Oh, Thank you Mr. Caidic, after 35 years meron ulit nito. Ito yung team na nag umpisa na mga halos unknown ang players. Grabe ang transformation na ginawa ni late coach Ron Jacobs at late Danding Cojuangco. Unbeatable sa Asia. Sayang nga lang at di sila natuloy sa World Stage due to political events. And the rest is history.

I was at Stadium Negara in Kualar Lampur, Malaysia as a 18 year old watching this match in 1986. Amazing how this great Philippine team dethroned the mighty Chinese team. Great play by Jeff Moore and the rebounds and slams by Dennis Steel and amazing shooting by Allan, it was a treat to watch all of them. Was the best final I have seen at ABC.

This will be the best TH-cam channel for me. Pag may naka-break na siguro sa mga basketball records ni idol saka lang siguro yun ang next kong susubaybayan. This guy opened my senses in the game of basketball. Bago pa sila Jimmy Alapag, James Yap, Mark Caguio, Reggie Miller, Ray Allen, Klay Thompson, at Steph Curry. Siya na at siyanpa din ang pinakamahusay sa tres na hindi pa napapantayan man lang ng mga pangalang yan. Maski si Jawo, MJ, Kobe, at LBJ hi di nagawa ang mga nagawa niyang records.

The over all program from 1979-1986 it was a continuing process from RP Youth (U22) to the Mens Team. (Actually it can be said that it culminated in 1987 were remnants of the pool represented the country in the SEA Games)
Ron Jacobs employed a solid defense rotation concepts, role definitions and deliberate-disciplined motion offense system.
If one would look closely on the roster composition and talent pool of the SMC-NCC here are my takes.
GUARDS - Playmaker-Ballhandler with ability to pace the team and set tempo, with very reliable handles, consistent outside shot, considerable speed and toughness on defense. (Franz Pumaren, Dindo Pumaren, Pido Jarencio, Leo Austria, Hector Calma, Ronnie Magsanoc, Al Solis)
    SLASHING GUARDS -
Combo scorer on rim-transition attack, pick n roll, blowby moves with decent midrange & outside shooting, speed and handling, reliable one on one defense.
(Jojo Lastimosa, Elmer Reyes, Samboy Lim, Glen Capacio, Ricky Brown)
    SMALL FORWARDS
    - Reliable and Consistent Shooting Skills with ballhandling skills and decent speed and defense. (Allan Caidic, Naning Valenciano, Joel Banal, Jong Uichico, Alfie Almario)
    FORWARDS/CENTERS
    - Toughness on defense and rebounds, good passing and midrange skills, can finish strong to the basket, energy on defense and hustle plays.
(Jerry Codinera, Benjie Paras-RP Youth, Alvin Patrimonio-RP Youth, Yves Dignadice, Tonichi Yturri, Manny Victorino, Rey Cuenco).
    NATURALIZED PLAYERS
    - Disciplined and facilitates transfer of skills and knowledge, provides coverage for height and offensive options.
(Dennis Still -Centre, Jeff Moore- Forward and Chip Engeland- Guard/Forward)
In the 1990 Asian Games Roster of the PBA, 8/12 were Alumni of the SMC-NCC Program (Both Mens and RP Youth Program)
namely Hector Calma, Ronnie Magsanoc, Samboy Lim, Allan Caidic, Yves Dignadice, Rey Cuenco, Alvin Patrimonio, Benjie Paras. Ramon Fernandez member of the 1970s RP Team, Chito Loyzaga, Dante Gonzalgo and Zaldy Realubit completed the squad.

With due respect to all Filipinos, the 1985 Philippine team sponsored by San Miguel had 3 or 4 naturalized American players plus an American Coach with dual citizenship... Their first 5 always playing in the court almost continuously are 3 naturalized Americans (Steel, Moore, and Ingeland) and just 2 Filipinos (Caidic and Lim with alternate Calma, Pumaren, Dignadise, or Ituri)...
I guess, they can not really take FULL Credit for their back-to-back 1985 ABC & Jones Cup Championship Victories... compared to the 1973 ABC Champion which is all 12 Filipinos without naturalized Imports and a Filipino Coach... That was AMAZING, that I could really salute 100%!

great game indeed, if there werent any import/ naturalized players it would have been cherry on the icing.
naalala ko ito, a year later, natanielz & his co-alipores for the marcoses wont be seen for quite sometime.

1985 pa globalized na ang mindset natin even sa basketbol - 2 naturalized players, then foreign coach. We were really ahead that time. Very progressive pa tayo. Anyare satin?

This is the final game of the tournament but not in the manner of a usual “Finals” game that we are all accustomed to. This was based on a quotient system. Since Phils beat Korea, and Korea beat China in the championship rounds, China needs to beat Phils by at least 10 points to win. Had China won this final game by 9 points, Phils will still be the champions. Ron Jacobs knew the pressure was on China and said that China knows that they cannot beat Phils by 10 points.
