Good review. Just got this guy. After transforming the Deformation space figures and XTB Kup, this reminded me that life doesn't have to be so difficult. Really enjoying this figure.

I had planned to use Apache for bot mode and alt-Saltus as one of the alt modes. But that robot mode is so good I might have to rethink things. And yes I agree that this Springer is possibly one of the best figures MMC has ever made. Great thorough review.
I am debating the same questions
The air intake on springs chest is black instead of grey on the alternate version. That ALONE makes him superior IMO.
Good vid. I purchased the original Saltus and from what I can tell regarding color variances (along with what you mentioned):
1. That small exhaust in both alt modes being gray
2. The sword / rotar blades having a more chrome-like finish
Also, the trident was a nod to the season three episode titled 'Nightmare Planet' where he and the Predacon, Razorclaw, were abducted. In one scene, Springer rode atop RC while carrying that trident.
Saltus kills Apache in terms of gimmicks. My favorite is the "we're outnumbered" arm canons. I also feel Saltus wins in the articulation area...oh, and obviously the price too. Apache, however, does get the win of the two for overall feel and presentation though.
Enjoyed the review. I have the original and it was one of my favorite things ever right out of the box. I got the Apache reissue two weeks ago and while Apache does some things better, I think Saltus is hands down a better figure and a better representation of Springer.
Not to be that guy, but because it may increase your enjoyment of this figure even more, there are a few things you missed. First, the toes are on sliders which helps his stability a bit. You still have to contend with all the joints in his foot and then not being ratcheted, but it helps.
Also, there is additional better storage for his weapons in his alt modes. You can peg his gun into his leg in car mode without the adapters. There’s a square port in the leg that matches the square peg. In helicopter mode, the rifle sandwiches in between his legs. Fills in a bit of hollowness back there too.
Just a bit of additional trivia...the different head and the trident aren’t from IDW, but from a S3 episode that was animated by Studio Ox. I think it’s Call of the Primitives. There’s an alternate transformation for the yellow and green shoulder bits to further duplicate that look. They basically go straight up against the back of his shoulders with the yellow parts on top and facing forward.

The Trident is g1 - from the episode Nightmare Planet when Daniel’s dreams are used as weapons by the Quintessons.
I decided on this one (the original color) because even when the car mode is completely inaccurate, it looks more like a car than the original design haha. I also liked the spear from Planet Nightmare (I like how he did team-up with Razorclaw)

It's a good figure, I just think the black joints breaking up the arms look really kinda off-putting, and the small boosters are a bit silly. Wonder why they used the black plastic for the arms.
Looks like this new coloring and other slight differences were made to look more similar to fanstoys apache imo. MMC did a really good job with this but I’ll stay with Apache, which to me has that more premium feel and heft. Though this seems to have greater pose ability.
I was actually surprised how good this feels, not the typical MMC product. Heavy and robust

I noticed the feet slide out,is this for robot mode? I also love how clean this figure looks.
I wasn’t sure about the smiling head at first,but Springer seems the type to smile while he’s busting Deceptichops.

I do like the look of this figure, but I have Apache and will be checking out the XTB version when it is finally released. Saltus does have my least favorite car mode, but that is the least important mode for Springer, in my opinion. It is one of those that does not look good in the animation either. The correct colors in the right spots are great! I also like you fit a figure in the cockpit. It just seems Apache takes it a bit further with overall package. I just hate the ft prices anymore. I think Apache mightbe the last reissue I get. Mmc does enough in a lot of other characters we missed in the ft debacle price wise. Great review!

I chose this over the Fanstoys because I didn’t like the cape, arm wheels, and lack of ab crunch with the Fanstoys.

Good review. Between Saltus (MMC), Apache (Fans Toys) and Virtus (X-Transbots), which figure do you think is more cartoon accurated? O better in general?
I need to have Virtus in hand first, between FT and MMC I would say FT has the more accurate face but MMC is more accurate overall

XTB definitely nailed the accuracy best, but at the cost of several other aspects. Stay tuned for the VS

Love the quality of this figure but in my opinion no mode, including bot, was nailed with MMC Springer. Springer and Cliffjumper are my fav characters so I am very prejudice on how they are presented. 🤗
