I've done the mod on my bike and I feel the bike is much smoother. It had kind of a lean burn run-on and jerk felt mostly when canyon riding and slowing down and then hitting the throttle. It also has taken away a lot of the compression braking which isn't a bad thing but either way that is easy to adapt to. Over all for me the mod makes the bike run better and is definitely more enjoyable to ride.
There will be folks that think the stock bike has perfect fueling. Then there’s a whole lot more who know all about the abrupt On/Off Throttle and extreme engine braking. Both of which are caused by Closed Throttle Fuel Cut. Modern bikes should not behave like that. It makes riding the bike more difficult. One has to compensate for this behavior like you did by modulating the clutch at lower speed. Or if you don’t completely close the throttle to slow down then you’re fine. The Clutch Switch Bypass disables Closed Throttle Fuel Cut. Which in turn makes the fueling much smoother. There’s no need to modulate the clutch at slower speeds. It also eliminates the extreme engine braking. For those who don’t notice nor care or are so afraid of starting the bike in gear, don’t do this mod. For others, we love this mod.
@@Geshmaalnot only are they learning poor clutch control but also poor throttle control. There is no need to slam the throttle closed when coming to a stop.
I found the on/off behaviour and strong engine braking annoying so the mod is a big win for me and it's staying on. I never start the bike without pulling in the clutch anyway so not really worried on the safety aspect of it.
I am 6' 7 and weigh 265 pounds. I have 2" risers 1" lowering pegs and raised windshield. Clutch bypass is the best mod ever of all times. It's a whole new bike.
I did the mod on my 22' Adventure and definitely made a difference. Smoother engine braking for sure. Much smoother with the mod and made it smooth out like my old CBR 954 felt when fully letting off the throttle. For those questioning the "tinkering" that's what most cyclists do with any bike they own. Buy a cheap plug and play or make one and it literally takes less than 30 seconds for you to be able to decide for yourself. As for starting the bike, imo you should never crank one without the clutch in anyways.
The reason I'm considering doing this "mod" is because when I'm decelerating from the interstate and completely release the throttle then try to give it just a little throttle to get me to the stop sign or lights it gets all herkey-jerkey on me. When I'm riding really aggressive I don't notice this at all...but 90% of the time I ride like an old man and in town or coming off the interstate when I need just I teeny-tiny bit of fuel, then the bike wants to go all out on me.
New 2023 KLR 650 owner here, for now, I am going to wait on this mod. I kind of like the engine braking and if I let off the throttle more gradually, it doesn’t seem too bad but I have only been on paved roads so far. Thank you for the on and off road demonstrations without annoying music. Thank you for posting.
I put 1100 miles on my '23 KLR before I implemented this mod so that I would have a real sense of whether it did anything for me or not - and I've been riding for 30+ years for those who want to claim 'tinkeritis' or 'novice'. I saw noticeable improvement in performance in terms of the bike not overreacting to a closed throttle, the herky-jerky BS that is induced by the bike thinking it knows better than me. I also think it shifts more smoothly after the mod, which I don't believe Ben noted one way or the other. You do you, boo - it cost you nothing to try it and you can easily go back to stock if you don't think there's any change or you don't like the change. Ride safe!
Just did mine today. So much better for me. Way smoother on decel, no more decel pop with my after market pipe and can start my bike in gear. Any bike I’ve had where I can’t start in gear I’ve ditched this safety feature which is dangerous in my view if your bike stalls for whatever reason in traffic and you gotta find neutral to start it back up. This mod was better for on road application than offroad. Offroad benefit would be starting in gear on the trail if you stalled and get going faster. I ride my KTM 500 more than my KLR so maybe I’m just used to riding faster than fiddling with the sluggish KLR.
@@SwankyCatProductions yeah instead of dicking around to find neutral just drop it in first and start it up with the clutch engaged. If you stall your bike on some crazy trail and you’re all off balance it’s gonna suck trying to find neutral to start it back up.
Closed throttle fuel cut is an emissions thing. Many US models for all the manufacturers do this. My GSXS 1000 had the same issue. A tune is your friend.
