I showed this to my Grand dad 7 months ago. Never seen that man shed a tear until then. He passed away last month at the age of 101. He's the reason I joined the Navy when I was 18. I miss him greatly.
As I listen to this I think of my father. He served 30 years in the US Navy serving from 1943 to 1973 aboard numerous ships. He is still with us at the age of 97. I love you Dad!
I was the captain of a sailing ship for five years, the Barque Lioness. When she went to the yard some years ago i knew she'd be the last square-rigger i'd command. Im 78 years old. I hummed this tune when i walked away from her for the last time. Sad then. Sad now.
I think this is one of the best tributes for Stan Roger’s, navy’s actively carrying on his legacy not only in his music, but also in his memory but in memoriam of all those sailors and ships who came before. I truly believe Stan would be filled with joy knowing how this song has impacted people all around the world.
@@YourGodStalin it is, but Stan Rogers is who made it mainstream and in my opinion, perfected it with his rendition of the song. So while it isn't technically his song, I still think that this does pay homage to him, as well as the others who came before
Thank you for your service and dedication to our country. Special thanks to all of you for sharing your talents. Great harmony, great job! BRAVO ZULU (CV 63 USS Kitty Hawk)
My father in law just passed on. He was a 26 year Master Chief. He treated me like the son he never had, and was a huge mentor for me in my navy career. Fair winds snd follow seas Dave.
It broke my father’s heart having to retire from the Navy. He’d look out over the ocean at Sunset Cliffs in San Diego and I always imagined he was thinking back to his Navy days. This song captures what my old man may have been feeling. At least it’s the closest I could imagine.
I almost went Navy like my late grandfather when I served. Wish I had and would I had been a vocal musician with the opportunity to sing with such talented patriots! Sound is amazing! The timbre and melancholy feel really get one in the feels.
I once had a music instructor who said that the greatest musical instrument ever created was the human voice. Thank you for proving her right once again!
Leave her johnny leave her. Respect to every man and woman who has to actually do this you have my 100 percent undivided respect thank you for your service.
@@jonathannathan1754Come on now. That's a non-reason. If it is, then why did the same song by The Longest Johns, posted not too long before this one, get 10M?
Damn! I sent this to my son while he was in Navy Boot Camp; now he is in nuclear propulsion training. I can't wait until his years are up and I can sing him this song. It's not just those in uniform who sacrifice; this is pay-back for me being so eager to join the Army all those years ago.
listen to this reminds of my 15x great grandfather which was a vice admiral for great britain back in 1800's i wish i met him tho atleast i can remember him by playing this song TYSM youtube😮💨
his name was admiral gell british admiral in early 1800s of the '' elizabethan age" he was in such a high ranking position he could have dinner with QE 1
The irony of this video is that this particular song describes how fed up the crew are with the conditions on board and life at sea and is traditionally most often sung by the deck crew of merchant ships or pirate vessels near the end of a voyage to give cheek to the higher-ups, with verses often improvised to include traits of the ranked crew members. It would never be sung on a naval ship due to the expectation that the crew would maintain respect for the chain of command at all times.
This is a wonderful evocative song and the singing is excellent...that said one of the images of warships is that of a WWII Nazi Kriegsmarine battle cruiser (Gneisenau/Scharnhorst) which I believe was not your intention as they are similar in some appearance to USN warships of that era. While the mystic of the sea appeals across nationalities I don't think you wanted to associate your wonderfful rendition of this shanty with the despicable history of the Nazi regime - especially as representatives of the USN. For your due consideration. Paul Seguna Lieutenant Commander RCN (Ret'd)
Wish basic had been in San Diego for me, but I guess it was a mixed blessing to be in Great Mistakes, Illinois in the middle of winter. Also wish I had chosen the Navy band instead of the Seabees, could have put my musical talent to good use.
😂good news is if you're looking for the chow hall, these guys clearly know exactly where it's at, and can tell you the menu from memory on the way there😂

This is beautiful

Makes me wonder who the last US. Navy sailor was that made his rate in sail?

This song is much older than Stan Rogers.

The harmonies, sweet jesus.
I'm U. S. Coast Guard retired and this gives me goosebumps. I served on three large Coast Guard cutters in my 29 year career. A wonderful rendition.

Why isn't this getting more views/publicity?
Because it’s sad.

Wonderful! 👏👏👏❤️❤️❤️
Awesome voices man. You can feel the emotions. Realy good. Thanks for your love in this song
Well done sailors!
Also: the battleship at 0:45 is a Bismarck Class battleship (the turrets and the flag on the bow give it away). Might wanna QC
That is Scharnhorst/Gneisenau, not Bismarck.
Never forget the ones who dies for us.
There's no white crosses to mark the Graves of those who died at sea.
O Allah please bestow your divine blessing to all the sailors across the globe🤲
I sing this to my Daughters when they go to sleep :)
Your daughters will probably become sailors if they grow up with sea shanties
I would like a quartet consisting of an Irishman, Scotsman, Aussie and a Kiwi singing this cuz their accents are different
This is the song you play after your service in the navy
Anchors Away, boys! Beautiful job. Well done.
Incredibly beautiful. Thank you. Salute from Belgium.
Outstanding job, gents, really fine singing.
Bravo Zulu, shipmates! There is still line handling aboard ships & boats.
This version sends chills down my spine.
My uncle was a part of the Navy I think of my uncle still every day

he too was commanded a wooden ship not sure which wood ship he commanded though
What was his name? Vice Admirals and their flagships were meticulously recorded in the Royal Navy.

Well sung all of you. Props to the bass, solid and smooth.
A beautiful tribute.
Oh… hooyah. Such a soothing arrangement.

beautiful voice
Fantastic
I’m not crying! Your crying!
Great barbershop version.
I'm pretty sure that 1st battleship shown in the video is either the Gneisenau or Scharnhorst. It definitely doesn't look like a US ship.
It’s for all sailors
Good job brother

Are sailors allowed to sing aboard their ships? Or does it cause a distraction even if they don't do it out loud?
We are allowed to sing. If we don't cause too much problems
If this arrangement is available for purchase I would be very interested!
you all look handsome in your sailor fad
Smooth harmony
Hooyah
I was in the Navy, served from 2013 - 2021 and I left her. That ship really was a rotten tub. Good riddance!
What ship you served on?
Privateer wlp 297 Dustin shuey us merchant Navy loyal to Blackbeard 🖤✊⚓☠️
