it is too late. I ended up going septic because doctors didn't diagnose me properly. They didn't listen. I almost died.

That’s all I could think about while watching this. Last summer I got horrific eczema that covered my arms, hands, and neck, and the itch was at times, absolutely unbearable, and scratching it just made it a million time worse. I feel your pain 😅
This happens more than People realize. Nowadays, Doctor's and Specialists won't give their time to really find the root cause and also really explain to the Person suffering. Especially in the Midwest. A Doctor will look at Patient's chart seeing that previous Doctor wrote "Delusional?", so your already judged prior to Doctor seeing you, with no studies. It's all about the money. Why should Doctor study to find out why Person is suffering when they could see multiple other Patients to fill up their Bank account. If Doctor's/Specialist's don't know a (Quick Fix), Patient is passed around until their broke.
Majority It's stress, or with all the poisons in fast food/commercial food in boxes that last edible all year long. Majority It's scabbies. Yes!, a Person's immune system being low, they can be the only one in household that has it. In Midwest, Scabbies are always diagnosed as something other and Person suffers physically and emotionally by their Spouse's/Family telling them they don't have anything, you need rest. ..

Psychogenic itch can be related to anxiety, ocd or depression without any underlying dermatological cause. Some people do have such conditions, and often misunderstood or lack support. Fiction does reflect reality.

Oh anxiety. It manifests in the most horrible ways sometimes.
Well, here's my "saying what i saw" theory since all the ones i read were thinking way too abstract and complicated IMO.
I think she was predisposed to bipolar disorder or disaffective disorder and broke down mentally as a result of an unhealthy (maybe abusive) relationship where she felt controlled. A prisoner with no agency smack bang in the middle of a "perfect" life.
Analysing the opening conversation, the man comes into the kitchen and tells Addy "I told my mom you would pick up my stuff after work" to which she doesn't respond. He then waits, but when a response is still not received he aggressively barks "ADDY."
So first thing to take away: he's telling her the stuff about picking up his belongings for the first time, here. Which means he made the decision for her beforehand, and it was merely a matter of letting her know what she would be doing, as opposed to asking if she could. Coupled with his immediate escalation after a "3rd strike" with the replies indicates that there is generally an expectation in the relationship that she _will_ speak when spoken to or there will be consequences.
Already this paints a bleak image of their relationship. One where she feels like a piece of property to a man she likely is falling out of touch with, over time.
Bad relationships cause stress. Stress can cause hives, so when she started itching it was entirely likely she was telling the truth about everything, but it is clear Enzo is only interested in this as far as it relates to attending dinner with his mother or his ability to go to work. He minimises her concerns and tells her not to worry about it like a parent would a child. She's already on the edge, breaking out in sores from this kind of cold, uninterested treatment, so she goes to a doctor.
Now, hives are a funny thing because they can make quite a big mark on you, but unless the doctor thinks to check your histamine levels then there's a good chance it'll look like you're perfectly healthy. Because this isn't a typical manifestation of hives due to allergy, the doctor probably assumed it was no big deal, which is something they kind of have to do in their profession and its normally not a problem, but by now Addy is far from being in a normal state, and her last/best hope of being validated just told her that its basically all in her head.
Addy snaps in the face of being unable to reconcile the hell she's been feeling for days, with the bored tone of the doctor, giving her the answers he gives to everyone. What she's experiencing is so real its all she can think about, but everyone else tells her it isnt.
Having no one to turn to that she can trust. Or even anyone she thinks will listen, the hives worsen and now she's standing in front of the mirror, itching on every square inch of her skin. She calls Enzo and asks him to come home as she is scared and wants support. Enzo accosts her for interrupting "his" life for something that he is sure will be trivial (because she's such a paranoid fool), but he begins to head home, anyway, figuring she'll only annoy him more if he doesn't. [This is another example of the undertone of their relationship. He believes she ought to feel guilty for disrupting him because in his mind, he is the key player in their lives so if he is doing something, its automatically more important than what she's doing, which highlights again how he views her as more of a pet or caretaker]
In a trance, she cuts a huge wound in her flesh. Coming to again, she's reached her limit of panic and confusion. She's cutting herself to bits and she _just can't stop scratching_ and it keeps spreading and getting worse.
Scared and at the end of her tether, she dials Enzo - no answer. She doesn't even know he decided to come home and is around the corner. She maybe even assumes he's put his phone on silent and forgotten about her. 5 more calls go through - nothing. This is it. Its up to her to get herself through.
But this is where I suspect she has her first full blown manic episode, characterised by a couple of things but most notably the drastic shift in behaviour. Where before she was timid, aloof, jumpy and always REacting(very anxious, depressive characteristics), now she is very much a polar opposite- confident/certain:
"I gave it to you, Enzo. I gave it to them."
Determined and driven to a goal and making actions toward it (grabbing the saw, physically touching him to get his attention), hyper-focused (all she can think about is the itch and getting rid of it) and in charge. She is no longer REacting... just ACTing. She clearly has a plan in mind and she is doing it right now. The logistics of it dont matter because in this state, she is confident she will work it all out.
This all strikes me as an example of the dichotomy between manic and depressive episodes. When youre up, you can do anything. Take on the world. When youre down, you can get very down and feel hopeless and lost. Sometimes people have this happen in a cyclical nature, fairly predictably, and sometimes people can just sort of be on the verge of it, and it just takes the wrong type of trauma to set it off and it can happen at any age.
So for Addy... her support structures have eroded around her, maybe only in the last few weeks... or maybe it was the last few years? She probably doesn't even remember, now. All she knows is that staying in this place is making her worse. Staying in her _skin_ is making it worse. Its spreading, and she has to get rid of it.
I think one of two things happened after we no longer see the two:
1) she kills Enzo then kills herself, remaining in the manic state the entire time and turning on herself in an ultimately fatal way in an attempt to get rid of the itch; or
2) she kills Enzo and then comes to some time later, likely highly confused and drenched in blood only some of it hers. She's either within sight of Enzo or not, and if she isn't she would presumably come upon him very shortly, and either way would have to piece together what she's done and from there, it's anyone's guess. I honestly don't know what happens when you traumatise someone so much they go murderously insane and then snap them out of it just to traumatise them again. Either way her outlook is incredibly bleak from there.
Moral of the story is: there is no moral. This is just the sort of thing that can and has happened before, so i guess take it as a reminder that the world is (not can be, is) a dangerous and scary place, and just because you don't see why someone is so worried, don't think that means their concerns aren't real or serious.
Also don't keep your angle grinders out where anyone can grab them if you're gonna treat your gf like shit her whole life.
What's sad about this is when she says "I love you Enzo" it kinda suggests to me that the whole time, part of what made this all so harrowing for her was how much she loved him. She probably wanted nothing more than that happy relationship with the man she loved, but because she didn't speak out to the right people, and no one took the time to see how she was feeling, she ended up going to a place she could never come back from. Its sad and terrifying because it could happen to anyone and you saw how much time there was (vaguely) between those frantic 6 calls and her turning up with soulless dead eyes and a power tool. It doesn't take long at all...
Anyway if you made it this far, thanks for entertaining my little theory. Let me know what you think I got right or wrong, and finally don't forget this one was all just make believe, so go take a short break to shake off some of the heavy and bring yourself back to your reality - that should stop the itch. 😉