I almost didn’t do the modification after watching this video. But I did anyway. And I’m really glad I did. It just runs much better, and the excessive engine breaking is eliminated.
You make riding with stock performance look easy, like most of your videos. But, I am NOT an advanced rider and feathering the throttle to overcome the stock engine braking was challenging and annoying. This mod made the difference between selling or keeping the bike, and I love the smoother throttle response now. Thanks for showing us how to make the modification.
Haha I think it's a little more than that but I think this is definitely a problem for those who are a little more picky than most. Nothing wrong with that though.
My 2023 surges so bad it almost bucks me out of the seat at low rpm cruising, so yes its a real problem! If you have a gen 3 klr and don't have this problem I envy you and would give my left nut to know how your bike is different from mine.
I bought a 2023 KLR in July and yes, I notice the surging but I am a new rider as well so without other motorcycle experience……🤷🏻♂️ I have only been on paved roads so far though, maybe it’s much different on trails and dirt roads.
Fun video to watch and ride along on a beautiful evening. I quickly get used to each motorcycle's fueling characteristics and, like you, barely even notice the Closed Throttle Fuel Cut on my 2022 KLR. Although I very rarely start my bike when it's in gear, I believe, like my friend Murphy, that "if anything can go wrong, it will." Safety first. I don't need this mod. Thanks for testing it for all viewers to evaluate.
Making me enjoy my carb more and more. There's also a sub set of people who have to have every possible modification to whatever they ride or drive no matter what
I’ll be running the mod until someone can fix the fuel mapping through tuning, I have been riding this through the abrupt fuel cut by adjusting my throttle cables and modulating the throttle more smoothly. But drivability wise I prefer the mod off road due to being bounced around, and on highway. In town I like the hard engine braking. Once my warranty is up I will install a switch to toggle between the 2 positions though. There is also a very fine range with the tps on these bikes and some are out of speed causing the fuel cut to come in earlier and harsher. My bike had the throttle body replaced due to this, and my dealer tech worked closely with Kawasaki on this issue.
Somehow just learned about this mod today. I ride a 23 and have learned to make the most out of the engine braking, but slow streets can be a real pain with the bike wanting to lurch or dive. I'm going to put this on a switch.
If you put after market levers on then typically you can only start the bike in Neutral - which can be a pain. This mod would then allow you to start the bike in any gear with the clutch lever pulled in (to stop the bike from jerking forward).
If you're doing it for that reason I completely agree. I like having all the safety stuff in place for when I loan my bikes to friends but it would be a good idea to have stuff on the bike to bypass stuff like that on the trail.
I disabled the kickstand and clutch switch on my 2019 ktm 690 enduro r. This was done because i figured i would break the switches and be stranded. The side effect of disabling the clutch switch is that that also disabled the quickshifter. I like that because i preload the shifter before shifting and the quickshifter would cause a premsture shift. I have experienced no negative effects from disabling the switches.
Huh interesting, I think that would bother me too. I wouldn't say a preload my lever but I definitely hold my foot too it and it wouldn't take much to bump it.
I haven't done the mod yet, but I'm finding the G3 dramatically more choppy on the throttle than my G1 or any bike i've ridden recently. It can be really unpleasant when standing and negotiating grades. Def going to try this this weekend.
I need to find some sort of fix for my 2023 KLR650 surging! Mine is approaching "un-ridable" at low rpm cruising, almost bucking me out of the seat. You obviously did not have the same problem.
One of the few complaints I've had is after a downhill stretch and easing back on the throttle mine had a hesitation and pop out the exhaust. Cured with this mod . Also easier to control speed during low speed maneuvers.
There is one more thing this code does when you are on a take off it will slightly rev the motor for 1st gear take off from a dead stop with out going any where just barley burn the clutch like not even 1/8 out the rpm will rise around 250-450 rpms i have the rpm monitor i got when i did the therm bob upgrade so i can see it rise. but you can feel it and hear it too. i think this was for hill assist.
