One of my dad's uncles fought against the Nazis in Hungary, and told me that there were Hungarian women who would defiantly sing this song, as he and the other soldiers would march through the country.

There was still Rákóczi's war of independence, and communists after WW I, Hungary lost those too. At least the Bocskai uprising succeeded... and Hungary had a border war with Slovakia and managed to win that too!