I... find it frustrating that so often people are like "gosh how long did it take you to write this!?" in this twittery day and age. "TL;DR" says people who spend HOURS reading hundreds of comments instead of just one book. Social aspects I suppose, but it comes across as so shallow to me.
Anyway I sadly agree with your analysis, I suffer from chronic depression and dissociative identity disorder due to twenty years of Crohn's and other autoimmune disease issues. I've only known one person who was bipolar, and knew two manic depressives, and studied a lot of ... well, all of it I guess, looking for answers and help when doctors didn't seem to care. I don't think Enzo was being deliberately abusive, but he certainly took everything about Addy for granted, likely a sign of how close they once were. I've seen married life change very suddenly after several years in couples, and honestly the so called "seven year itch" was the first thing I thought of when just seeing the title. So there could be some intended parallels there too, and it ties in nicely with your description. Addy NEEDED attention and to feel wanted, Enzo needed life to go smoothly and according to plan, and for the first few years of their marriage they both managed to do that.
Monotony in relationships can lead to isolation even when spending time with someone constantly, (role-expectation, work and chores, just daily living and surviving evolves within a marriage differently than it does as say with children growing up with their parents despite the obvious enormous changes there too over time) and Addy had to withdrawal inside to find agency, to find herself or a core, since he wasn't providing it to her as them being a couple. She was just "there," to him, and expected to be, not maliciously on his part but definitely self-absorbed. And when she DID finally start to cry out, she couldn't do so because she seems like she felt it might harm their relationship or make her seem weak or whatever, so it internalized like you said and manifested physically as psychosomatic hives. Rather, stress induced hives. It was very real, but didn't have a physical cause until she started abusing her own body to try to rip out the pain.
From there it's as you said, her isolation spiraled quickly alongside her mental deterioration, and when she finally snapped she felt she was saving everybody from what she'd been going through. She saw it in everybody, everybody was itching, bugs were scritching EVERYWHERE, and she saw it as her fault. (She thinks) : Of course it was, the doctor said it, Enzo said she needed to just stop thinking about it and it'd go away but since she couldn't it didn't so that was her fault too, and now everyone was infected and it was her fault, her fault, her fault, her fault...
It's a terrible thing to lose your sanity, whether temporarily or permanently, it's just the most terrible thing. Illness can be fought, even with placebo. But the placebo is from the mind, and a great deal of the will to live must come from the mind, and if you're extremely social or have tied your being so tightly to one person and then feel that relationship slipping... it's so hard. Life is so hard. Hopefully we don't have to go it alone, and even if you're just a random youtube commentor or reader, I'd like you to know that I'm thinking about you and I wish you well.