I did this mod because I have the Warp9 levers and they wouldn't allow the switch to disengage properly. After doing this, its much easier for me to start the bike on trails since I have short legs and a lifted bike so now I don't have to keep swapping legs to put it back in neutral. I definitely noticed the smoother throttle, especially at slower speeds where you don't want a jerky throttle.
Jake The Garden Snake hooked his clutch wires up to the pass (high beam flash) switch on his FZ-07 when he swapped his levers. Pretty neat idea, just pull the clutch and pass switch and fire it back up.
Desperate for a fix for my 2023 klr 650 surging. The bike is approaching "un-rideable". At low rpm cruising the bike almost bucks me out of the seat. Why is Kawasaki not coming to the rescue? Maybe I should have bought a Honda?🏍
Well... for me anyway if I let go of my handlebars to adjust my gloves or something and having the bike lurch forward was quite annoying. also what is the point? it acts like a jake brake on your KLR. I think the bike rides a whole lot smoother with the mod in place.
Maybe it’s an emissions thing? I bypassed mine on my Gen1, only because the switch died as I was leaving for a big group ride and wouldn’t let the bike run at all while in gear. I kludged a bypass to make the ride, and, well, never touched it again… 🤷♂️ But no weird throttle behavior on the Gen1. I’m just lazy. 🤣
I'm 50/50 about it. I did it because I didn't like the RPM assist with partial clutch activation at low, crawling speed. I actually took my bike back to the dealer soon after I got it to see if there was an issue. The first thing I noticed was the immediate drop of RPM when pulling in the clutch when downshifting with the bypass. The lack of engine braking is noticeable. I like the non-modded engine braking, so I may take the mod off for a while just to see which I prefer.
Yeah that threw me off too, kind of an odd thing. The mod does make the engine breaking feel a little more normal but with out it I just feel like I'm on my ATV and don't really think anything of it lol.
@@SwankyCatProductions How did the video come out today Jul 2 but these two comments were from 1 and 2 days ago? Also.....I wouldn't do the mod do to warranty issues.
It’s a super cheap mod, easily reversible as Swanky shows. Try it. If you don’t like it, remove it. It’s not some big investment like a tuner. It bypasses something that some people have noticed and don’t like.
I like to shake the feeling back into my throttle hand during my commute, its an hour one way to work on the interstate. The only thing i hate about this bike is if you even let go of the throttle for a second it drops you 10mph with engine braking. So my hand is stuck holding 3/4 throttle with little to no wiggle room for relaxing. I get to work and my hand is dead. I tried clutch in coasting for a hand shake and this thing is so heavy it just bogs right down (not as fast as engine brake). I didn’t want to mod it but im gonna try.
I am not sure if this mod is for me. I am having a problem with the gen 3 not idling down quick enough when going down a steep incline. Its like its pushing me down the hill instead of the engine slowing me down. did not have this problem on gen 1 or gen 2.
I just did the mod today but haven't been out. What I hope to resolve is the odd surge when slowing into a turn on dirt. I downshift from 3rd to 2nd, throttle closed and the bike kind'a jumps forward. It's a bit unnerving when my intent is to slow into turn and throttle out.
I actually tried it again recently since the engine breaking mixed with my pipe was getting annoying. Now I like that aspect, but the lowered RPMs when crawling through the woods has me feeling like I need to ride the clutch to keep the motor turning lol.
I have a 2002 Gen One...... I was tempted to trade it in on a Gen Three.....After hearing about the idiosyncrocies of the G3's.....I am happier than ever with my clunky old G1...... She's old, and ugly...but she likes me.
11:40..."that does feel a lot more normal, I'm not gonna lie about that" is it just me, or were you trying to convince yourself the entire time that this mod is a bad idea?
Haha fair point. I was a bit wishy-washy on how much it effected my riding. I definitely think the positive effects are worth an ECU flash (when available) I just don't think disabling a safety feature is ever a good idea.
Never drove a bike that knows when the clutch is pulled. I have, perhaps a few times, tried to start my xj1100 standing next to it and it lurched itself forward off the kick stand and it fell on me. Would have been nice to have there.
