In this chapter, C.S. Lewis explains the essence of Christianity as "putting on Christ" or becoming a "son of God" by embodying Christ in every part of life. He clarifies that this process isn't just one task among many but the central goal of Christianity-there is no other purpose. Lewis contrasts this with ordinary morality, where people try to be good by controlling their natural desires, hoping to still have something left for themselves. He points out that such an approach often leads either to frustration or to becoming a begrudging, self-righteous person.
Christ’s way is radically different, as He demands not just small sacrifices but the entire self. Lewis explains that this path, though difficult, is also easier than struggling to maintain personal happiness while trying to be good. It's a total transformation of the self, not a patchwork fix. Lewis uses analogies to describe how Christians must allow Christ to work within them, comparing it to a seed needing to be planted and grown, or an egg that must hatch to become a bird.
He concludes by emphasizing that this transformation is the entire purpose of the Church and the universe. Everything-missions, services, and even the Bible-exists to help people become "little Christs." Lewis also speculates that this transformation of humans might lead to the renewal of all creation. As humans are drawn into Christ, other parts of nature may also come right, and the world will be restored.
Surrender is so easy at some points and so difficult at others