I loved this! One thing I think was brilliant was they really left it up to you, the viewer, to decide for yourself if what is happening to her is some sort of crazy sci-fi type bug invasion scenario, or if it's a metaphor for her troubled life! (I personally am going with the metaphor ) if that were the case, I'd say the "itch" is her becoming aware that she is miserable in her current life. Her husband is dismissive and an ass. She seems frustrated with her life and that it's not going anywhere. She starts "itching" to get away! But as she starts losing her grasp on reality, she begins self-mutilation (cutting, burning, pulling out her hair) Nothing she does gets rid of her itch, so she does the only thing left.
FANTASTIC! The actress who played Addy put forth an award-worthy performance! One that, so fraught with pain and sadness, that it COULD NOT have been easy to give! I applaud her for the performance, and the director for helping her shine. And of course, I would never miss applauding ALTER! Without you, my life would be sorely missing something....😎✌
Kathy! What a wonderful and thoughtful interpretation of the film! We definitely agree part of the fun is leaving it in the audiences hands and leaving their minds to make leaps and bounds. When horror becomes personal to the audience that's when things get really... itchy.
And I couldn't agree more about Chelsea Jordan (the actress who played Addy). Her performance is incredible and she put herself through some strong emotional turmoil to produce a performance that is at once human and unsettling.

Honestly ya'll I saw this as a metaphor for OCD. Compulsive itching, scratching, and picking is a big thing for ppl with it. So I kinda saw it as her going crazy due to intrusive thoughts, the thoughts were of harming others like her SO. And then when the guy showed less than ideal signs of love she kinda snapped and went through with the intrusive thoughts. That's just how I saw it tho cause I have OCD, so obviously that's gonna be my first interpretation.
Not entirely sure what was going on but it made me itch like hell! Brilliantly acted, beautifully shot and a great portrayal of anxiety.

Alters short Horrors are way better than any Horror Movies from Hollywood... Some are more Horror than others but still these short films are so amazing
I really loved this, especially the sound design, editing, directing, and everything that was bloody (the blood was super convincing/realistic). The only thing I disliked was the casting for the lead character. Don't get me wrong, the actress seems really talented, and did a great performance, but for a short film about an insatiable itch, the actor/actress really needs to sell the audience on just how maddeningly uncomfortable they are, and a crucial part of that is facial expressions. This actress just wasn't facially expressive enough to sell me on their character and make me really feel what that character is going through.
Chronic itch is a common symptom of delusional state of o parasitophobia and I have only seen one case in 25 years as a trauma nurse I would not wish it upon my worst enemy the patient was verbally telling me if I could see the insects moving under his skin and had to be sedated due to self harm due to scratching done with nails screws a wire brush a circular hair brush but it was contected to another mental diagnosis he was so embarrassed all I could do was comfort him and tell him my own story after the episode had dissipated as someone with OCD due to being a survivor of child abuse I am always cautious with human contact as I feel as if I am going to make people sick or contaminate them it is very overwhelming when ur hurting depressed grieving and need human touch a hug but can not as u feel u may be contaminated and cause them ill health to explain that u are pushing them away because ur not ungrateful a brat a B BUT its u not them u feel dirty I feel for anyone like myself who has no one now who understands them I am so deeply sorry 💛 all we can do is be heard tell out stories our life and hopefully one day find understanding one day and stop being misunderstood as sharing our traumas with lives is not a poor me comment but a way to connect. Stay strong because each one of ur comments has helped me get out of my bed after my chemo treatment after a week.💛

The irony about using the color yellow is that it's usually intended as a cheerful, positive color, but here, it's almost overwhelming. It's also interesting that there's a book reading 'obey' at the beginning (I got "They Live" vibes from that).
Yellow is a colour associated with insanity, for example, the short story “The Yellow Wallpaper.”

Obviously, this is a metaphor for "the seven year itch" and you can tell by the way she's watching her neighbor work on his house. The "itch" is driving her mad and she feels like everyone around her can sense it. In the end, the only way she can scratch it is to kill that little ant that's getting in the way of her sweet, sweet relief.
Was this about being unhappy in a relationship or something.

His the men in the house so we expect the skill saw to be his because she doesn’t look like she knows construction but yet she owns one because apparently he doesn’t know what a skill saw is. And why TF does ADDY own a skill saw? If she has a skill saw she definitely has a garage full of construction equipment but yet her hands are all soft her arms aren’t built to use heavy construction equipment.UNREAL!!!

Patients coming in to our clinic complaining of bugs. It's amazing how fast it changes from an isolation-type visit to a mental health visit just by them describing the bugs being IN their skin vs. ON it. You go in with an iso gown and come out consulting mental health services.