I did this mod in my gen 2 because the sensor went bad, I did it with the paper clip and electrical tape, what fuse are you using there so I can change mine to that?
First thing I do on any new (to me) bike is find the side stand switch and eliminate it. Had too many try and strand me over the years by taking a shit at the worst time. This seems similar with the added fuckery of messing with your throttle, that would have to go away if I owned one.
The plus side is that it richens the fueling throughout the rpm range. So, when you remove your snorkel and add exhaust leaning out the bike, you richen it back up with the bypass
@@SwankyCatProductions It was my understanding that it's all throughout the rev range I feel like it's noticeable if you've got the bike in neutral with the clutch out and then you pull the clutch in you can hear the change in RP m's
@@jacbosmitt Please post the data supporting your statement about fueling across the rpm range. FWIW That rise in RPM is the idle speeds control motor raising the idle to assist in starting off.
I've did this mod when I first got my gen 3. On a few occasions, while off the throttle at low speeds and once just as I was about to take off from a stop light, the bike dies. It seems like the idle for a split second goes to low and it stalls, I simply hit the button and she fires right back up and I'm off. I may rehook the clutch switch to see if that may be causing the slight issue and also to verify that It's a viable mod. Keep rockin the KLR!
Seems like viral Facebook silliness to me. Started by someone that didn’t learn proper clutch and throttle control and spread to people easily convinced to look for this “issue”.
For people that have ridden their whole life like everyday as a child the bike becomes an extension of the body. Anything that artificially interferes with that connection can be annoying. As the creator of this video says u will naturally learn to live with it as i did almost immediately but that natural connection with the bike should be the default not the other way around.
I think this would've been a 3D printed mount that I needed to heavily modify to make work. I'm running the 3D cycle parts windshield risers with the built in mount and a buzz kill now. Here's the video on it. th-cam.com/video/KugBNb3-PCc/w-d-xo.html
You have to decide if you're a airhead or not. So Here's something to think about. If you BROKE YOUR CLUTCH CABLE, you cant start the bike. because of the cutout switch. In cars they put clutch cutouts on the pedal for the same dimwits who start their in gear. But if you trash the clutch with the cutout bypassed you can start the car and get home in first gear. The solution is to put an on off switch so if the clutch cable breaks to can flip a switch and get the bike started in gear and get home. You only need the clutch to get moving. can shift without it between gears . And will the bike push start in first gear. or is that messed up too. computers in cars and bikes were never a good thing. its all the EPA trying to elimate simple gas vehicles and carburators . that wont stop running .
Yeeeeaah, you would still be able to start the bike if the clutch cable snapped. You'd have to pull the non functioning lever in, but it would still go just like it did when I pulled out of the garage.
Thanks for the video. I tried the bypass and found no significant deficit, difference or benefit with the mod that effective clutch and throttle control and coordination didn't provide for a smooth comfortable ride.
I am a firm believer to NOT modify the safety switches on the KLR650 or my Versys X300. All the modifications and accessories added my X300 (see my channel) I've not hacked any of the bike's wiring. No hacking of any part of the of the bike. But that is just me. I've seen some horror stories on the X300 owners, mostly in far away countries, that just look like a bad idea.
I don't think it's worth doing. Not that much of a difference. Especially when I am going in the mountains I like having the engine braking. The street it was ok but the issue people talk about doesn't bother me.
The KLR is the king of "if it's not broke, don't fix it" they continued that with the 3rd generation. There's a reason to have that clutch switch. You pull that switch, now you're giving the potential of debris and crap getting where it's not suppose to be. I think most of the people getting work up over this, are novice
I think it would definitely benefit novice riders but I think the picky experts are the ones who it really bothers. The "issues" it fixes are real, just not a huge deal to everyone.
In the industry we call this type of modification tinkeritis. Tinkeritis is simply defined as a rider that assumes they are smarter than the OEM engineers, or a rider that invents solutions to problems that don’t exist, and cannot leave anything alone. Most timkeritis sufferers then post the rubbish in an attempt to validate their wasted time. Tinkeritis sufferers also try to make others go along with them. They often use terms like, they say, they all have this issue and on the forums everybody has this issue….. The best one though is …The manufacturer knows about the issue and they are covering it up….As a professional tech I’ve seen and heard it all, and it gets worse daily. I have the same bike and it is great, I’m not a new rider either. Like many things in life that are new one must learn to use/adapt to the platform. Thank you for the content and the laughter.
