One of my buddies has been driving around Lake Michigan in a very similar tug boat sand box, since 2010... Since he had it registered, (and it also had navigation lights, a portable radio, horn, oars, etc) the Coast Guard did an inspection, and gave him a vessel approval sticker to take it out on the waterways. He has been enjoying many years out on the lake with it... Although yours is way faster because he only has a trolling motor on it.. Great video. And wishing you many great years out on the water with your cool little boat.
Awesome! I bought one of these for my little niece who adored it. Thoughts of making it seaworthy crossed my mind but never pursued them. Ten years later I came across it while visiting my sister. Sun damage had warped it and had several large holes from where some animals had chewed through. I offered to take it to the dump but my niece insisted on keeping it. She privately told me it was her favorite of all time! I enjoyed your build and the hilarious outings on the water!
When I was seven years old I tried so hard to convince my friend to turn his sandbox into an actual boat that we could take on the pond. His dad was a kill joy though so it didn't happen lol

@@OffroadcircusJust please do not quit, you’re close, i promise you. You have such a good understanding of content, it’s really rare. Put all your time and money into youtube.
That’s fair, these were sold pretty recently and already they’re getting hard to find. Reminds me that time to live is now & the past only gets further away every day
One time me and a buddy put a 9.5hp outboard on a paddle boat and took it out on the lake. It worked pretty good. People loved it. Bad idea to take it out on the 4th of July because the water was pretty rough from all the other boats. It eventually took on water between the two halves and capsized. We had to hail a family on their pontoon and get it pulled to an access. Good times.
This is merely the start of something awesome. A small trolling motor (30# thrust) moves my 18' fiberglass (with plenty of wood and metal) sailboat along at a nice clip with one adult and two kids on board, so it could probably make this thing fly. I suspect the trolling motor is a lot lighter so you'll be taking a lot of weight off the stern. Build a waterproof box for the battery and position it (attached to the boat) about where you're sitting on that crate. That additional weight in the center (and as low as you can get it) will help with the stability. IF you want to put a bigger motor on it (and maybe if you want to stick with the same motor) put those engineering skills to work and find a way to get all that weight off the transom and closer to the middle of the boat - or get some floatation under the stern. Also build into the boat more floatation (as in a large waterproof box or two) - in addition to their primary purpose (to prevent the boat from sinking) it can also take up space inside your boat - which can be a good thing when your boat is filling with water. If they're along each side, then the water will pool along the centerline. If you have an automatic bilge pump to bail out the water that would be even better. If the tops can open (with waterproof lids of course), that's also dry storage. Anything you do to build up the sides (the gunnel) to make it more difficult for water to swamp the boat would also be good. Even if it's something like pool noodles - every little bit helps. It could also help you take on less water if you have floatation (like fenders) attached to the sides. Put them above the waterline so there's no drag when you're flying straight and level, but will prevent the boat from heeling over as far. It's nice to have a pfd in the boat - but a lot of people have died in the water with a pfd in the boat. Stop abusing the boat - it's too valuable to be launching out the back of a van onto pavement. Have you tried calling that number yet?
I build boats for a living. Almost 30 year's. I have seen many times our formers blow the floor line out of the hull. Lol..most fill holes get a 30 second shot for part a and b.

Well done man! Cops were nice, but they got two things wrong, if you're wearing your pfd (think jet ski) you don't need oars or a rope or anything, other than a whistle. Just a sound signaling device although a rope and bailer are good ideas. For those living is the US of freedom, depending on what state you're in you'd need to get your sand box registered. In Canada you don't need a boat license (number on the hull) if you're under 10hp.
That’s a good point, usually the jet ski guys have nothing on them and they seem to do fine. From a safety standpoint if I had an issue with this boat people would stop by with or without a whistle lol