Haha yeah it seemed like people were really getting into a frenzy about this online. Then one guy said he didn't see the big deal and he got ripped on for not knowing how to ride a motorcycle which seemed extremely backwards to me since he was saying he didn't needed to modify his bike to ride it... Haha.
Dude ur out of shape lol jkjk seriously tho all that huffin and puffin takes alot energy that could be used elsewhere . Breathe brotha, breathe. Practice makes perfect. It’s a great thing to practice and will improve ur riding techniques overall a lot more than you would think
This is absolutely the best mod. Completely takes the annoying surging and bumping out of throttle response.

Very true!
What's wrong with just using a bit of clutch at low speed? It's how we're taught to control the bike in the UK.

Haha nice. Yeah the gen1 and 2 didn't use it for anything other than a safety switch.
@@jason.couture7177 if you have to take it into the dealer for warranty, you put it back to stock before. That is standard with anything nowadays
It’s a super cheap mod, easily reversible as Swanky shows. Try it. If you don’t like it, remove it. It’s not some big investment like a tuner. It bypasses something that some people have noticed and don’t like.
@@jason.couture7177 Patreon video, early access.
I'm with ya. I've gotten used to riding how the bike likes. But, imma gonna try it to see for engine braking which can be excessive.
It definitely feels more natural with it modded. Looking forward to getting that charged with an ECU flash when it's available.
Get rid of that shit ,you don't need it.More stuff to cause problems.Learn how to ride without all the safety garbage and you will be a better rider.
With the clutch safety switch “unmodded” can you pop the clutch and start it (aka bump start) if the battery is dead?
Has Kawa came out with an ECU reflash? or anything beside the dynojet or djjet kit?
Idling through rough rocky terrain mine kicked like an angry mule and stalled without the mod. I had to put a foot down hard. Maybe I will try the mod
I am not sure if this mod is for me. I am having a problem with the gen 3 not idling down quick enough when going down a steep incline. Its like its pushing me down the hill instead of the engine slowing me down. did not have this problem on gen 1 or gen 2.
I’m kind of confused because I have a brand new 2023 and I can start in gear? If stalled at a light before and fired it right up
I just did the mod today but haven't been out. What I hope to resolve is the odd surge when slowing into a turn on dirt. I downshift from 3rd to 2nd, throttle closed and the bike kind'a jumps forward. It's a bit unnerving when my intent is to slow into turn and throttle out.
Yeah it definitely is odd haha.
varia el consumo de gasolina al final ? tienes que apretar el embrague para dar arranque?
I tried the mod and really missed the good engine braking. I don’t find the stock fuel mapping to be choppy at all.
I actually tried it again recently since the engine breaking mixed with my pipe was getting annoying. Now I like that aspect, but the lowered RPMs when crawling through the woods has me feeling like I need to ride the clutch to keep the motor turning lol.
what gps and mount do you use? ever make a vid on it?
Great content Mr. Cat!
Thanks Blackdog!
I have a 2002 Gen One...... I was tempted to trade it in on a Gen Three.....After hearing about the idiosyncrocies of the G3's.....I am happier than ever with my clunky old G1...... She's old, and ugly...but she likes me.
Haha, first thing I do to all my bikes, that, and kickstand switch...bye bye haha!
They won't leave you stranded that way!
is that why I cant take off in 2nd? My zx636 can take off in 2nd easy.
11:40..."that does feel a lot more normal, I'm not gonna lie about that"
is it just me, or were you trying to convince yourself the entire time that this mod is a bad idea?
Haha fair point. I was a bit wishy-washy on how much it effected my riding. I definitely think the positive effects are worth an ECU flash (when available) I just don't think disabling a safety feature is ever a good idea.
Like try some single track
. Bang …bang… “not a great start” lol had me dieing
🤣
Never drove a bike that knows when the clutch is pulled. I have, perhaps a few times, tried to start my xj1100 standing next to it and it lurched itself forward off the kick stand and it fell on me. Would have been nice to have there.
Really??? It never had one? Or it was bypassed?
@@SwankyCatProductions It's a 1982. It did have a factory digital display, though.
I did this mod in my gen 2 because the sensor went bad, I did it with the paper clip and electrical tape, what fuse are you using there so I can change mine to that?
5 amp mini if recall correctly but I don't think it matters to much.
First thing I do on any new (to me) bike is find the side stand switch and eliminate it. Had too many try and strand me over the years by taking a shit at the worst time. This seems similar with the added fuckery of messing with your throttle, that would have to go away if I owned one.
Im old, what is this new teem to me. Single track?
Is it trail riding?
Single track = one tire path
Two track = two parallel tire paths (from a truck)
Is this bypass needed if you upgrade to an after market clutch lever?
You'd still need to do the same thing to bypass it yeah.
@@SwankyCatProductions is this mod worth it to upgrade to a lighter clutch? Do you recommend any for gen 3 klr t
The plus side is that it richens the fueling throughout the rpm range. So, when you remove your snorkel and add exhaust leaning out the bike, you richen it back up with the bypass
I was under the impression it was only changing the throttle closed fuel map?
@@SwankyCatProductions It was my understanding that it's all throughout the rev range I feel like it's noticeable if you've got the bike in neutral with the clutch out and then you pull the clutch in you can hear the change in RP m's
@@jacbosmitt Please post the data supporting your statement about fueling across the rpm range. FWIW That rise in RPM is the idle speeds control motor raising the idle to assist in starting off.
I think it acts like a big dirt bike, which doesn't bother me because I like dirt bikes. 🤠
Will this mod work on the tenere as well?
Any news from 2wheeldynoworks on a ecu flash?
Nope, nothing yet.
Great video good Info keep it up,,👍
Thanks!
Thanks for that did watch a video about it 👍 😀 can't see it doing anything 😀 👍
Cheers 🍻
Cheers!
Think I'll just stick with my 09 KLR
Haha
Seems like viral Facebook silliness to me. Started by someone that didn’t learn proper clutch and throttle control and spread to people easily convinced to look for this “issue”.
For people that have ridden their whole life like everyday as a child the bike becomes an extension of the body. Anything that artificially interferes with that connection can be annoying. As the creator of this video says u will naturally learn to live with it as i did almost immediately but that natural connection with the bike should be the default not the other way around.
What ph mount is that?
I think this would've been a 3D printed mount that I needed to heavily modify to make work. I'm running the 3D cycle parts windshield risers with the built in mount and a buzz kill now. Here's the video on it.
th-cam.com/video/KugBNb3-PCc/w-d-xo.html
Swanky Kat. Does just putting a silencer on/ opening up the exhaust help with the rapid decel? Or no? Appreciate all your vids on the gen 3 KLR!
I don't really think I noticed anything when I put my Lexx on but it might have made a slight difference I just didn't notice.
Hi Deer; hello Sweety!
Lol
Looks like a good place for a switch so you can choose to mod or not to mod…,
Haha. Yeah that definitely would be nice!
Too many mods to make up for a lack of proper skills. But if you would rather mod than learn riding skills. go for it!!
Thanks for the video. I tried the bypass and found no significant deficit, difference or benefit with the mod that effective clutch and throttle control and coordination didn't provide for a smooth comfortable ride.
Exactly! I only really notice it when I get lazy.
Right, once your use to it I don't think it's a big deal. Can even be helpful in some situations.
The "issues" it fixes are real, just not a huge deal to everyone.
to each their own but yall are absolutely high if you dont think this mod works great
In the industry we call this type of modification tinkeritis.
Empirical evidence is lacking on this…it’s all “feels”.
on a nother side note i cant believe no one has done a ecm update yet with moto tune.
I usually work with 2WDW, they sponsored the flash on my Tenere. But they're still waiting on something from Kawasaki for the KLR.
